But its fiscal&nbsp;Q1 showed a loss of $35 million in FCF. This didn’t do anything to help BB stock. If fell from a near-term peak of $15.88 on June 3 (before the June 24 Q1 results) to $9.56 on Aug. 19. The stock could be near a trough now.</p>\n<p>I still believe that&nbsp;as I wrote on June 4, BB stock could be worth $20.91 per share, assuming its FCF turns positive this year. All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.</p>\n<p>For example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.</p>\n<p>That is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.</p>\n<p><b>Where This Leaves BlackBerry</b></p>\n<p>Last year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.</p>\n<p>If it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.</p>\n<p>For example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.</p>\n<p>However, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.</p>\n<p><b>What BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth</b></p>\n<p>If we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.</p>\n<p>For example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.</p>\n<p>And if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.</p>\n<p>Therefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).</p>\n<p><b>What to do With BB Stock</b></p>\n<p>Analysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by&nbsp;<i>Yahoo! Finance</i>) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.</p>\n<p>Another survey by&nbsp;<i>TipRanks.com</i>&nbsp;says that four analysts have an&nbsp;average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by&nbsp;<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;have an&nbsp;average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.</p>\n<p>So the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. But its fiscal Q1 showed a loss of $35 million in FCF. This didn’t do anything to help BB stock. If fell from a near-term peak of $15.88 on June 3 (before the June 24 Q1 results) to $9.56 on Aug. 19. The stock could be near a trough now.\nI still believe that as I wrote on June 4, BB stock could be worth $20.91 per share, assuming its FCF turns positive this year. All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.\nFor example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.\nThat is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.\nWhere This Leaves BlackBerry\nLast year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.\nIf it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.\nFor example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.\nHowever, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.\nWhat BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth\nIf we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.\nFor example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.\nAnd if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.\nTherefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).\nWhat to do With BB Stock\nAnalysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by Yahoo! Finance) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.\nAnother survey by TipRanks.com says that four analysts have an average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by Seeking Alpha have an average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.\nSo the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. That order asked the bank to offer restitution to customers and improve risk-and-compliance management practices.</p>\n<p>The newest penalty is a setback for Wells Fargo five years after the bank first became embroiled in scandal for creating perhaps millions of fake customer bank accounts. Chief Executive Charles Scharf has spent the last two years trying to make nice with regulators, but a long list of penalties remain in place. The bank indicated in recent regulatory filings that its overseers were losing patience.</p>\n<p>“Wells Fargo has not met the requirements of the OCC’s 2018 action against the bank. This is unacceptable,” said Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu in a statement.</p>\n<p>The regulatory rebuke specifically faults the bank for failing to develop a program for customers to avoid losing their homes, such as through loan modifications. That has caused errors that harmed borrowers, the OCC said. The penalty asks the bank to fix that program and improve its risk-management systems. That order asked the bank to offer restitution to customers and improve risk-and-compliance management practices.\nThe newest penalty is a setback for Wells Fargo five years after the bank first became embroiled in scandal for creating perhaps millions of fake customer bank accounts. Chief Executive Charles Scharf has spent the last two years trying to make nice with regulators, but a long list of penalties remain in place. The bank indicated in recent regulatory filings that its overseers were losing patience.\n“Wells Fargo has not met the requirements of the OCC’s 2018 action against the bank. That compares to shockingly large estimated increases in industrial sector profits of more than 570%, and energy industry profits, up 220%. Earnings for the financial and materials sectors are expected to be up more than 100% each.\nThose huge gains and expected earnings beats should be a positive for some cyclical stocks this quarter. Earnings season kicks off Tuesday with reports fromJPMorgan Chase,Goldman Sachs,andPepsiCo.\nThis earnings season will be the period where the tug of war that’s been a factor in the stock market, between cyclical and growth trades, is due to play out very clearly in the earnings numbers. Inflationary pressures, negative for tech stock performance, are expected to help boost cyclical earnings growth in the rebound, as companies face rising input costs but also up their prices.\n“I think what you’re going to see is a very unusual kind of contradiction between the data and the narrative,” said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at Credit Suisse. “What companies are going to say is they are facing shortages and rising input costs and other things which are constraints to their success. And then what you’re going to see is massive beats and the biggest portions coming from higher margins. They’re not going to try to reconcile it.”\nGolub expects companies to provide detail on rising costs and supply shortages but not as much information on how much they are raising prices or how broadly.\n“If you listen to what the CFOs are going to say, you’re going to think the earnings are terrible, but if you look at the results, they’re going to be magnificent,” he said.\nBut ultimately, it’s tech and growth that will prove to be the best performers profit-wise over the long haul. “Their own earnings revisions for themselves are still good. They’re not deteriorating. They’re solid. They’re not getting worse. They’re not accelerating in this ridiculous way. They’re on the same solid trajectory they’ve been on,” said Brian Rauscher, Fundstrat head of global portfolio strategy.\nRauscher expects the trend to revert back to tech as the better earnings performer in two quarters from now, when cyclical airline stocks or industrial stocks like Caterpillar will see earnings growth back in the single digits. “Tech will keep growing at 25%,” he said.\nHe says economic growth will have slowed to a more normalized and sustained pace. By then it will be more apparent whether inflation is temporary or not.\n“If they are unable to pass along price increases, it will hit the earnings,” he said.\nGolub points out that tech profits in last year’s second quarter actually increased by 3.3% from 2019, as cyclical earnings plunged 85% in the same period. The 2021 second quarter earnings growth estimate for tech is 34.2%, while some cyclical earnings will rebound by more than 570% just to get back to even with 2019.\n“It says one of these is a near term trade, and one of them is a long term trade,” said Golub. “Once the supply chain issues are gone, [cyclicals] are going to be unimpressive.”\nEven with the push pull of tech and growth versus cyclical trades, strategists say the earning season should be good for the stock market.\n“I think the numbers will be very good, and it’ll be supportive for markets,” said Rauscher. He said some investors may be concerned that a peak period of earnings this quarter will lead to a market decline but he doesn’t expect that to be the case.\n“Obviously, the numbers are going to be outsized because we have that weird comparison from last year. I think the important thing is going to be the return of guidance,” Rauscher said. Chief Executive Charles Scharf has spent the last two years trying to make nice with regulators, but a long list of penalties remain in place. The bank indicated in recent regulatory filings that its overseers were losing patience.</p>\n<p>“Wells Fargo has not met the requirements of the OCC’s 2018 action against the bank. This is unacceptable,” said Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu in a statement.</p>\n<p>The regulatory rebuke specifically faults the bank for failing to develop a program for customers to avoid losing their homes, such as through loan modifications. That has caused errors that harmed borrowers, the OCC said. The penalty asks the bank to fix that program and improve its risk-management systems.
