However, many investors have remained skeptical about Micron's claims that its business -- historically one that behaves like the ebbing and flowing tides -- is riding a new long-term growth trend driven by artificial intelligence and 5G mobile networks. After skyrocketing to all-time highs this past spring, Micron has been an underperforming chip stock and is now down about 3% so far in 2021.
\n
The most recent worry surrounds management's outlook that it will kick off its new fiscal year with a quarter-over-quarter sales decline. It could be an early indication the tide is ready to go out for Micron's business, or it might be a temporary pause tied to effects from a global chip shortage. Is this the best place to invest your money in the semiconductor industry right now?
\n
\n
\n
\n
The weirdest memory chip cycle \"boom\" ever
\n
Micron had only just begun to recover last year from a cyclical downturn in chip sales that was accentuated and worsened by the U.S.-China trade war. Then COVID-19 struck. In spite of another halt in sales, though, the pandemic set off a massive upgrade cycle in consumer electronics. Stuck at home, many households went shopping for devices -- both for personal and business use. As memory chips are a basic commodity in virtually every piece of electronic hardware out there, the surge in demand helped lift Micron out of the doldrums.
\n
But here's the current rub: After a rally in fiscal 2021 (revenue rebounded 29% from 2020 to $27.7 billion), management forecast a sequential decline in sales. Q4 2021 revenue was $8.27 billion, but Q1 fiscal 2022 is expected to be just $7.65 billion at the midpoint.
\n
Since Micron is a cyclical chip fab (that is to say, manufacturing) outfit, these quarter-to-quarter dips can be an early signal a more sustained downturn is brewing -- even though the revenue outlook for Q1 still implies a 33% year-over-year increase ($7.65 billion versus $5.77 billion in Q1 2020). But given the deep disruption to global supply chains right now brought on by the pandemic, there's plenty of worry Micron could be headed down from here and cut this current memory cycle boom short. Other components in the tech world are in tight supply, and without them, higher-order manufacturers (like laptop and smartphone makers) don't have an immediate need to purchase more memory.

\n
As a result, Micron hasn't been able to fully take advantage of the chip shortage that's been roiling the economy as of late. If memory chip inventories rise at these manufacturing partners and cause a fall in chip price, look out below.
\n
Focus on the long-term winners
\n
There's another way to look at the problem, though. According to CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, the chip shortage is extending demand (or making sales \"stronger for longer,\" in Mehrotra's words on the earnings call) since many end-user device orders are going unfulfilled. Plus, even as consumer demand wanes, enterprise demand is just starting to pick up steam again. New cloud-based services like AI have set off a new upgrade cycle for the data centers that power the software, and 5G network buildout is continuing apace.
\n
Pair those new secular growth end markets with the fact that the memory chip industry has consolidated to just a few players over the last decade, and Micron is in arguably better shape than it ever has been. If a new downturn is brewing, there's a better chance that profit margins will be far more durable than in the past as a supply glut can be more easily managed with fewer industry producers -- not to mention the higher margins that come with more advanced chips powering the cloud and 5G.
\n
To reinforce that point, Micron's gross profit margin on products sold in Q1 is expected to be almost in line with where it just was in Q4, in spite of the expected dip in total sequential output: about 46%, plus or minus 1%. In all, the company's top brass expects the bottom line to fare pretty well in the next year and support the expected $11 billion to $12 billion in capital expenditures (purchase of property and equipment) in 2022 compared to the just under $10 billion spent in 2021. There should be plenty of room to pay for the recently initiated dividend (currently yielding 0.6%) and the $6 billion left over on the current share repurchase plan (over 7% of Micron's current market cap).

\n
At 16 times trailing-12-month earnings per share (or 14 times on an adjusted earnings per share basis), Micron could be a great value in the semiconductor space right now -- but only if you believe trends like cloud, AI, and 5G will last at least through the next few years and gradually increase demand for memory circuitry. I don't think Micron is the best ultra-long bet on those secular trends, but with many chip stocks flying high this year, Micron might be a \"cheap\" alternative to add into the mix.
\n

\n

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is Micron Technology the Best Chip Stock to Buy Right Now?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nIs Micron Technology the Best Chip Stock to Buy Right Now?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-10-02 00:00 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) recently put the final wrap on its 2021 fiscal year (the 12 months ended Sept. 2, 2021), reporting a big rebound in revenue from 2020. I don't think Micron is the best ultra-long bet on those secular trends, but with many chip stocks flying high this year, Micron might be a \"cheap\" alternative to add into the mix.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"BOTB.UK":1,"MU":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1987,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":864891448,"gmtCreate":1633083668114,"gmtModify":1633083668543,"author":{"id":"3581998173257990","authorId":"3581998173257990","name":"kyawkh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6819d2405688957eac033bb43e588a5","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581998173257990","idStr":"3581998173257990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Singapore that would be among the first to be backed by a public stock exchange.

The technology giants may use Climate Impact X as they strive to meet “ambitious” targets to become net-zero Ride-hailing firm Grab Holdings Inc. has also expressed interest in the trading venue that’s set to be launched this year, she said.

Companies with net-zero or even net-negative ambitions are quickly realizing that “negotiating one-on-one with their small sustainability teams” to find the best projects “is completely unrealistic and is draining their manpower,” Cho said.

Microsoft and Google declined to comment, while Amazon.com Inc. didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Grab Support

Singapore-based Grab said the company supports carbon offset programs that reduce emissions and provide economic uplift to communities.

“Having greater transparency and assurance will help us achieve that promise to our consumers and key stakeholders,” a spokesperson said. “We look forward to more details when CIX is launched.”

Private companies are coming under increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint to support goals under the Paris Agreement, and are looking for ways to cancel greenhouse gas emissions that can’t immediately be slashed. Singapore last week announced a pilot project to encourage more companies to buy certificates for offsets, even as quality control remains a concern globally.

Climate experts have warned that validating cheap offsets that don’t actually remove carbon dioxide could give companies a way to claim they’re carbon free without undertaking costly work to reduce planet-warming emissions -- resulting in greater pollution overall. Even respected environmental groups like the Nature Conservancy have come under fire for selling offsets that protect forests no longer in danger of being torn down.

Several private markets have emerged to trade carbon credits, such as the Carbon Trade Exchange in London, though Singapore is among the first to offer trading of carbon offsets backed by a public bourse. Unlike carbon credits, which give the holder the right to emit carbon, carbon offsets are projects -- from forests to solar power -- that counterbalance the use of fossil fuels.

While not among the world’s biggest carbon emitters, tech companies have a sizable footprint thanks to energy-intensive data centers. As of April, of the 10 largest U.S. companies by market value, only four had announced plans to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050 -- all of them tech firms.

Google last year said its net carbon footprint over its lifetime was zero, while Microsoft aims to be carbon negative by 2030. Large corporations are mostly worried about the quality and scale of their offsets and projects they back, Cho said.

Climate Impact X will host an exchange for carbon offsets trading as well as a marketplace of nature conservancy projects such as forests, wetlands or mangroves that companies can support. The new platform is also backed by Singapore investor Temasek Holdings Pte., along with commercial banks Standard Chartered Plc and DBS Group Holdings Ltd.

Verify Projects

Climate Impact X will create a rating system for participants based on existing sustainability gauges such as the Gold Standard and will also use satellites, artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to verify the integrity of projects. The aim is to trade products such as futures and other derivatives on the exchange, said Lee Beng Hong, SGX’s head of fixed income, currencies and commodities.

The platform will operate at the scale of a startup initially, and is hiring at least 20 people across areas such as tech, operations, legal and sales. Run the numbers and know what it means for your search price if rates tick up a quarter point, but keep these worries in context,” said Danielle Hale, chief economist for realtor.com.\n“Even if mortgage rates rise, they are not the biggest challenge for today’s buyers, who are still contending with relatively few, fast-selling home choices and record high asking prices.”","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".SPX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":263,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":167266509,"gmtCreate":1624271555701,"gmtModify":1634008619805,"author":{"id":"3581998173257990","authorId":"3581998173257990","name":"kyawkh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6819d2405688957eac033bb43e588a5","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581998173257990","authorIdStr":"3581998173257990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wow[得意] ","listText":"Wow[得意] ","text":"Wow[得意]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/167266509","repostId":"2145081082","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":967,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":882147053,"gmtCreate":1631669782672,"gmtModify":1631889693536,"author":{"id":"3581998173257990","authorId":"3581998173257990","name":"kyawkh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6819d2405688957eac033bb43e588a5","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581998173257990","authorIdStr":"3581998173257990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Cool","listText":"Cool","text":"Cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/882147053","repostId":"1164586794","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":323,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":163520906,"gmtCreate":1623889334805,"gmtModify":1634026449052,"author":{"id":"3581998173257990","authorId":"3581998173257990","name":"kyawkh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6819d2405688957eac033bb43e588a5","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581998173257990","authorIdStr":"3581998173257990"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Long way to go for legalization","listText":"Long way to go for legalization","text":"Long way to go for legalization","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/163520906","repostId":"1191044253","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1191044253","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1623888378,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1191044253?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-17 08:06","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"World Bank rejects El Salvador request for help on bitcoin implementation","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1191044253","media":"Reuters","summary":"SAN SALVADOR, June 16 (Reuters) - The World Bank said on Wednesday it could not assist El Salvador's","content":"
SAN SALVADOR, June 16 (Reuters) - The World Bank said on Wednesday it could not assist El Salvador's bitcoin implementation given environmental and transparency drawbacks.
\n
\"We are committed to helping El Salvador in numerous ways including for currency transparency and regulatory processes,\" said a World Bank spokesperson via email.
\n
\"While the government did approach us for assistance on bitcoin, this is not something the World Bank can support given the environmental and transparency shortcomings.\"
\n
Earlier on Wednesday, Salvadoran Finance Minister Alejandro Zelaya said the country had sought technical assistance from the Bank as it seeks to use bitcoin as a parallel legal tender alongside the U.S. dollar.
\n
The minister also said ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund have been successful, though the fund said last week it saw \"macroeconomic, financial and legal issues\" with the country's adoption of bitcoin.
\n
Zelaya said on Wednesday the IMF was \"not against\" the bitcoin implementation. But in reality, you don't have to have a master's degree in finance to generate returns that beat those of the average investor. After all, the average investor, according to research by Dalbar, has underperformed the S&P 500 over the past 20 years through the end of 2019, with an average return of just over 4%.
\n
While there is certainly a lot to learn, beginners and those who haven't been able to devote countless hours to studying the market can still top the average investor by just following a few simple concepts.
\n
\n
1. Keep it simple with ETFs
\n
ETFs, or exchange-traded funds, are a great way for investors to get a diversified portfolio of stocks in one investment vehicle. ETFs are baskets of stocks that typically track an index, although there are many that track customized indexes and some that are even actively managed. But while they are diversified, like mutual funds, they trade on exchanges like stocks.
\n
Rather than building a diversified portfolio of stocks complete with growth and value names and stocks that balance each other out to outperform through various market cycles, you can accomplish all this through a few ETFs. You can invest in the biggest technology names through an ETF like the Invesco QQQ, which tracks the Nasdaq 100 index, and maybe balance that out with a broad-market ETF like the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF, which tracks all 3,700-plus stocks on the market, or a large-cap ETF, like the SPDR S&P 500 ETF.
\n
Investing in a few different ETFs, as opposed to a bunch of individual stocks that perhaps you haven't fully researched, will give you a diversified portfolio with access to the top-performing stocks as well as returns that, at worst, match the benchmarks. At best, some well-chosen ETFs can even beat the major benchmarks.
\n
2. Be patient and don't overreact to market volatility
\n
One of the biggest mistakes that the average investor makes is overreacting to market volatility. Invariably, when the market goes down, or suffers a correction, meaning a drop of 10%, many average investors tend to sell to cut their losses. But what they are doing is locking in their losses -- those paper losses only become real losses when you sell. If you hold through the volatility, you'll likely regain those losses and then some.
\n
Look at last year as a prime example. The market dropped about 33% in a span of about a month, finishing its drop on March 16. If you sold stocks on March 16 when the S&P 500 plunged to around 2,300, you locked in that 33% loss. But if you held on, well, the S&P 500 is now over 4,200 in a little over a year -- so you do the math.
\n
Conversely, it is also just as important not to chase returns. Many investors see a stock surge and buy in to ride the wave, but what they are often doing is buying high. They likely missed out on the catalyst that caused the surge, and now have a stock that has plateaued or will drop. That then leads to the vicious circle of getting frustrated and dumping at the drop -- in effect buying high and selling low. Been there, done that.
\n
3. Think long-term and have a goal
\n
Another mistake the average investor makes is trying to time the market, meaning buying low and selling high. This strategy rarely works for the average investor. If you are investing in stocks for short-term profit, you are missing the big picture.
\n
Whether you are investing in a portfolio of individual stocks or ETFs, you should go in with a mindset that you are in it for the long term to ride out the market volatility. If you set goals for your investments, the long-term focus is built in. If you are investing for college costs 15 years down the road, then stick to that plan. If you are investing for retirement in 25 years, then invest with that in mind.
\n
Your best opportunity to build wealth is to invest in good companies over the long haul, taking advantage of not only solid annual returns, but compounding dividend reinvestment and ongoing contributions to make your money work for you. Remember, a stock or ETF that even just tracks the benchmark is going to beat the average investor over time.
\n
Note that these simple ideas are just a start. As you grow in your investing journey, you can dive deeper into the concepts and strategies to become an even better investor. But these three concepts should help you generate better returns than the average investor.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Secrets to Beating the Market
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Secrets to Beating the Market\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-03 23:04 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Investing in the stock market may seem complicated with all of the jargon, investing strategies, and arcane concepts that you get bombarded with from myriad sources. Speculation that the next iPhone will have satellite capabilities ramped up this week after TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the phone will probably work with spectrum owned by Globalstar Inc.
\n
That’s led to conjecture that the iPhone will become something akin to a satellite phone, freeing users from having to rely on cell networks. But Apple’s plan is initially more limited in scope, according to the person, with the focus on helping customers handle crisis scenarios.
\n
And though the next iPhone could have the hardware needed for satellite communications, the features are unlikely to be ready before next year, said another person, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t yet public. The features could also change or be scrapped before they’re released.
\n
An Apple representative declined to comment.
\n
The first component, dubbed Emergency Message via Satellite, will let users text emergency services and contacts over a satellite network when there’s no cell signal available. That feature will be integrated into the Messages app as a third protocol -- alongside the standard SMS and iMessage -- and appear with gray message bubbles instead of green or blue. The second feature will be a tool to report major emergencies, such as plane crashes and sinking ships, also using satellite networks.
\n
The texting-via-satellite tool, codenamed Stewie inside Apple, will restrict messages to a shorter length. The texts will automatically push through to an emergency contact’s phone, even if the do-not-disturb setting is on. One planned design will let a user send the message by typing “Emergency SOS” where they would usually input a contact name. In addition to delivering texts, the service may eventually be able to handle some phone calls too.
\n
Such an option will be useful in areas such as mountains or remote lakes, where 4G or 5G coverage may be unavailable. As part of its broader efforts, Apple has even considered eventually deploying its own satellites, but this feature is likely to rely on existing networks.
\n
The second emergency feature is focused on letting users report a crisis. The phone will ask what kind of emergency is happening, such as whether it involves a car, boat, plane or fire.
\n
The system is also able to take more specific information, such as a person falling overboard or a ship sinking. It will ask a user if search and rescue services are needed, if there is suspicious behavior or weapons involved, and if a person has suffered a traumatic injury.
\n
When reaching emergency services, the feature can send a user’s location and Medical ID, a virtual card in the Health app with a list of a user’s medical history, age, medications, and information like height and weight. It can also a notify a user’s emergency contacts, typically a person’s family, friends or doctors.
\n
It’s unclear which emergency services or providers the system would tap into. The set of features would compete with the Garmin inReach device, which lets users send short messages or an SOS over satellite networks.
\n
Both features are, of course, dependent on satellite availability and local regulations. They’re not designed to work in every country, and Apple has created a mechanism that will ask users to be outdoors and walk in a certain direction to help the iPhone connect to a satellite. Linking to a network also won’t always be instantaneous, with testing of the feature indicating that it could sometimes take up to one minute to work.
\n
To connect to satellites, Apple will need a special chip. While the company is developing its own custom cellular modems for use in the coming years, it still plans to rely on a Qualcomm Inc. modem in the near term.
\n
Speculation that the next iPhone will have satellite capabilities sent shares of Globalstar soaring on Monday. That company previously said it had signed an agreement with an unidentified party to develop a new service -- a disclosure that some now believe is evidence that it’s Apple’s partner.
\n
Apple isn’t teaming up with Globalstar rival Iridium Communications Inc. on the effort, people familiar with matter said. And Omnispace LLC, another satellite company, hasn’t yet committed to building systems that could support such services, said industry analyst Tim Farrar.
\n
Apple plans to debut its latest iPhones as early as the middle of next month. Chairman Osamu Nagayama will seek to convince shareholders Friday he deserves another chance to try and overhaul the 145-year-old nuclear energy to electronics conglomerate.
\n
The 74-year-old is trying to win enough investor votes to stay at the helm of the crisis-stricken Japanese icon, which is under fire from corporate governance experts after an independent investigation uncovered alleged collusion with top government officials to influence last year’s board selection. On Friday, shareholders meet in Tokyo to vote on his and several other directors’ re-appointment, and analysts expect Nagayama to squeeze through by a narrow margin.
\n
The report was a rare public account of how Japan’s bureaucrats allegedly coordinated with a private company to exert control over foreign shareholders, and intensified the controversy surrounding a manufacturer roiled by accounting scandals, business missteps and the departure of its chief executive officer. Effissimo Capital Management Pte., Toshiba’s largest shareholder, said the report shows the Japanese company has “dysfunctional” corporate governance and an “ineffective” board of directors.
\n
“As the chairperson my priority is to provide Toshiba with the governance and leadership that you deserve,” Nagayama said in a letter to shareholders last week. “I pledge to you that I will continue to be an agent of positive change, not a protector of the status quo.”
\n
Toshiba doesn’t disclose how shareholders have exercised their votes ahead of the meeting, a company representative said.
\n
Once a storied name in Japan, Toshiba has faded dramatically since its glory days after years of management missteps. It paid a record fine in an accounting scandal and then lost billions on a bungled foray into nuclear power. The conglomerate invented flash memory three decades ago, but was forced to sell most of its prized chip business in 2018 because of losses in its nuclear-power operation. That deal led to an infusion of cash -- but also a large contingent of more vocal shareholders.
\n
Nagayama has vowed to bring in new board members to improve corporate governance, and Toshiba said this month it’s dropping two existing directors. Yet the chairman argued in his letter that the company needs a rapid rebuild rather than a reformation of the board.
\n
Outside lawyers appointed by Effissimo reported that Toshiba had teamed up with the Japanese government to repel activists and press shareholders not to act against management. The report mainly criticized former CEO Nobuaki Kurumatani, but stakeholders have also cast doubt on whether Nagayama fulfilled his duty as the chairman.
\n
Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, State Board of Administration of Florida and Calvert Research and Management are among shareholders who’ve disclosed they’re voting against Nagayama’s re-election. Toshiba’s management is “outdated” and its corporate governance needs improvement, said Chieko Matsuda, a professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University.
\n
“If he ends up approved, that would only be investors judging it’s not the best to hunt them all down at once,” said Shin Ushijima, president of Japan Corporate Governance Network. “Foreign investors are skeptical that he may not have done what he should have done.”
\n
But shareholders including California State Teachers’ Retirement System have indicated they are voting for Nagayama’s re-election. Nagayama’s backers point to his track record as a leader of Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. and an outside director at Sony Group Corp., with his departure only inviting further confusion.
\n
What Bloomberg Intelligence Says
\n
Toshiba’s governance may now improve allowing the company to focus on growth, following the results of an independent probe into last year’s shareholder meeting that found it attempted to influence a key vote.
