Investors fear that profits may be peaking at companies like Micron, Lyondell, and Western Digital.
\n
These concerns could be creating opportunities for investors. Micron, whose shares trade around $70, recently initiated a small dividend resulting in an 0.6% yield. J.P. Morgan analyst Harlan Sur wrote earlier this month that he expected Micron and its rivals to be “disciplined and prudent” about adding supply in the face of strong demand. He has an Overweight rating and a $140 price target on the stock.
\n
Western Digital, at around $61, is a leading maker of flash memory. Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore is upbeat on its prospects, giving the stock an Overweight rating and a $88 price target. He thinks the stock is too cheap given that he expects earnings of $10 a share next year.
\n
Organon, a Merck(MRK) spinoff that has a portfolio of off-patent drugs and a women’s health business, recently reported better-than-expected earnings. It has set an $1.12 annual dividend, for a 3.3% yield at a recent price of $33.50.
\n
Joe Cornell, the publisher of Spin-Off Research, has a Buy rating and a $45 price target on the stock. Organon has a “peer-leading” yield, he recently wrote, and potential “top-line growth and margin momentum over the medium-term.”
\n
Viatris, a generic drugmaker spun off from Pfizer(PFE), has the lowest P/E in the S&P 500 at 3.9. Its shares recently traded below $15.
\n
J.P. Morgan analyst Chris Schott was encouraged by the company’s second-quarter earnings report, but maintained a Neutral rating as he awaits more evidence of improving financial performance after a tough 2020. The stock has a 3% yield.
\n
Energy stocks have experienced a sharp pullback since June 1 because of a drop in oil prices and a sentiment shift away from the sector.
\n
Diamondback Energy, a leading exploration and production company in the Permian basin in Texas, has seen its shares drop to a recent $70 from $100. The company reported strong second-quarter results and boosted its dividend by 12.5% to an annualized $1.80 a share. The stock now yields about 2.6%.
\n
Like many E&Ps, Diamondback has a high free-cash flow yield. J.P. Morgan analyst Arun Jayaram is upbeat on Diamondback and recently estimated its net asset value at $126 a share. APA produces oil and gas in the U.S. and overseas and offers a play on a potentially large offshore oil field off Suriname in South America. Its shares trade around $16.
\n
Shares of PulteGroup, one of the largest U.S. home builders, have pulled back about 20% from a spring peak, to a recent $52 amid concerns about demand and pricing power.
\n
Evercore ISI analyst Stephen Kim, one of the most bullish Wall Street analysts on the sector, sees rising profitability for Pulte and peers. He has an Outperform rating on Pulte and a $93 price target. Investors fear that profits may be peaking at companies like Micron, Lyondell, and Western Digital.\nThese concerns could be creating opportunities for investors. He has an Overweight rating and a $140 price target on the stock.\nWestern Digital, at around $61, is a leading maker of flash memory. Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore is upbeat on its prospects, giving the stock an Overweight rating and a $88 price target. He thinks the stock is too cheap given that he expects earnings of $10 a share next year.\nOrganon, a Merck(MRK) spinoff that has a portfolio of off-patent drugs and a women’s health business, recently reported better-than-expected earnings. It has set an $1.12 annual dividend, for a 3.3% yield at a recent price of $33.50.\nJoe Cornell, the publisher of Spin-Off Research, has a Buy rating and a $45 price target on the stock. Organon has a “peer-leading” yield, he recently wrote, and potential “top-line growth and margin momentum over the medium-term.”\nViatris, a generic drugmaker spun off from Pfizer(PFE), has the lowest P/E in the S&P 500 at 3.9. Its shares recently traded below $15.\nJ.P. Morgan analyst Chris Schott was encouraged by the company’s second-quarter earnings report, but maintained a Neutral rating as he awaits more evidence of improving financial performance after a tough 2020. The stock has a 3% yield.\nEnergy stocks have experienced a sharp pullback since June 1 because of a drop in oil prices and a sentiment shift away from the sector.\nDiamondback Energy, a leading exploration and production company in the Permian basin in Texas, has seen its shares drop to a recent $70 from $100. The company reported strong second-quarter results and boosted its dividend by 12.5% to an annualized $1.80 a share. The stock now yields about 2.6%.\nLike many E&Ps, Diamondback has a high free-cash flow yield. J.P. Morgan analyst Arun Jayaram is upbeat on Diamondback and recently estimated its net asset value at $126 a share. APA produces oil and gas in the U.S. and overseas and offers a play on a potentially large offshore oil field off Suriname in South America. Its shares trade around $16.\nShares of PulteGroup, one of the largest U.S. home builders, have pulled back about 20% from a spring peak, to a recent $52 amid concerns about demand and pricing power.\nEvercore ISI analyst Stephen Kim, one of the most bullish Wall Street analysts on the sector, sees rising profitability for Pulte and peers. He has an Outperform rating on Pulte and a $93 price target. He sees about $8 a share in earnings this year and an above-consensus estimate of roughly $12 next year.\nLyondell, the world’s third-largest independent chemical company, is a major player in plastics. Its shares recently traded around $100.Its CEO, Bob Patel, recently told Barron’s Jack Hough: “Whether we’re at peak, and is there a moderation or a hard reset—this is at the heart of the debate today with investors. I think there is strong demand in front of us.”\nLincoln National, which offers life insurance, annuities, and other financial products, recently traded around $67, less than six times projected 2022 earnings and below a conservative measure of book value of $75. J.P. Morgan analyst Jimmy Bhullar likes Lincoln National, recently citing an “improving business mix” and “discount valuation.” He has an Overweight rating and a $81 price target.\nUnum, a provider of life and disability insurance, trades cheaply based on earnings and book value. I, on the other hand, believe that the stock has returned to being attractively priced. Apple has been executing flawlessly as of late, both during the COVID-19 crisis and through the messy post-pandemic environment of supply chain challenges, limited access to physical stores, etc.
\n
That said, my main concern regarding Apple stock, if at all, tends to be valuations. Around mid-May, I presented the graph below as a key reason to “confidently buy Apple” on year-to-date weakness. Since the day of that article, AAPL has climbed 14% in just short of 12 weeks against the S&P 500’s 5% rise.
\n
Figure 2: AAPL - Historical valuation multiples.
\n
Counterintuitively, despite the recent rally, I think that Apple shares have started to head towards undervaluation once again. Think of current year P/E of 28 times as a starting point, which seems rich at first glance. This multiple is based on pre-earnings EPS consensus of $5.18 for fiscal 2021.
\n
After July 27, Apple’s management team presented investors with two new pieces of information. First, fiscal Q3 consensus EPS of $1.01 proved to be understated by 29 cents. Mathematically, and adjusting only for the most recent earnings beat, full-year EPS estimates should have been closer to $5.47.
\n
The other part was fiscal Q4 outlook. While Apple did not provide specific guidance on revenues, it offered directional commentary on sales and offered projections on other P&L items (see below):
\n
\n
Revenue: Double-digit growth, absent a COVID-19 comeback, but at a rate lower than the 36% seen in June quarter due to foreign exchange, normalization of services trend, and even worse supply constraints on iPhone and iPad.
\n
Below revenue line: GM between 41.5% and 42.5%, opex between $11.3 billion and $11.5 billion, other income zero, tax rate of 16%.
\n
\n
I went ahead and plugged in the numbers. Wall Street projects revenue growth of 30% in fiscal Q4, which is in line with Apple’s vague outlook. Assuming the mid-point of the guidance range on all other P&L items, I estimate that next quarter’s EPS consensus should settle at $1.21 – about ten cents above where it currently stands.
\n
Lastly, consider that Apple has topped EPS consensus by 14 cents each quarter for the past ten periods. Add ten plus fourteen cents to the $5.47 mentioned above, and we are looking at a reasonable estimate of $5.71 in EPS for the current fiscal year. This represents a current P/E of only 25 times on the stock.
\n
This could be just an interesting coincidence, but a current-year P/E of 25 times was precisely the multiple that AAPL commanded in early May, before it leaped to nearly $150 per share last week. If I considered the stock a “confident buy” back then, I should have the same opinion now, at least for the sake of consistency.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple Stock Is Cheap, Here Is Why
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple Stock Is Cheap, Here Is Why\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-30 17:21 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Apple delivered strong Q3 results, but the stock went nowhere. Lancz & Associates Inc, an investment advisory firm based in Toledo, Ohio.\nRight after the Fed statement, the S&P 500 index reversed slight declines though it still ended a hair lower on the day.\nInvestors have been worried about how rising inflation and a spike in COVID-19 cases might impact the central bank’s plan to potentially start withdrawing its stimulus.\nThe central bank also said that higher inflation remained the result of “transitory factors.” The Fed kept its overnight benchmark interest rate near zero and left unchanged its bond-buying program.\nThe Nasdaq ended higher and shares of Google parent Alphabet Inc hit an all-time high as a surge in advertising spending helped it post record quarterly results. The stock ended up 3.2%.\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 127.59 points, or 0.36%, to 34,930.93, the S&P 500 lost 0.82 point, or 0.02%, to 4,400.64 and the Nasdaq Composite added 102.01 points, or 0.7%, to 14,762.58.\nThe Fed’s statement came at the conclusion of its latest two-day policy meeting.\n“They had a chance to signal they were going to become more hawkish and they chose not to take it. The most important thing is they are predictable and they are remaining predictable,” said Ellen Hazen, portfolio manager at F.L. Putnam Investment Management in Wellesley, Massachusetts.\nIn other earnings news, Microsoft Corp ended down 0.1% even as a boom in cloud services helped it beat Wall Street expectations for revenue and earnings.\nVolume on U.S. exchanges was 9.86 billion shares, compared with a similar average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.\nAdvancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.85-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.61-to-1 ratio favored advancers.\nThe S&P 500 posted 42 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 44 new highs and 67 new lows.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":351,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":801398397,"gmtCreate":1627481891719,"gmtModify":1633764579625,"author":{"id":"3582084105016877","authorId":"3582084105016877","name":"Joshsyb","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/be55cbdae4c1d8a842fff18a861779e0","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582084105016877","authorIdStr":"3582084105016877"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Up up up! Here is why.
\n
DespiteApple’s outstanding fiscal third quarter numbers, reported on July 27, Apple stock failed to find support. Shares were down -1.2% after the quarterly report, after having dipped another -1.5% on earnings day itself.
\n
Some, including BMO Capital’s Tim Long, have argued that AAPL has reached fair valuation. I, on the other hand, believe that the stock has returned to being attractively priced. I present below the calculations that support my thesis.
\n
Figure 1: New York Apple Store (Fifth Avenue).
\n
Great business, good valuation
\n
I can not start a debate about Apple stock price and valuations without emphasizing what seems obvious to me.
The Apple Maven argues that AAPL is attractively valued once again. Here is why.\nDespiteApple’s outstanding fiscal third quarter numbers, reported on July 27, Apple stock failed to find support. Shares were down -1.2% after the quarterly report, after having dipped another -1.5% on earnings day itself.\nSome, including BMO Capital’s Tim Long, have argued that AAPL has reached fair valuation. I, on the other hand, believe that the stock has returned to being attractively priced. I present below the calculations that support my thesis.\nFigure 1: New York Apple Store (Fifth Avenue).\nGreat business, good valuation\nI can not start a debate about Apple stock price and valuations without emphasizing what seems obvious to me. Apple has been executing flawlessly as of late, both during the COVID-19 crisis and through the messy post-pandemic environment of supply chain challenges, limited access to physical stores, etc.\nThat said, my main concern regarding Apple stock, if at all, tends to be valuations. Around mid-May, I presented the graph below as a key reason to “confidently buy Apple” on year-to-date weakness. Since the day of that article, AAPL has climbed 14% in just short of 12 weeks against the S&P 500’s 5% rise.\nFigure 2: AAPL - Historical valuation multiples.\nCounterintuitively, despite the recent rally, I think that Apple shares have started to head towards undervaluation once again. After the expected flight of Unity 23in September 2021, the company’s sole mothership, Eve, will be grounded for an 8 month enhancement period. During this heavy maintenance period, Virgin Galactic will not be able to conduct any space flights until summer of 2022. We view it positively that the company is investing in increasing its long-term space flight capacity; however, these investments take time,” Liwag wrote in a note sent to clients.
\n
The enhancements planned will improve Eve and allow it to fly more than once per week. Before the Eve is grounded, the company has scheduled an additional flight test for September this year.
He sees about $8 a share in earnings this year and an above-consensus estimate of roughly $12 next year.
\n
Lyondell, the world’s third-largest independent chemical company, is a major player in plastics. Its shares recently traded around $100.Its CEO, Bob Patel, recently told Barron’s Jack Hough: “Whether we’re at peak, and is there a moderation or a hard reset—this is at the heart of the debate today with investors. I think there is strong demand in front of us.”
\n
Lincoln National, which offers life insurance, annuities, and other financial products, recently traded around $67, less than six times projected 2022 earnings and below a conservative measure of book value of $75. J.P. Morgan analyst Jimmy Bhullar likes Lincoln National, recently citing an “improving business mix” and “discount valuation.” He has an Overweight rating and a $81 price target.
\n
Unum, a provider of life and disability insurance, trades cheaply based on earnings and book value. That reflects in part concerns about its long-term care insurance reserves, which were strengthened in 2020. Lyondell has the highest multiple in the group, at 6.5 times estimated 2022 earnings.\nThe other six stocks are drugmakers Viatris(VTRS) and Organon(OGN); oil and gas producers Diamondback Energy(FANG) and APA(APA), formerly Apache; home builder PulteGroup(PHM), and insurer Unum(UNM).\nSeveral of the stocks have had big gains over the past year, including Diamondback, Micron, and Lincoln National, but all remain cheap based on earnings.\n10 in the Bargain Bin\nHere are the 10 stocks in the S&P 500 with the lowest price-to-earnings ratios.\n\n\n\nCompany / Ticker\nRecent Price\nMarket Value (bil)\n1-Yr Price Change\n2022E* P/E Ratio\n\n\n\n\nViatris / VTRS\n$14.82\n$17.9\n-10.8%\n3.9\n\n\nUnum Group / UNM\n26.14\n5.3\n38.8\n4.8\n\n\nDiamondback Energy / FANG\n69.80\n12.6\n56.8\n5.2\n\n\nWestern Digital / WDC\n61.07\n18.7\n73.0\n5.5\n\n\nAPA / APA\n16.68\n6.3\n4.3\n5.6\n\n\nPulteGroup / PHM\n52.43\n13.6\n12.1\n5.6\n\n\nOrganon / OGN\n33.61\n8.5\nN/A\n5.7\n\n\nLincoln National / LNC\n66.87\n12.5\n79.6\n5.8\n\n\nMicron Technology / MU\n70.60\n79.5\n59.6\n5.9\n\n\nLyondellBasell Industries / LYB\n100.36\n33.5\n43.8\n6.5\n\n\n\n*P/E ratio based on calendar 2022 estimates; E=estimate; N/A=not applicable\nSource: FactSet\nWhy are the stocks so inexpensive?\nSome like Viatris and Organon have ample, but manageable debt. Investors fear that profits may be peaking at companies like Micron, Lyondell, and Western Digital.\nThese concerns could be creating opportunities for investors. That reflects in part concerns about its long-term care insurance reserves, which were strengthened in 2020. The stock, around $26, trades for about five times projected 2022 earnings and for half of book value.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":691,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":801458556,"gmtCreate":1627530032075,"gmtModify":1631884161709,"author":{"id":"3582084105016877","authorId":"3582084105016877","name":"Joshsyb","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/be55cbdae4c1d8a842fff18a861779e0","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582084105016877","authorIdStr":"3582084105016877"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Thanks Powell for helping to drive the market!
