But a series of unfortunate events — including the failure of some vaccine companies to create or up production and the surge of the Delta variant — have resulted what health equity advocates have long feared: unequal distribution of vaccines among rich and poor countries.
\n
Pfizer (PFE) CEO Albert Bourla told Yahoo Finance the company realized the need and more than doubled its projected output for 2021 as a result.
\n
\"We changed, dramatically, our strategy. We had invested to produce 1.3 billion doses for 2021, when we realized the situation, we put way more investments into the system and we were able to raise the volumes to 3 billion for this year, and 4 billion for next year,\" Bourla said.
\n
The company is also working on a possible treatment for the novel coronavirus. \"I keep my fingers crossed that the studies will be positive, and I hope we'll be able to know if the studies are positive before the end of the year,\" he said.
\n
Pfizer was the first company to receive authorization as well as full approval for adults in the U.S. for its COVID-19 vaccine. It also has a booster dose authorized for certain segments of the population. This action has been criticized by some as doses that are being taken away from the poorer global populations.
\n
The company, along with rival Moderna (MRNA), has come under increased pressure by global advocacy groups to produce and donate more doses to the world instead of focusing on boosters in rich countries.
\n
The U.S. has promised more than 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines globally, of which about 200 million have been shipped to-date. But experts say more doses are needed.
\n
Pfizer announced plans to open a manufacturing hub with South Africa's Biovac Institute and anticipates it will be operational by early next year. Until then, donating more doses from the U.S. — which is already administering third doses domestically — remains a short-term solution.
\n
Other countries have also asked to be allowed to donate their unused doses, and recent reports suggest the contract with the company was a barrier.
\n
Bourla told Yahoo Finance that within two days of receiving such a request, Pfizer has been able to work with the country to allow sharing of doses.
\n
Meanwhile, the Biden administration supports waiving intellectually property (IP) rights, a proposal sent by India and South Africa to the World Trade Organization, to encourage the transfer of technology to middle- and lower-income countries to increase global capacity. Pfizer has maintained that there isn't enough skilled labor in these countries, and in some cases the internal infrastructure in the country is a barrier to equitable distribution.
\n
In a recent open letter, Bourla noted that waiving IP would also create unhelpful competition for raw materials.
\n
\"The proposed waiver for COVID-19 vaccines, threatens to disrupt the flow of raw materials. It will unleash a scramble for the critical inputs we require in order to make a safe and effective vaccine. Entities with little or no experience in manufacturing vaccines are likely to chase the very raw materials we require to scale our production, putting the safety and security of all at risk,\" Bourla said.
\n
On Monday, Bourla added that rival Moderna had already offered not to enforce its patent, and couldn't find any takers — highlighting the point that there is, in fact, little additional capacity out there.
\n
Pfizer is now awaiting authorization of its vaccine for kids aged 5-11. A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel is set to meet and discuss the data this week, with an anticipated Centers for Disease Control green light in early November.
\n
The vaccine proved 90.7% effective with no concerning side effects reported, according to the data from the company.
","source":"yahoofinance","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Pfizer CEO says company will produce 4 billion COVID-19 doses in 2022
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nPfizer CEO says company will produce 4 billion COVID-19 doses in 2022\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-10-26 14:47 GMT+8 Yahoo Finance\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Global pressure on just a handful of companies producing COVID-19 vaccines was not the anticipated scenario for fall of 2021. But not every","content":"
(CNN Business) - Microsoft is rolling out its first major Windows update in six years. But not everyone will be able to get it right away.
\n
Starting Tuesday, Windows 11 will be available as a free download to existing Windows users depending on the hardware and age of their PC device.Microsoft (MSFT) previously said its \"phased and measured\" approach to introducing the new operating system will begin with Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come preloaded with Windows. Users will be notified when they're eligible for the update from now through mid-2022.
\n
While the update isn't quite the substantial change from Windows 8 to Windows 10 that came out in 2015, Windows 11 features a handful of notable design changes, including a new interface that is intended to bring \"a sense of calm and ease.\" A new Start menu shows recently opened files, regardless of which device was used. And a new personalized Widgets feed, powered by artificial intelligence, promises to provide a faster way to access apps.
\n
Other updates are geared towardproviding more flexibility, such as more multitasking tools, support for Android mobile apps in its new app store, and an integration with Microsoft Teams, its workplace chat and videoconferencing app.
\n
Unlike Apple (APLE), which unveils a new operating system for its Mac computers each year,Microsoft (MSFT) takes a staggered approach.
\n
Geoff Blaber, CEO of market research firm CCS Insight, said the latest update won't be \"revolutionary,\" but he believes it'll do enough to please its massive user base. But not everyone will be able to get it right away.\nStarting Tuesday, Windows 11 will be available as a free download to existing Windows users depending on the hardware and age of their PC device.Microsoft (MSFT) previously said its \"phased and measured\" approach to introducing the new operating system will begin with Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come preloaded with Windows. Users will be notified when they're eligible for the update from now through mid-2022.\nWhile the update isn't quite the substantial change from Windows 8 to Windows 10 that came out in 2015, Windows 11 features a handful of notable design changes, including a new interface that is intended to bring \"a sense of calm and ease.\" A new Start menu shows recently opened files, regardless of which device was used. And a new personalized Widgets feed, powered by artificial intelligence, promises to provide a faster way to access apps.\nOther updates are geared towardproviding more flexibility, such as more multitasking tools, support for Android mobile apps in its new app store, and an integration with Microsoft Teams, its workplace chat and videoconferencing app.\nUnlike Apple (APLE), which unveils a new operating system for its Mac computers each year,Microsoft (MSFT) takes a staggered approach.\nGeoff Blaber, CEO of market research firm CCS Insight, said the latest update won't be \"revolutionary,\" but he believes it'll do enough to please its massive user base. (Windows 10 runs on about 1.3 billion devices worldwide, according to Microsoft.)\n\"Windows 11 is an iterative release that pinpoints where Windows needs greater ambition rather than introducing the sweeping changes seen with its predecessor,\" he said. \"Microsoft is making adjustments to areas that have potential to move the needle on user experience, engagement and the ever-expanding reach of Office 365 apps.\"\nIt could also increase hardware sales as it gets closer to the end of Windows 10 support in 2025.\nAt a livestreamed media event last month, Microsoft also showed off updates to its Surface line that'll ship with Windows 11. Nikola accused Tesla of mimicking its design on items like the wraparound windshield, mid-entry doors and aerodynamic fuselage.\nNikola’s lawsuit also said Tesla tried to hire the company’s chief engineer.\nNikola “has dropped the ball and this 2018 action is languishing without explanation or apparent good cause,” Judge James Donato wrote in an order last week, as shared byThe Verge.\nNikola now has until Oct. 6, 2021 to show in writing cause for the case to continue and not be dismissed.\nBoth Nikola and Tesla stopped responding to the Northern District Court of California. The court asked in July and September for responses from the two companies.\nWhy It’s Important:Nikola argued in 2018 that Tesla was causing “confusion in the market” by using similar designs in its highly anticipated semi-truck.\nNikola argued for $2 billion in damages for lost sales from Tesla.\nSince the lawsuit, Nikola has gone through several changes and highly public negative events. Nikola founder and former CEOTrevor Miltonwas indicted for fraud in July. Milton was released on a $100 million bond and currently awaits trial.\nPrice Action:NKLA shares traded at $10.66 on Friday. Shares have traded between $9.02 and $37.95 over the last 52 weeks. Shares of NKLA traded at nearly $80 in June 2020.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":988,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":865246714,"gmtCreate":1632992644856,"gmtModify":1632992644968,"author":{"id":"3583810443192023","authorId":"3583810443192023","name":"KingPohPoh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dfce40ecb4c73eaf335eeb992685bc05","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3583810443192023","authorIdStr":"3583810443192023"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"哈哈哈","listText":"哈哈哈","text":"哈哈哈","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/865246714","repostId":"2171300933","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":963,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":866532215,"gmtCreate":1632789661037,"gmtModify":1632797585214,"author":{"id":"3583810443192023","authorId":"3583810443192023","name":"KingPohPoh","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dfce40ecb4c73eaf335eeb992685bc05","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3583810443192023","authorIdStr":"3583810443192023"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/866532215","repostId":"1145220085","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1145220085","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1632789238,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1145220085?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-09-28 08:33","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why 4430 Is A Crucial Line In The Sand For The S&P 500 This Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1145220085","media":"zerohedge","summary":"After a strong overnight session, S&P has slumped since the European open, back in the red and hover","content":"
After a strong overnight session, S&P has slumped since the European open, back in the red and hovering at a critical technical level for the week...
\n
As SpotGamma details,a big point of conversation this week will be the quarterly JPM collar roll, which currently holds short calls at 4430(morehere). The holiday-shortened week then features several notable company updates and economic data releases.
\n
GameStop and Lululemon Athletica release quarterly results on Wednesday, followed by International Paper on Thursday and Kroger on Friday. Moderna, Danaher, and Home Depot managements will also speak with investors on Thursday. Finally, Albemarle hosts an investor day on Friday.
\n
The economic data highlight of the week will be Friday’s August producer price index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists’ consensus estimate is for a 0.6% monthly rise in the headline index, and a 0.5% increase for the core PPI—which leaves out more volatile food and energy prices. Both the core and headline indexes rose 1% in July. The August consumer price index will be out the following week, on Sept. 14.
\n
On Tuesday, the Federal Reserve will release its latest beige book, full of updates on economic, hiring, and business conditions in each of the dozen central bank districts. For the second quarter, consumer credit rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 8.8%, reflecting pent-up demand.
\n
The Federal Reserve releases the beige book for the sixth of eight times this year. Consensus estimate is for 10 million job openings on the last business day of July. In June, there were 10.1 million openings, the fourth consecutive monthly record.\nThe Federal Reserve reports consumer credit data for July. Total outstanding consumer debt increased by $37.7 billion to a record $4.32 trillion in June. For the second quarter, consumer credit rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 8.8%, reflecting pent-up demand.\nThe Federal Reserve releases the beige book for the sixth of eight times this year. The report summarizes current economic conditions among the 12 Federal Reserve districts.\nThursday 9/9\nHome Depot hosts a conference call to discuss its ESG strategy, led by Ron Jarvis, the company’s chief sustainability officer.\nModerna hosts its fifth annual R&D day to discuss vaccines in the company’s pipeline. CEO Stéphane Bancel will be among the presenters.\nDanaher holds an investor and analyst meeting, hosted by its CEO Rainer Blair.\nInternational Paper, Synchrony Financial, and Willis Towers Watson hold investor days.\nThe European Central Bank announces its monetary-policy decision. The ECB is expected to keep its key interest rate unchanged at minus 0.5%.\nThe Department of Labor reports initial jobless claims for the week ending on Sept. 4. In August, claims averaged 355,000 a week, the lowest since the pandemic’s onset. This will also be the last week that the extra $300 from federal enhanced unemployment benefits is available. They are set to expire by Sept. 6.\nFriday 9/10\nThe BLS reports the producer price index for August. The lawsuit could officially come to an end with Nikola ending communication with court officials.
\n
What Happened:In 2018, Nikola filed a lawsuit against Tesla for patent infringement. Nikola accused Tesla of mimicking its design on items like the wraparound windshield, mid-entry doors and aerodynamic fuselage.
\n
Nikola’s lawsuit also said Tesla tried to hire the company’s chief engineer.
\n
Nikola “has dropped the ball and this 2018 action is languishing without explanation or apparent good cause,” Judge James Donato wrote in an order last week, as shared byThe Verge.
\n
Nikola now has until Oct. 6, 2021 to show in writing cause for the case to continue and not be dismissed.
\n
Both Nikola and Tesla stopped responding to the Northern District Court of California. The court asked in July and September for responses from the two companies.
\n
Why It’s Important:Nikola argued in 2018 that Tesla was causing “confusion in the market” by using similar designs in its highly anticipated semi-truck.
\n
Nikola argued for $2 billion in damages for lost sales from Tesla.
\n
Since the lawsuit, Nikola has gone through several changes and highly public negative events. Nikola founder and former CEOTrevor Miltonwas indicted for fraud in July. The lawsuit could officially come to an end with Nikola ending communication with court officials.\nWhat Happened:In 2018, Nikola filed a lawsuit against Tesla for patent infringement. The holiday-shortened week then feat","content":"
U.S. stock and bond markets are closed on Monday for Labor Day. The holiday-shortened week then features several notable company updates and economic data releases.
\n
GameStop and Lululemon Athletica release quarterly results on Wednesday, followed by International Paper on Thursday and Kroger on Friday. Analog Devices—fresh off of its $21 billion acquisition of Maxim Integrated Products—will host an investor day on Wednesday.
The European Central Bank also announces a monetary-policy decision on Thursday, but is widely expected to hold its target interest rate at its current level of negative 0.5%.
\n
Monday 9/6
\n
Stock and fixed-income markets are closed in observance of Labor Day.
\n
Tuesday 9/7
\n
Casey’s General Stores and Coupa Software announce earnings.
\n
Wednesday 9/8
\n
Copart, GameStop, and Lululemon Athletica release quarterly results.
\n
Analog Devices hosts a conference call to discuss its capital-allocation plans and update its outlook for fiscal 2021. The company recently closed its $21 billion acquisition of Maxim Integrated Products.
\n
Global Payments, Johnson Controls International, and ResMed hold virtual investor days.
\n
The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Consensus estimate is for 10 million job openings on the last business day of July. In June, there were 10.1 million openings, the fourth consecutive monthly record.
\n
The Federal Reserve reports consumer credit data for July. Total outstanding consumer debt increased by $37.7 billion to a record $4.32 trillion in June. For the second quarter, consumer credit rose at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 8.8%, reflecting pent-up demand.
\n
The Federal Reserve releases the beige book for the sixth of eight times this year. The report summarizes current economic conditions among the 12 Federal Reserve districts.
\n
Thursday 9/9
\n
Home Depot hosts a conference call to discuss its ESG strategy, led by Ron Jarvis, the company’s chief sustainability officer.
\n
Moderna hosts its fifth annual R&D day to discuss vaccines in the company’s pipeline. CEO Stéphane Bancel will be among the presenters.
\n
Danaher holds an investor and analyst meeting, hosted by its CEO Rainer Blair.
\n
International Paper, Synchrony Financial, and Willis Towers Watson hold investor days.
\n
The European Central Bank announces its monetary-policy decision. The ECB is expected to keep its key interest rate unchanged at minus 0.5%.
\n
The Department of Labor reports initial jobless claims for the week ending on Sept. 4. In August, claims averaged 355,000 a week, the lowest since the pandemic’s onset. This will also be the last week that the extra $300 from federal enhanced unemployment benefits is available.
