meeting will be in focus this week, and may set the stage for a long-awaited announcement of asset-purchase tapering. Meanwhile, traders will also await more data on the U.S. economic recovery with the Labor Department's monthly jobs report later this week.</p>\n<p>The Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) November meeting will take place from Tuesday to Wednesday, with the policy statement and press conference from the meeting serving as the central bank's penultimate opportunity this year to announce formal plans to begin rolling back its crisis-era quantitative easing program. For the past year-and-a-half, the central bank has been purchasing $120 billion per month in agency mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> major tool to support the economy during the pandemic.</p>\n<p>In late September, the FOMC's latest monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/POWL\">Powell</a> suggested the central bank was apt to announce the start of tapering before year-end, and continue the tapering process until \"around the middle of next year.\"</p>\n<p>\"The upcoming FOMC meeting will be important for three reasons: 1) the announcement of tapering; 2) guidance around what tapering means for the path of hikes; and 3) nuanced changes in views around inflation risks given recent data,\" wrote <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a> economist Michelle Meyer in a note.</p>\n<p>\"The statement that announces the new pace of asset purchases will be followed by a note regarding flexibility stating that asset purchases are not on a pre-set course and will depend on the outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as an assessment of the efficacy of asset purchases,\" she predicted.</p>\n<p>She noted that Powell may also use the press conference to reiterate that the end of tapering would not necessarily indicate the start of rate hikes, and that both policy actions are distinct. In previous public remarks, Powell has already made a similar point in previous public remarks, saying, \"the timing and pace of the coming reduction in asset purchases will not be intended to carry a direct signal regarding the timing of interest rate liftoff.\"</p>\n<p>Given the market has been anticipating the start to tapering for months now, speculation around when the Fed will make a move on interest rates has become a point of particular interest to investors. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ISBC\">Investors</a> and economists have mulled whether the Fed may need to act more quickly than previously telegraphed on adjusting interest rates to stave off inflation, which has proven more long-lasting than some had suggested.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f0f0ae63a784eef5578397df02340483\" tg-width=\"4932\" tg-height=\"3288\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 24: Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell testifies during a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Capitol Hill on September 24, 2020 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Drew Angerer/Getty Images)Drew Angerer via Getty Images</span></p>\n<p>In September, core personal consumption expenditures — the Fed's preferred gauge of underlying inflation — rose 3.6% over last year for a fourth consecutive month, coming in at the fastest clip since 1991. And earlier this month, Powell acknowledged in public remarks that the supply chain constraints and shortages that spurred the latest rise in prices are \"likely to last longer than previously expected, likely well into next year.\"</p>\n<p>While the central bank will not release an updated Summary of Economic Projections with their policy statement on Wednesday, the latest projections from the September meeting suggested the committee was split on rate hikes for 2022, with nine members seeing no rate hikes by the end of next year while the other nine members saw at least <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike.</p>\n<p>\"I think the Fed has pretty well determined to start the taper pretty quickly. We expect them to announce it next week and then start it soon thereafter, so that's pretty well carved in stone,\" Kathy Jones, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SCHW\">Charles Schwab</a> chief fixed income strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live last week. \"I think the big debate now is how quickly the Fed moves toward actually raising rates. The expectation in the market has really shifted to expecting as many as two rate hikes in 2022 and 2023 ... that’s a pretty aggressive pace of tightening.\"</p>\n<h2>October jobs report</h2>\n<p>One of this week's most closely watched pieces of economic data will be the October jobs report, which is due for release on Friday from the Labor Department.</p>\n<p>Economists are looking to see a pick-up in the pace of hiring for October after a disappointing print in September, when just 194,000 non-farm payrolls returned versus the half million expected. Over the past two months, payroll gains averaged at just 280,000. The unemployment rate is expected to take another small step toward pre-pandemic levels in October as well, with the jobless rate anticipated to dip to 4.7% from 4.8% the prior month.</p>\n<p>Still, the labor market has still fallen short its pre-pandemic conditions on a number of fronts. The unemployment rate has yet to return to its 50-year low of 3.5% from February 2020. And as of September, the civilian labor force was still down by about 3.1 million individuals from pre-virus levels.</p>\n<p>One factor weighing on the labor market in August and September was the Delta variant, which may have deterred some workers from seeking employment in person for risk of infection. And an ongoing element dragging on the labor market's recovery has been a mismatch of supply and demand, with employers struggling to fill a near-record number of job openings while voluntary quits jumped to a historically high level.</p>\n<p>\"Next week’s October payrolls report will shed light on whether supply eased on diminishing constraints or if the labor market continues to face headwinds for now,\" wrote Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist for High Frequency Economics, in a note last week.</p>\n<p>But some data from the past couple weeks has reflected favorably on conditions in the labor market in October. Weekly new unemployment claims broke below 300,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic during the survey week for the October jobs report, or the week that includes the 12th of the month. And in the Conference Board's October Consumer Confidence Index, just 10.6% of consumers said jobs were \"hard to get,\" down from 13.0% in September. Meanwhile, traders will also await more data on the U.S. economic recovery with the Labor Department's monthly jobs report later this week.\nThe Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) November meeting will take place from Tuesday to Wednesday, with the policy statement and press conference from the meeting serving as the central bank's penultimate opportunity this year to announce formal plans to begin rolling back its crisis-era quantitative easing program. For the past year-and-a-half, the central bank has been purchasing $120 billion per month in agency mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, as one major tool to support the economy during the pandemic.\nIn late September, the FOMC's latest monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggested the central bank was apt to announce the start of tapering before year-end, and continue the tapering process until \"around the middle of next year.\"\n\"The upcoming FOMC meeting will be important for three reasons: 1) the announcement of tapering; 2) guidance around what tapering means for the path of hikes; and 3) nuanced changes in views around inflation risks given recent data,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note.\n\"The statement that announces the new pace of asset purchases will be followed by a note regarding flexibility stating that asset purchases are not on a pre-set course and will depend on the outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as an assessment of the efficacy of asset purchases,\" she predicted.\nShe noted that Powell may also use the press conference to reiterate that the end of tapering would not necessarily indicate the start of rate hikes, and that both policy actions are distinct. And earlier this month, Powell acknowledged in public remarks that the supply chain constraints and shortages that spurred the latest rise in prices are \"likely to last longer than previously expected, likely well into next year.\"\nWhile the central bank will not release an updated Summary of Economic Projections with their policy statement on Wednesday, the latest projections from the September meeting suggested the committee was split on rate hikes for 2022, with nine members seeing no rate hikes by the end of next year while the other nine members saw at least one hike.\n\"I think the Fed has pretty well determined to start the taper pretty quickly. We expect them to announce it next week and then start it soon thereafter, so that's pretty well carved in stone,\" Kathy Jones, Charles Schwab chief fixed income strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live last week. \"I think the big debate now is how quickly the Fed moves toward actually raising rates. The expectation in the market has really shifted to expecting as many as two rate hikes in 2022 and 2023 ... that’s a pretty aggressive pace of tightening.\"\nOctober jobs report\nOne of this week's most closely watched pieces of economic data will be the October jobs report, which is due for release on Friday from the Labor Department.\nEconomists are looking to see a pick-up in the pace of hiring for October after a disappointing print in September, when just 194,000 non-farm payrolls returned versus the half million expected. Over the past two months, payroll gains averaged at just 280,000. The unemployment rate is expected to take another small step toward pre-pandemic levels in October as well, with the jobless rate anticipated to dip to 4.7% from 4.8% the prior month.\nStill, the labor market has still fallen short its pre-pandemic conditions on a number of fronts. The unemployment rate has yet to return to its 50-year low of 3.5% from February 2020. LIFE concept car, sketching out a vision for a fully electric small family car that will cost roughly €20,000 ($23,720).</p>\n<p>Diess spoke to CNN Business' Anna Stewart on Monday:</p>\n<p><b>You want at least 50% of your</b> <b>car sales to be electric</b> <b>by 2030. Some of your competitors have more ambitious targets. Why are you a bit further back?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>In Europe we are already leading. Even in the US we have been in second place for the last months, and in China we are growing fast. We think we will become the market leader for EVs ... We don't want to pull back, for instance, from Latin America, where electric cars will probably not be the solution for climate change. In Latin America, the natural way forward is to use biofuels which are CO2 neutral, which is still combustion engine. That is why we don't say we will finish production of [internal combustion engine] cars so soon because we will need them in some parts of the world. Electrification is not the solution in every place.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6b3b5ebc6d4d292440e3038272ce46bd\" tg-width=\"780\" tg-height=\"438\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Volkswagen brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter presents the ID. LIFE concept car.</span></p>\n<p><b>Let's talk about the</b> <b>semiconductor supply crunch. Because obviously, that's been a big problem for so many carmakers, yourself included. Do you think it's going to get worse before it gets better? And do you think you'll have to reduce production or close plants?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>It has gotten worse already. We expected that we would have relief after the summer break, which didn't happen because in Malaysia, we had really quite significant problems with Covid. Some of our suppliers, the back ends of our suppliers are mostly based in Malaysia, and three plants were hit hard. We think that we will overcome this situation towards the end of the month, and then we should see relief. Semiconductors will be on short supply probably for several months.</p>\n<p><b>Now let's talk about autonomous technology. Because I know that while we are all transitioning towards electric that's something you're really passionate about. How will the adoption of autonomous technology go?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>We see a much bigger transition for the industry when cars are becoming autonomous, because cars will be used differently, used by more people. You can you can send your children or your grandparents in a car somewhere. Now imagine!</p>\n<p>There's a lot of of business potential and it's still a long way to go. Our first fleets probably will come to market in 2025, and the first private cars driving autonomously also in 2025 or 2026. But it's now time to invest, and to prepare. Is this to help with autonomous driving, and the idea that lots of people will share cars in the future?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>Yeah, sharing is important. Autonomous is a different game because we think that robotaxis will play a major role, but also private cars are going to be shared ... we think there's a lot of potential for growth.</p>\n<p>The best starting point for such a mobility platform is definitely the rental car companies. They are profitable already today. And if you add to rental, sharing, short term leases, even the fleets of our loaner cars from our retail organization, you can imagine a huge mobility platform.</p>\n<p><b>Volkswagen is of course very competitive with Tesla. There have also been many parallels drawn between yourself and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, not least given your very active social media presence. Have you taken a leaf out of his playbook?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>[Laughs] No, know I don't see any parallels. I highly regard what he's doing. I think he's a brilliant guy. And he really makes a difference. He's changing the world with his ventures.</p>\n<p>I really like that he is thinking very long into the future. He's thinking far. And he's brilliant guy. But we are quite different. He is very focused on Tesla, on his story. I'm running a big traditional company, which we try to prepare for the future. And I think we also require different characters. I like him a lot, but I think we are quite different.</p>\n<p><b>Is it true he was once tried to hire you as Tesla CEO?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>I don't know. To achieve those goals, he has to dramatically shift one of the world's largest carmakers away from the internal combustion engine.\nDiess spoke to CNN Business from the International Motor Show in Munich, where Volkswagen(VLKAF) unveiled the ID. LIFE concept car, sketching out a vision for a fully electric small family car that will cost roughly €20,000 ($23,720).\nDiess spoke to CNN Business' Anna Stewart on Monday:\nYou want at least 50% of your car sales to be electric by 2030. Some of your competitors have more ambitious targets. Why are you a bit further back?\nDiess:In Europe we are already leading. Even in the US we have been in second place for the last months, and in China we are growing fast. We think we will become the market leader for EVs ... We don't want to pull back, for instance, from Latin America, where electric cars will probably not be the solution for climate change. In Latin America, the natural way forward is to use biofuels which are CO2 neutral, which is still combustion engine. That is why we don't say we will finish production of [internal combustion engine] cars so soon because we will need them in some parts of the world. Because obviously, that's been a big problem for so many carmakers, yourself included. Do you think it's going to get worse before it gets better? And do you think you'll have to reduce production or close plants?\nDiess:It has gotten worse already. We expected that we would have relief after the summer break, which didn't happen because in Malaysia, we had really quite significant problems with Covid. Some of our suppliers, the back ends of our suppliers are mostly based in Malaysia, and three plants were hit hard. We think that we will overcome this situation towards the end of the month, and then we should see relief. Semiconductors will be on short supply probably for several months.\nNow let's talk about autonomous technology. Because I know that while we are all transitioning towards electric that's something you're really passionate about. How will the adoption of autonomous technology go?\nDiess:We see a much bigger transition for the industry when cars are becoming autonomous, because cars will be used differently, used by more people. You can you can send your children or your grandparents in a car somewhere. Now imagine!\nThere's a lot of of business potential and it's still a long way to go. Our first fleets probably will come to market in 2025, and the first private cars driving autonomously also in 2025 or 2026. But it's now time to invest, and to prepare. Is this to help with autonomous driving, and the idea that lots of people will share cars in the future?\nDiess:Yeah, sharing is important. Autonomous is a different game because we think that robotaxis will play a major role, but also private cars are going to be shared ... we think there's a lot of potential for growth.\nThe best starting point for such a mobility platform is definitely the rental car companies. They are profitable already today. And if you add to rental, sharing, short term leases, even the fleets of our loaner cars from our retail organization, you can imagine a huge mobility platform.\nVolkswagen is of course very competitive with Tesla. There have also been many parallels drawn between yourself and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, not least given your very active social media presence. MAJA HITIJ/GETTY IMAGES</span></p>\n<p>Tesla Inc. set its shareholder meeting for Oct. 7 at the Fremont, Calif., factory, with a call for reducing its directors’ terms among the proposals the electric-car maker will bring to the table, the company said in filing late Friday.</p>\n<p>One of the proposals calls for each director’s term to be reduced from three years to two years. Tesla’s board currently has nine members who are divided into three classes in staggered three-year terms.</p>\n<p>If the proposal is approved, however, the board will be divided into two classes with staggered two-year terms, with directors distributed as equally between the classes as possible, Tesla said in the filing.</p>\n<p>The board would be reduced to eight members, since Antonio Gracias, a venture capitalist who has served on the Tesla board since 2007, said in 2019 he’d not be seeking reelection when his term ends this year.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s board nominated current board members James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch, and Kimbal Musk, Chief Executive Elon Musk’s brother, for re-election as class II directors, with terms expiring in 2024. If the term reduction is approved, then their terms would end in 2023, the company said.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s curtailing board member terms was a response to a shareholder proposal calling to elect each board member for one year.</p>\n<p>The two-year term, however, “strikes a suitable balance to the long-term interests of and nearer-term accountability to our stockholders at this time,” Tesla said.</p>\n<p>Tesla shares were flat in after-hours trading after ending the regular trading day down 0.7%. Tesla’s board currently has nine members who are divided into three classes in staggered three-year terms.\nIf the proposal is approved, however, the board will be divided into two classes with staggered two-year terms, with directors distributed as equally between the classes as possible, Tesla said in the filing.\nThe board would be reduced to eight members, since Antonio Gracias, a venture capitalist who has served on the Tesla board since 2007, said in 2019 he’d not be seeking reelection when his term ends this year.\nTesla’s board nominated current board members James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch, and Kimbal Musk, Chief Executive Elon Musk’s brother, for re-election as class II directors, with terms expiring in 2024. If the term reduction is approved, then their terms would end in 2023, the company said.\nTesla’s curtailing board member terms was a response to a shareholder proposal calling to elect each board member for one year.\nThe two-year term, however, “strikes a suitable balance to the long-term interests of and nearer-term accountability to our stockholders at this time,” Tesla said.\nTesla shares were flat in after-hours trading after ending the regular trading day down 0.7%. Meanwhile, traders will also await more data on the U.S. economic recovery with the Labor Department's monthly jobs report later this week.</p>\n<p>The Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) November meeting will take place from Tuesday to Wednesday, with the policy statement and press conference from the meeting serving as the central bank's penultimate opportunity this year to announce formal plans to begin rolling back its crisis-era quantitative easing program. For the past year-and-a-half, the central bank has been purchasing $120 billion per month in agency mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> major tool to support the economy during the pandemic.</p>\n<p>In late September, the FOMC's latest monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/POWL\">Powell</a> suggested the central bank was apt to announce the start of tapering before year-end, and continue the tapering process until \"around the middle of next year.\"</p>\n<p>\"The upcoming FOMC meeting will be important for three reasons: 1) the announcement of tapering; 2) guidance around what tapering means for the path of hikes; and 3) nuanced changes in views around inflation risks given recent data,\" wrote <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a> economist Michelle Meyer in a note.</p>\n<p>\"The statement that announces the new pace of asset purchases will be followed by a note regarding flexibility stating that asset purchases are not on a pre-set course and will depend on the outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as an assessment of the efficacy of asset purchases,\" she predicted.</p>\n<p>She noted that Powell may also use the press conference to reiterate that the end of tapering would not necessarily indicate the start of rate hikes, and that both policy actions are distinct. In previous public remarks, Powell has already made a similar point in previous public remarks, saying, \"the timing and pace of the coming reduction in asset purchases will not be intended to carry a direct signal regarding the timing of interest rate liftoff.\"</p>\n<p>Given the market has been anticipating the start to tapering for months now, speculation around when the Fed will make a move on interest rates has become a point of particular interest to investors. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ISBC\">Investors</a> and economists have mulled whether the Fed may need to act more quickly than previously telegraphed on adjusting interest rates to stave off inflation, which has proven more long-lasting than some had suggested.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f0f0ae63a784eef5578397df02340483\" tg-width=\"4932\" tg-height=\"3288\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 24: Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell testifies during a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Capitol Hill on September 24, 2020 in Washington, DC. And earlier this month, Powell acknowledged in public remarks that the supply chain constraints and shortages that spurred the latest rise in prices are \"likely to last longer than previously expected, likely well into next year.\"</p>\n<p>While the central bank will not release an updated Summary of Economic Projections with their policy statement on Wednesday, the latest projections from the September meeting suggested the committee was split on rate hikes for 2022, with nine members seeing no rate hikes by the end of next year while the other nine members saw at least <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> hike.</p>\n<p>\"I think the Fed has pretty well determined to start the taper pretty quickly. We expect them to announce it next week and then start it soon thereafter, so that's pretty well carved in stone,\" Kathy Jones, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SCHW\">Charles Schwab</a> chief fixed income strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live last week. \"I think the big debate now is how quickly the Fed moves toward actually raising rates. The expectation in the market has really shifted to expecting as many as two rate hikes in 2022 and 2023 ... that’s a pretty aggressive pace of tightening.\"</p>\n<h2>October jobs report</h2>\n<p>One of this week's most closely watched pieces of economic data will be the October jobs report, which is due for release on Friday from the Labor Department.</p>\n<p>Economists are looking to see a pick-up in the pace of hiring for October after a disappointing print in September, when just 194,000 non-farm payrolls returned versus the half million expected. Over the past two months, payroll gains averaged at just 280,000. The unemployment rate is expected to take another small step toward pre-pandemic levels in October as well, with the jobless rate anticipated to dip to 4.7% from 4.8% the prior month.</p>\n<p>Still, the labor market has still fallen short its pre-pandemic conditions on a number of fronts. The unemployment rate has yet to return to its 50-year low of 3.5% from February 2020. For the past year-and-a-half, the central bank has been purchasing $120 billion per month in agency mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, as one major tool to support the economy during the pandemic.\nIn late September, the FOMC's latest monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggested the central bank was apt to announce the start of tapering before year-end, and continue the tapering process until \"around the middle of next year.\"\n\"The upcoming FOMC meeting will be important for three reasons: 1) the announcement of tapering; 2) guidance around what tapering means for the path of hikes; and 3) nuanced changes in views around inflation risks given recent data,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note.\n\"The statement that announces the new pace of asset purchases will be followed by a note regarding flexibility stating that asset purchases are not on a pre-set course and will depend on the outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as an assessment of the efficacy of asset purchases,\" she predicted.\nShe noted that Powell may also use the press conference to reiterate that the end of tapering would not necessarily indicate the start of rate hikes, and that both policy actions are distinct. But now the e-commerce giant could face a much larger campaign to unionize its US warehouse workers, launched by one of the biggest unions in the nation.</p>\n<p>The International Brotherhood of Teamsters voted Thursday in favor of a resolution to make \"building worker power at Amazon and helping those workers achieve a union contract\" a main priority, according to a copy of the resolution. Under the resolution, called the \"Amazon Project,\" Teamsters would fully fund the effort, which would include eventually creating a special Amazon Division to aid workers.</p>\n<p>Teamsters said that 1,562 delegates out of 1,632 representing more than 500 local unions voted in favor of the resolution.</p>\n<p>Amazon declined to comment on the matter.</p>\n<p>The effort comes on the heels of a landmark union push at Amazon's Bessemer, Alabama, facility in the midst of the pandemic, which ultimately prompted Amazon and its outgoing CEO, Jeff Bezos, to promise changes and concede more needs to be done to improve the work experience of its warehouse employees.</p>\n<p>The Teamsters, which represents 1.4 million US workers including UPS workers, said in the resolution that \"Amazon is changing the nature of work in our country and touches many core Teamster industries and employers such as UPS, parcel delivery, freight, airline, food distribution and motion picture, and presents an existential threat to the standards we have set in these industries.\"</p>\n<p>The union said it is not discussing its strategy at this time, but labor experts told CNN Business that the details thus far indicate a fundamentally different approach to the one Amazon fended off in Alabama, which was led by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). That effort sought to unionize workers at a single warehouse in Bessemer through a National Labor Relations Board election.</p>\n<p>The Teamsters' aim is to go after \"Amazon as an employer rather than trying to organize site-by-site and workplace-by-workplace, which was what the Bessemer organizing drive ended up being,\" said Rebecca Givan, an associate labor studies professor at Rutgers University, who noted that there's likely not a single path to success when it comes to the Teamsters' approach.</p>\n<p>\"[The Teamsters] can try a number of different paths and deploy a number of different strategies. Some of your competitors have more ambitious targets. Why are you a bit further back?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>In Europe we are already leading. Even in the US we have been in second place for the last months, and in China we are growing fast. We think we will become the market leader for EVs ... We don't want to pull back, for instance, from Latin America, where electric cars will probably not be the solution for climate change. In Latin America, the natural way forward is to use biofuels which are CO2 neutral, which is still combustion engine. That is why we don't say we will finish production of [internal combustion engine] cars so soon because we will need them in some parts of the world. Do you think it's going to get worse before it gets better? And do you think you'll have to reduce production or close plants?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>It has gotten worse already. We expected that we would have relief after the summer break, which didn't happen because in Malaysia, we had really quite significant problems with Covid. Some of our suppliers, the back ends of our suppliers are mostly based in Malaysia, and three plants were hit hard. We think that we will overcome this situation towards the end of the month, and then we should see relief. Semiconductors will be on short supply probably for several months.</p>\n<p><b>Now let's talk about autonomous technology. Because I know that while we are all transitioning towards electric that's something you're really passionate about. How will the adoption of autonomous technology go?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>We see a much bigger transition for the industry when cars are becoming autonomous, because cars will be used differently, used by more people. You can you can send your children or your grandparents in a car somewhere. Now imagine!</p>\n<p>There's a lot of of business potential and it's still a long way to go. Our first fleets probably will come to market in 2025, and the first private cars driving autonomously also in 2025 or 2026. But it's now time to invest, and to prepare. Autonomous is a different game because we think that robotaxis will play a major role, but also private cars are going to be shared ... we think there's a lot of potential for growth.</p>\n<p>The best starting point for such a mobility platform is definitely the rental car companies. They are profitable already today. And if you add to rental, sharing, short term leases, even the fleets of our loaner cars from our retail organization, you can imagine a huge mobility platform.</p>\n<p><b>Volkswagen is of course very competitive with Tesla. There have also been many parallels drawn between yourself and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, not least given your very active social media presence. Have you taken a leaf out of his playbook?</b></p>\n<p><b>Diess:</b>[Laughs] No, know I don't see any parallels. I highly regard what he's doing. I think he's a brilliant guy. And he really makes a difference. He's changing the world with his ventures.</p>\n<p>I really like that he is thinking very long into the future. He's thinking far. And he's brilliant guy. But we are quite different. He is very focused on Tesla, on his story. I'm running a big traditional company, which we try to prepare for the future. And I think we also require different characters. Because obviously, that's been a big problem for so many carmakers, yourself included. Do you think it's going to get worse before it gets better? And do you think you'll have to reduce production or close plants?\nDiess:It has gotten worse already. We expected that we would have relief after the summer break, which didn't happen because in Malaysia, we had really quite significant problems with Covid. Some of our suppliers, the back ends of our suppliers are mostly based in Malaysia, and three plants were hit hard. We think that we will overcome this situation towards the end of the month, and then we should see relief. Semiconductors will be on short supply probably for several months.\nNow let's talk about autonomous technology. Because I know that while we are all transitioning towards electric that's something you're really passionate about. How will the adoption of autonomous technology go?\nDiess:We see a much bigger transition for the industry when cars are becoming autonomous, because cars will be used differently, used by more people. You can you can send your children or your grandparents in a car somewhere. Now imagine!\nThere's a lot of of business potential and it's still a long way to go. Our first fleets probably will come to market in 2025, and the first private cars driving autonomously also in 2025 or 2026. But it's now time to invest, and to prepare. Tesla’s board currently has nine members who are divided into three classes in staggered three-year terms.</p>\n<p>If the proposal is approved, however, the board will be divided into two classes with staggered two-year terms, with directors distributed as equally between the classes as possible, Tesla said in the filing.</p>\n<p>The board would be reduced to eight members, since Antonio Gracias, a venture capitalist who has served on the Tesla board since 2007, said in 2019 he’d not be seeking reelection when his term ends this year.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s board nominated current board members James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch, and Kimbal Musk, Chief Executive Elon Musk’s brother, for re-election as class II directors, with terms expiring in 2024. If the term reduction is approved, then their terms would end in 2023, the company said.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s curtailing board member terms was a response to a shareholder proposal calling to elect each board member for one year.</p>\n<p>The two-year term, however, “strikes a suitable balance to the long-term interests of and nearer-term accountability to our stockholders at this time,” Tesla said.</p>\n<p>Tesla shares were flat in after-hours trading after ending the regular trading day down 0.7%.
