Demand for 5nm and 7nm processors had offset the loss of that mining business as the firm shipped chips for Apple's (AAPL) smartphones in time to appear in June's numbers. The expectation is that the firm stays on course for 20% sales growth for the fiscal year, and that June could be flat from May (which is a good thing).</p>\n<p>Early this (Friday) morning, news broke that Apple and Intel (INTC) will be the first customers to test TSM's 3nm production technology, which if all goes well, deploys toward the back half of 2022. Nikkei Asia reports that Intel is planning at least two projects to design CPUs for notebooks and data centers around the new 3nm chips.</p>\n<p>Just a quick tutorial. TSM's 5nm chips are the most advanced chips available and if you have an iPhone 12, you have one of these chips. TSM is indicating that the new 3nm chips will offer a 10% to 15% boost to computing performance compared to the current 5nm product, while also reducing power consumption by 25% to 30%.</p>\n<p>As an aside, Intel announced the delay of the Sapphire Rapids data center processor earlier this week. While this is seen around Wall Street as yet another chance for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) , and even Nvidia (NVDA) , to tackle even more market share away from the lumbering giant, but also makes at least this investor wonder just how Intel thinks they are going to get to a point anytime soon where they can compete with the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor as a global foundry to other chip designers.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street</b></p>\n<p>Of those few analysts that I mentioned who actually cover the name, only one reacted to this news. Susquehanna's five star (rated at TipRanks) analyst Mehdi Hosseini upgraded the name from \"Negative\" to \"Neutral\", while upping his target price from $85 to $105. The only other analyst with a recent target price is Jim Kelleher of Argus Research (also five stars). Since bottoming, TSM has retaken both the 21 day EMA and the 50 day SMA, using the former as support on weakness just yesterday.</p>\n<p><b>The Plan</b></p>\n<p>Regular followers well know that I have been hot for the semis for a good while now, in spite of, or rather because of the widely covered shortages that are creating significant pricing power.</p>\n<p>I am already long AMD, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) , both of whom have been solid investments. I am long Micron (MU) , which looked good until this week. I am long Nvidia which has simply been epic.</p>\n<p>I am also long semiconductor equipment names... Applied Materials (AMAT) , and Brooks Automation (BRKS) , two names that have been good, and meh, respectively. I probably have room for a large foundry that will probably make short work of Intel (my opinion) once Intel tries to move in on their business.</p>\n<p>I think TSM is ripe for entry, perhaps to the tune of 1/8 of intended position size. I would expect to add a second tranche of 1/8 at either a test of the 21 day EMA or a retaking of the $122 level, which is our pivot. Other changes are likely coming in the months ahead.</p>\n<p>Serving as Robin to Furlong's Batman, Mike Recupero was announced as the company's next CFO. Recupero begins at GameStop on July 21. Similar to many other new GameStop executive hires, Recupero was recruited from Amazon.</p>\n<p>Recupero had spent the last 17 years with Amazon, rising the ranks through the e-commerce giant's finance functions, per his LinkedIn profile. I still don't think it's worth anything even remotely close to that.\"\nIt will be interesting to see if other sell-side analysts follow Chukumba's lead on GameStop, refusing to relaunch coverage even as new management eventually lays out a turnaround plan. On paper, the resumés of GameStop's new leaders suggest there is a tiny shot of successfully evolving the company.\nMatt Furlong officially took over as GameStop's CEO on June 21.\nAccording to his LinkedIn profile, Furlong had spent eight years and eight months at tech beast Amazon. He joined in October 2012 from Procter & Gamble as a senior manager of vendor development. Furlong had spent the last two years leading Amazon's Australian business.\nSome 11 days into the job, Furlong sent GameStop's long-time communications person packing. Other changes are likely coming in the months ahead.\nServing as Robin to Furlong's Batman, Mike Recupero was announced as the company's next CFO. Recupero begins at GameStop on July 21. Similar to many other new GameStop executive hires, Recupero was recruited from Amazon.\nRecupero had spent the last 17 years with Amazon, rising the ranks through the e-commerce giant's finance functions, per his LinkedIn profile. Most recently, Recupero held the CFO position of Amazon's North America consumer business.\nThe latest Amazon defectors will join several others recruited by GameStop from the tenure of Jeff Bezos' CEO rule (which ends on Monday).\nOddly, GameStop's stock has plunged more than 20% over the past month as the new slate of leaders get installed into the company.\nSays Chukumba of the hires, \"The doctor's prescription doesn't match the disease. Impressive delivery rates for the month of June show that the market may underestimate NIO's growth potential.</p>\n<p><b>Shipping volumes are accelerating</b></p>\n<p>NIO guided for lower production volumes in the second quarter due to the global chip and battery supply shortage. The shortage was set to reduce NIO's factory output from 10,000 vehicles to 7,500 vehicles a month.</p>\n<p>The global semiconductor supply shortage has its roots in the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people started to work from home, a sharp increase in demand for semiconductors from the consumer electronics industry coincided with a faster than anticipated rebound in chip demand from the auto industry, leading to a global shortage in semiconductors that is throttling auto production from the US to China. NIO's guidance for lower factory output has lowered delivery expectations but a return to triple-digit growth rates may now push NIO's stock higher again.</p>\n<p>While the temporary production drop was a setback for NIO, it seems that the electric vehicle maker is ready to bounce back.NIO's June deliveries were nothing short of impressive and the market may underestimate NIO's ability to grow EV deliveries at triple digits this year. The Chinese EV maker delivered a total 8,083 vehicles in June, bringing the Q2'21 total to 21,896 EVs consisting of all models… NIO's 5-seater electric SUV ES6, the 5-seater electric coupe SUV EC6 and the 6-seater or 7-seater electric SUV ES8. NIO's monthly and quarterly delivery totals hit records in the second quarter and the EV maker is set to reach new records for the rest of the year. Total June deliveries saw 116% growth Y/Y with the largest growth coming from the ES6 model. The ES6 category saw 52% growth Y/Y. Total deliveries for Q2'21 were 21,896, most of which were ES6s, showing growth of 112% Y/Y… and that's despite production problems in the second quarter. Comparable figures for the EC6 are not available since deliveries for this model only began after the second quarter last year. What stands out from NIO's June delivery report is that shipping growth is speeding up compared to the previous month, which may be seen as a sign that NIO's delivery capabilities are undervalued. In May, NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles which is equivalent to a Y/Y growth rate of 95%. As soon as the chip shortage eases, which can be expected to be the case in the second half of the year, we should see a steady ramp up in NIO's factory output and deliveries. The speed of the ramp up will depend less on demand but rather on the severity of the supply shortage. The semiconductor shortage is a primary risk factor that will impact NIO's delivery success in the remaining two quarters.</p>\n<p>The market for electric vehicles is very resilient in China and demand for zero-emission passenger vehicles is not going away due to delays in production, which may be a sort of luxury problem for Chinese EV makers. XPeng sold 4,730 electric sport sedans and 1,835 compact SUVs last month, more than ever before. In Q2'21, XPeng delivered 17,398 deliveries, representing 439% growth Y/Y.</p>\n<p>XPeng's EV sales in China are also soaring showing strong demand and customer uptake of EV vehicles.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c8cd25b4fd64f193bc91dabbee99e54\" tg-width=\"925\" tg-height=\"445\"><span>(Source:InsideEVs)</span></p>\n<p><b>NIO FY 2021 delivery projections</b></p>\n<p>My estimates for Q3'21 and Q4'21 deliveries are shown in the graph below and assume a ramp up especially in NIO's ES6 delivery capability and a continual escalation to a quarterly output of 30,000 vehicles by year-end. A quarterly output volume of around 30,000 cars by year-end is realistic to achieve and NIO would still be operating 20% below full production capacity. Calculating the delivery totals for Q1 and Q2 together with my estimates for Q3 and Q4 results in a total delivery potential of 97,056 vehicles (across all three models) in FY 2021 and NIO may even be able to crack the 100,000 barrier if shipment volumes continue to accelerate at a strong rate in the last two quarters of the year. NIO delivered 43,728 vehicles in 2020 in total, so a 97,056 delivery estimate for 2021 implies 122% Y/Y growth. In the first six months of 2021, NIO already delivered 41,956 or 43% of my FY 2021 delivery estimate. NIO trades at a P-S ratio of 9.4 and the valuation multiplier factor is not that much different from other EV makers. Compared against Tesla (TSLA), which trades at a P-S ratio of 9.9, NIO has more revaluation potential because it operates in a larger market and has a lower revenue base.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f84e0cee1726c807b6b7d04f4f4e44f2\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>The chip supply shortage is still a major risk factor for NIO and it will have an impact on NIO's Q3 and Q4 production output... which will be below potential. While delivery growth rates are influenced by factors outside of NIO's operations, they also represent a big opportunity for NIO to surprise the market. As more people started to work from home, a sharp increase in demand for semiconductors from the consumer electronics industry coincided with a faster than anticipated rebound in chip demand from the auto industry, leading to a global shortage in semiconductors that is throttling auto production from the US to China. NIO's guidance for lower factory output has lowered delivery expectations but a return to triple-digit growth rates may now push NIO's stock higher again.\nWhile the temporary production drop was a setback for NIO, it seems that the electric vehicle maker is ready to bounce back.NIO's June deliveries were nothing short of impressive and the market may underestimate NIO's ability to grow EV deliveries at triple digits this year. The Chinese EV maker delivered a total 8,083 vehicles in June, bringing the Q2'21 total to 21,896 EVs consisting of all models… NIO's 5-seater electric SUV ES6, the 5-seater electric coupe SUV EC6 and the 6-seater or 7-seater electric SUV ES8. NIO's monthly and quarterly delivery totals hit records in the second quarter and the EV maker is set to reach new records for the rest of the year. Total June deliveries saw 116% growth Y/Y with the largest growth coming from the ES6 model. The ES6 category saw 52% growth Y/Y. Total deliveries for Q2'21 were 21,896, most of which were ES6s, showing growth of 112% Y/Y… and that's despite production problems in the second quarter. Similar to many other new GameStop executive hires, Recupero was recruited from Amazon.</p>\n<p>Recupero had spent the last 17 years with Amazon, rising the ranks through the e-commerce giant's finance functions, per his LinkedIn profile. Most recently, Recupero held the CFO position of Amazon's North America consumer business.</p>\n<p>The latest Amazon defectors will join several others recruited by GameStop from the tenure of Jeff Bezos' CEO rule (which ends on Monday).</p>\n<p>Oddly, GameStop's stock has plunged more than 20% over the past month as the new slate of leaders get installed into the company.</p>\n<p>Says Chukumba of the hires, \"The doctor's prescription doesn't match the disease. Amazon is a great e-commerce retailer, there is no question about that. But GameStop's primary problem is that more and more gamers are downloading video games. So you can have a much better website but it's really not going to make any difference. Impressive delivery rates for the month of June show that the market may underestimate NIO's growth potential.</p>\n<p><b>Shipping volumes are accelerating</b></p>\n<p>NIO guided for lower production volumes in the second quarter due to the global chip and battery supply shortage. The shortage was set to reduce NIO's factory output from 10,000 vehicles to 7,500 vehicles a month.</p>\n<p>The global semiconductor supply shortage has its roots in the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people started to work from home, a sharp increase in demand for semiconductors from the consumer electronics industry coincided with a faster than anticipated rebound in chip demand from the auto industry, leading to a global shortage in semiconductors that is throttling auto production from the US to China. NIO's guidance for lower factory output has lowered delivery expectations but a return to triple-digit growth rates may now push NIO's stock higher again.</p>\n<p>While the temporary production drop was a setback for NIO, it seems that the electric vehicle maker is ready to bounce back.NIO's June deliveries were nothing short of impressive and the market may underestimate NIO's ability to grow EV deliveries at triple digits this year. The Chinese EV maker delivered a total 8,083 vehicles in June, bringing the Q2'21 total to 21,896 EVs consisting of all models… NIO's 5-seater electric SUV ES6, the 5-seater electric coupe SUV EC6 and the 6-seater or 7-seater electric SUV ES8. NIO's monthly and quarterly delivery totals hit records in the second quarter and the EV maker is set to reach new records for the rest of the year. Total June deliveries saw 116% growth Y/Y with the largest growth coming from the ES6 model. The ES6 category saw 52% growth Y/Y. Total deliveries for Q2'21 were 21,896, most of which were ES6s, showing growth of 112% Y/Y… and that's despite production problems in the second quarter. Comparable figures for the EC6 are not available since deliveries for this model only began after the second quarter last year. What stands out from NIO's June delivery report is that shipping growth is speeding up compared to the previous month, which may be seen as a sign that NIO's delivery capabilities are undervalued. In May, NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles which is equivalent to a Y/Y growth rate of 95%. As soon as the chip shortage eases, which can be expected to be the case in the second half of the year, we should see a steady ramp up in NIO's factory output and deliveries. The speed of the ramp up will depend less on demand but rather on the severity of the supply shortage. The semiconductor shortage is a primary risk factor that will impact NIO's delivery success in the remaining two quarters.</p>\n<p>The market for electric vehicles is very resilient in China and demand for zero-emission passenger vehicles is not going away due to delays in production, which may be a sort of luxury problem for Chinese EV makers. XPeng sold 4,730 electric sport sedans and 1,835 compact SUVs last month, more than ever before. In Q2'21, XPeng delivered 17,398 deliveries, representing 439% growth Y/Y.</p>\n<p>XPeng's EV sales in China are also soaring showing strong demand and customer uptake of EV vehicles.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c8cd25b4fd64f193bc91dabbee99e54\" tg-width=\"925\" tg-height=\"445\"><span>(Source:InsideEVs)</span></p>\n<p><b>NIO FY 2021 delivery projections</b></p>\n<p>My estimates for Q3'21 and Q4'21 deliveries are shown in the graph below and assume a ramp up especially in NIO's ES6 delivery capability and a continual escalation to a quarterly output of 30,000 vehicles by year-end. A quarterly output volume of around 30,000 cars by year-end is realistic to achieve and NIO would still be operating 20% below full production capacity. Calculating the delivery totals for Q1 and Q2 together with my estimates for Q3 and Q4 results in a total delivery potential of 97,056 vehicles (across all three models) in FY 2021 and NIO may even be able to crack the 100,000 barrier if shipment volumes continue to accelerate at a strong rate in the last two quarters of the year. NIO delivered 43,728 vehicles in 2020 in total, so a 97,056 delivery estimate for 2021 implies 122% Y/Y growth. In the first six months of 2021, NIO already delivered 41,956 or 43% of my FY 2021 delivery estimate. NIO trades at a P-S ratio of 9.4 and the valuation multiplier factor is not that much different from other EV makers. Compared against Tesla (TSLA), which trades at a P-S ratio of 9.9, NIO has more revaluation potential because it operates in a larger market and has a lower revenue base.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f84e0cee1726c807b6b7d04f4f4e44f2\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>The chip supply shortage is still a major risk factor for NIO and it will have an impact on NIO's Q3 and Q4 production output... which will be below potential. As conditions normalize slowly in the second half, NIO should be able to ramp up factory output and deliveries. While delivery growth rates are influenced by factors outside of NIO's operations, they also represent a big opportunity for NIO to surprise the market. Better than expected growth rates and a fast return to full production could create fertile ground for stock price appreciation.</p>\n<p><b>Final thoughts</b></p>\n<p>NIO may be growing faster than expected in 2021 as the chip supply shortage eases and a strong rebound in the second half of the year could push NIO to hit the critical 100,000 annual delivery milestone. I can only find four analysts that have gone as far as to make quarterly projections, six that have made annual projections, and just two that have really stuck their necks out and stated a price target at any point in the past six months.</p>\n<p>The range of EPS expectations for Q2 EPS for TSM, across those four analysts is just $0.91 to $0.95. Wall Street is looking for approximately $13.2 billion in revenue generation for the quarter, which would be year over year sales growth of about 27%. This would be an acceleration in sales growth for a second consecutive quarter.</p>\n<p><b>This Week</b></p>\n<p>It was Tuesday. DigiTimes reports that Taiwan Semiconductor is expected to record record revenues for June, due to shipments of iPhones showing up in the data. Apparently, reduced purchases by client Bitmain, as China bans Bitcoin mining had not taken the toll on TSM sales as some had expected. Demand for 5nm and 7nm processors had offset the loss of that mining business as the firm shipped chips for Apple's (AAPL) smartphones in time to appear in June's numbers. The expectation is that the firm stays on course for 20% sales growth for the fiscal year, and that June could be flat from May (which is a good thing).</p>\n<p>Early this (Friday) morning, news broke that Apple and Intel (INTC) will be the first customers to test TSM's 3nm production technology, which if all goes well, deploys toward the back half of 2022. Nikkei Asia reports that Intel is planning at least two projects to design CPUs for notebooks and data centers around the new 3nm chips.</p>\n<p>Just a quick tutorial. TSM's 5nm chips are the most advanced chips available and if you have an iPhone 12, you have one of these chips. TSM is indicating that the new 3nm chips will offer a 10% to 15% boost to computing performance compared to the current 5nm product, while also reducing power consumption by 25% to 30%.</p>\n<p>As an aside, Intel announced the delay of the Sapphire Rapids data center processor earlier this week. While this is seen around Wall Street as yet another chance for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) , and even Nvidia (NVDA) , to tackle even more market share away from the lumbering giant, but also makes at least this investor wonder just how Intel thinks they are going to get to a point anytime soon where they can compete with the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor as a global foundry to other chip designers.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street</b></p>\n<p>Of those few analysts that I mentioned who actually cover the name, only one reacted to this news. Susquehanna's five star (rated at TipRanks) analyst Mehdi Hosseini upgraded the name from \"Negative\" to \"Neutral\", while upping his target price from $85 to $105. The only other analyst with a recent target price is Jim Kelleher of Argus Research (also five stars). Kelleher initiated the name a week earlier as a \"Buy\" with a $150 target.</p>\n<p><b>The Chart</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/19c41db815e4b2cbbc0f31979123e544\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"530\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Readers will see that in late April, these shares managed to turn a descending triangle (which is a bearish pattern) into a flat basing pattern without ever allowing the triangle to close. Since bottoming, TSM has retaken both the 21 day EMA and the 50 day SMA, using the former as support on weakness just yesterday.</p>\n<p><b>The Plan</b></p>\n<p>Regular followers well know that I have been hot for the semis for a good while now, in spite of, or rather because of the widely covered shortages that are creating significant pricing power.</p>\n<p>I am already long AMD, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) , both of whom have been solid investments. I am long Micron (MU) , which looked good until this week. I am long Nvidia which has simply been epic.</p>\n<p>I am also long semiconductor equipment names... Applied Materials (AMAT) , and Brooks Automation (BRKS) , two names that have been good, and meh, respectively. I probably have room for a large foundry that will probably make short work of Intel (my opinion) once Intel tries to move in on their business.</p>\n<p>I think TSM is ripe for entry, perhaps to the tune of 1/8 of intended position size. I would expect to add a second tranche of 1/8 at either a test of the 21 day EMA or a retaking of the $122 level, which is our pivot. Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) . Taiwan Semiconductor reports Q2 financial performance in two weeks, on July 16th. Currently, Wall Street is looking for EPS of $0.93, without much divergence in opinion. This name is not as highly followed across the community of analysts. I can only find four analysts that have gone as far as to make quarterly projections, six that have made annual projections, and just two that have really stuck their necks out and stated a price target at any point in the past six months.\nThe range of EPS expectations for Q2 EPS for TSM, across those four analysts is just $0.91 to $0.95. Wall Street is looking for approximately $13.2 billion in revenue generation for the quarter, which would be year over year sales growth of about 27%. This would be an acceleration in sales growth for a second consecutive quarter.\nThis Week\nIt was Tuesday. DigiTimes reports that Taiwan Semiconductor is expected to record record revenues for June, due to shipments of iPhones showing up in the data. Apparently, reduced purchases by client Bitmain, as China bans Bitcoin mining had not taken the toll on TSM sales as some had expected. Demand for 5nm and 7nm processors had offset the loss of that mining business as the firm shipped chips for Apple's (AAPL) smartphones in time to appear in June's numbers. The expectation is that the firm stays on course for 20% sales growth for the fiscal year, and that June could be flat from May (which is a good thing).\nEarly this (Friday) morning, news broke that Apple and Intel (INTC) will be the first customers to test TSM's 3nm production technology, which if all goes well, deploys toward the back half of 2022. Nikkei Asia reports that Intel is planning at least two projects to design CPUs for notebooks and data centers around the new 3nm chips.\nJust a quick tutorial. TSM's 5nm chips are the most advanced chips available and if you have an iPhone 12, you have one of these chips. TSM is indicating that the new 3nm chips will offer a 10% to 15% boost to computing performance compared to the current 5nm product, while also reducing power consumption by 25% to 30%.\nAs an aside, Intel announced the delay of the Sapphire Rapids data center processor earlier this week. While this is seen around Wall Street as yet another chance for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) , and even Nvidia (NVDA) , to tackle even more market share away from the lumbering giant, but also makes at least this investor wonder just how Intel thinks they are going to get to a point anytime soon where they can compete with the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor as a global foundry to other chip designers.\nWall Street\nOf those few analysts that I mentioned who actually cover the name, only one reacted to this news. Susquehanna's five star (rated at TipRanks) analyst Mehdi Hosseini upgraded the name from \"Negative\" to \"Neutral\", while upping his target price from $85 to $105. The only other analyst with a recent target price is Jim Kelleher of Argus Research (also five stars). Kelleher initiated the name a week earlier as a \"Buy\" with a $150 target.\nThe Chart\n\nReaders will see that in late April, these shares managed to turn a descending triangle (which is a bearish pattern) into a flat basing pattern without ever allowing the triangle to close. Since bottoming, TSM has retaken both the 21 day EMA and the 50 day SMA, using the former as support on weakness just yesterday.\nThe Plan\nRegular followers well know that I have been hot for the semis for a good while now, in spite of, or rather because of the widely covered shortages that are creating significant pricing power.\nI am already long AMD, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) , both of whom have been solid investments. I am long Micron (MU) , which looked good until this week. I am long Nvidia which has simply been epic.\nI am also long semiconductor equipment names... Applied Materials (AMAT) , and Brooks Automation (BRKS) , two names that have been good, and meh, respectively. I probably have room for a large foundry that will probably make short work of Intel (my opinion) once Intel tries to move in on their business.\nI think TSM is ripe for entry, perhaps to the tune of 1/8 of intended position size. I would expect to add a second tranche of 1/8 at either a test of the 21 day EMA or a retaking of the $122 level, which is our pivot.
