Can shares reclaim the milestone soon and head higher in 2022?

Recently, Apple stock flirted with $3 trillion in market cap, but quickly dipped below $2.9 trillion — as the broad market reacted to monetary tightening that should now happen more rapidly than previously expected.

Can shares of the Cupertino company finally find its way north in 2022 and meet the expectations of so many bulls on Wall Street? Or will bearishness take over during a year of rising interest rates and lingering inflation?

Figure 1: Apple Park in Cupertino, CA.

AAPL: the bull case

As Apple stock climbed viciously between late November and early December, many Wall Street experts piled on in support of “AAPL $3T”. Wedbush’s Dan Ives, for example, has been talking about the market cap milestone since our conversation in Q3 of last year, at least.

But other analysts have also hopped on the bullish bandwagon recently. Morgan Stanley upped its price target to $200 per share in November, while the JPMorgan research team saw Apple stock heading to $3.5 trillion in market cap over the next 12 months.

One of the most vocal optimists came from the buy side. Loup’s Gene Munster thought that his previous price target had quickly become stale, and that $250 per share now seemed more reasonable. In his opinion, the multi-year opportunity in the metaverse will gain investor appreciation in the new year, which should reignite momentum that the stock had lost in the last few weeks of 2021.

AAPL: the bear case

Despite the upbeat expectations described above, mostly supported by company-specific factors, the market rolled into 2022 with its guard up. The boogieman of the moment seems to be the Federal Reserve’s anticipated reaction to near-full employment and sticky inflation, which should lead to higher interest rates in the next several months.

I have recently explained how tighter money supply can spell trouble for stocks that trade for relatively high multiples. While AAPL is no Tesla or Rivian, the stock’s forward P/E of nearly 30 times and only modest earnings growth expectations could be a drag for share price in 2022, as investors look for better deals in value and cyclical stocks.

The Apple Maven’s take

I continue to think that Apple is a great stock to buy and hold for the long term. Under the leadership of a CEO (and former COO) that is driven by operational excellence, the company seems to be in very good hands. Better yet, demand for Apple’s products and services, as well as consumer appreciation for the brand, seem to be at or near an all-time high.

That said, the setup for the first few weeks or months of 2022 looks challenging to me. Apple stock climbed relentlessly in 2020, and then again last year. Aided by a spike in pandemic-driven demand for tech devices and lavish liquidity in the system, AAPL recorded one of its best three years of returns ever between 2019 and 2021.

As much as the metaverse and autonomous vehicles can and likely will support the company’s financial results over the next many years, I think that AAPL stock is overdue for a breather. While shares will likely climb back above $3 trillion and head much higher from there eventually, I am not so confident that this rally will happen in the immediate future.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can Apple Stock Reclaim $3 Trillion And Thrive In 2022?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCan Apple Stock Reclaim $3 Trillion And Thrive In 2022?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-09 12:31 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
A market cap of $3 trillion has, so far, proven to be a ceiling that Apple stock does not seem ready to break through yet. Declines in shares of banks JPMorgan Chase & Co and Goldman Sachs Group weighed on the blue-chip index.\nFinancials dropped 1.3%, most among S&P 500 sectors, as U.S. Treasury yields fell, with the market unwinding expectations of quicker Fed rate hikes a day after the central bank signaled it was in no hurry to do so.\n“The growth side of the market is seeing more positive results today as they are benefiting from the falling yields that are developing,” said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at John Hancock Investment Management.\n“The market had been positioning for higher yields in general given the Fed announcement of tapering. As we walked in today, there has been a reversal in that.”\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 33.35 points, or 0.09%, to 36,124.23, the S&P 500 gained 19.49 points, or 0.42%, to 4,680.06 and the Nasdaq Composite added 128.72 points, or 0.81%, to 15,940.31.\nThe S&P 500 growth index rose 1.2% while the S&P 500 value index fell 0.5%.\nAmong S&P 500 sectors, tech and consumer discretionary led the way, both rising about 1.5%.\nQualcomm shares jumped 12.7% as the company forecast better-than-expected profits and revenue for its current quarter on soaring demand for chips used in phones, cars and other internet-connected devices.\nThe Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index climbed 3.5%, with Nvidia soaring 12%.\nBetter-than-expected third-quarter earnings have helped lift sentiment for equities. With about 420 companies having reported, S&P 500 earnings are expected to have climbed 41.2% in the third quarter from a year earlier, according to Refinitiv IBES.\n“The corporate earnings story remains quite bright,” said Craig Fehr, investment strategist at Edward Jones.\n“The market is rewarding companies that are beating and upping their outlook, and the market is punishing companies that are missing their estimates in the quarter and more importantly, perhaps, signaling a more sour outlook.”\nModerna shares tumbled about 18% as the company slashed the 2021 sales forecast for its COVID-19 vaccine by as much as $5 billion, grappling to fill vials and distribute them to meet unprecedented world demand. Moderna shares weighed on the S&P 500 healthcare sector, which fell 0.8%.\nData showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell to the lowest level in nearly 20 months last week, suggesting the economy was regaining momentum. Investors will get a critical view of the economy with the monthly jobs report on Friday.\nDeclining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.12-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.24-to-1 ratio favored decliners.\nThe S&P 500 posted 75 new 52-week highs and five new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 224 new highs and 38 new lows.\nAbout 11.3 billion shares changed hands in U.S. exchanges, above the 10.4 billion daily average over the last 20 sessions.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"161125":0.9,"513500":0.9,".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"ESmain":0.9,"IVV":0.9,"OEF":0.9,"OEX":0.9,"SDS":0.9,"SH":0.9,"SPXU":0.9,"SSO":0.9,"UPRO":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":464,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":849221293,"gmtCreate":1635759959157,"gmtModify":1635759959359,"author":{"id":"3586645063655275","authorId":"3586645063655275","name":"karen521818","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7d25d8609ba5fe3b8c704da13a47225e","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586645063655275","authorIdStr":"3586645063655275"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"like","listText":"like","text":"like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":4,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/849221293","repostId":"2179250221","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2179250221","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1635721559,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2179250221?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-11-01 07:05","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Federal Reserve decision, October jobs report: What to know this week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2179250221","media":"Yahoo Finance","summary":"The Federal Reserve's forthcoming monetary policy meeting will be in focus this week, and may set th","content":"
\n
The Federal Reserve's forthcoming monetary policy meeting will be in focus this week, and may set the stage for a long-awaited announcement of asset-purchase tapering. Meanwhile, traders will also await more data on the U.S. economic recovery with the Labor Department's monthly jobs report later this week.\nThe Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) November meeting will take place from Tuesday to Wednesday, with the policy statement and press conference from the meeting serving as the central bank's penultimate opportunity this year to announce formal plans to begin rolling back its crisis-era quantitative easing program. For the past year-and-a-half, the central bank has been purchasing $120 billion per month in agency mortgage-backed securities and Treasuries, as one major tool to support the economy during the pandemic.\nIn late September, the FOMC's latest monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggested the central bank was apt to announce the start of tapering before year-end, and continue the tapering process until \"around the middle of next year.\"\n\"The upcoming FOMC meeting will be important for three reasons: 1) the announcement of tapering; 2) guidance around what tapering means for the path of hikes; and 3) nuanced changes in views around inflation risks given recent data,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note.\n\"The statement that announces the new pace of asset purchases will be followed by a note regarding flexibility stating that asset purchases are not on a pre-set course and will depend on the outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as an assessment of the efficacy of asset purchases,\" she predicted.\nShe noted that Powell may also use the press conference to reiterate that the end of tapering would not necessarily indicate the start of rate hikes, and that both policy actions are distinct. In previous public remarks, Powell has already made a similar point in previous public remarks, saying, \"the timing and pace of the coming reduction in asset purchases will not be intended to carry a direct signal regarding the timing of interest rate liftoff.\"\nGiven the market has been anticipating the start to tapering for months now, speculation around when the Fed will make a move on interest rates has become a point of particular interest to investors. Investors and economists have mulled whether the Fed may need to act more quickly than previously telegraphed on adjusting interest rates to stave off inflation, which has proven more long-lasting than some had suggested.\nWASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 24: Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell testifies during a Senate Banking Committee hearing on Capitol Hill on September 24, 2020 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Drew Angerer/Getty Images)Drew Angerer via Getty Images\nIn September, core personal consumption expenditures — the Fed's preferred gauge of underlying inflation — rose 3.6% over last year for a fourth consecutive month, coming in at the fastest clip since 1991. And earlier this month, Powell acknowledged in public remarks that the supply chain constraints and shortages that spurred the latest rise in prices are \"likely to last longer than previously expected, likely well into next year.\"\nWhile the central bank will not release an updated Summary of Economic Projections with their policy statement on Wednesday, the latest projections from the September meeting suggested the committee was split on rate hikes for 2022, with nine members seeing no rate hikes by the end of next year while the other nine members saw at least one hike.\n\"I think the Fed has pretty well determined to start the taper pretty quickly. We expect them to announce it next week and then start it soon thereafter, so that's pretty well carved in stone,\" Kathy Jones, Charles Schwab chief fixed income strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live last week. \"I think the big debate now is how quickly the Fed moves toward actually raising rates. The expectation in the market has really shifted to expecting as many as two rate hikes in 2022 and 2023 ... that’s a pretty aggressive pace of tightening.\"\nOctober jobs report\nOne of this week's most closely watched pieces of economic data will be the October jobs report, which is due for release on Friday from the Labor Department.\nEconomists are looking to see a pick-up in the pace of hiring for October after a disappointing print in September, when just 194,000 non-farm payrolls returned versus the half million expected. Over the past two months, payroll gains averaged at just 280,000. The unemployment rate is expected to take another small step toward pre-pandemic levels in October as well, with the jobless rate anticipated to dip to 4.7% from 4.8% the prior month.\nStill, the labor market has still fallen short its pre-pandemic conditions on a number of fronts. The unemployment rate has yet to return to its 50-year low of 3.5% from February 2020. And as of September, the civilian labor force was still down by about 3.1 million individuals from pre-virus levels.\nOne factor weighing on the labor market in August and September was the Delta variant, which may have deterred some workers from seeking employment in person for risk of infection. And an ongoing element dragging on the labor market's recovery has been a mismatch of supply and demand, with employers struggling to fill a near-record number of job openings while voluntary quits jumped to a historically high level.\n\"Next week’s October payrolls report will shed light on whether supply eased on diminishing constraints or if the labor market continues to face headwinds for now,\" wrote Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist for High Frequency Economics, in a note last week.\nBut some data from the past couple weeks has reflected favorably on conditions in the labor market in October. Weekly new unemployment claims broke below 300,000 for the first time since the start of the pandemic during the survey week for the October jobs report, or the week that includes the 12th of the month. And in the Conference Board's October Consumer Confidence Index, just 10.6% of consumers said jobs were \"hard to get,\" down from 13.0% in September. That brought the Conference Board's closely watched labor market differential, or percentage of consumers saying jobs are \"hard to get\" subtracted from the percentage saying jobs \"are plentiful,\" to 45, or its highest level since 2000.\nEconomic calendar\n\nMonday: Markit U.S. Manufacturing PMI, Oct. final (59.3 expected, 59.2 in September); Constructing spending, month-over-month, September (0.4% expected, 0.0% in August); ISM Manufacturing Index, Oct. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.9%. All three finished near their lows of the day.
\n
Fed governors have been dropping hints in recent weeks that the beginning of the end of the central bank’s bond buying was nearing, and the minutes confirmed that taperingis at hand. “Most participants noted that …it could be appropriate to start reducing the pace of asset purchases this year,” the minutes read.
\n
The assessment comes as the economy has recovered quickly, and reflects that the Fed is now focused on when—and how quickly—to remove support from the economy.
\n
The selloff was broad. About 83% of S&P 500 stocks fell on the day, according to FactSet. This dynamics often reflects concern about how the market will perform without the Fed there to support it.
\n
Now, it’s just a question of when tapering will begin. It’ “is going to be September or December,” said Dave Wagner, portfolio manager and analyst at Aptus Capital Advisors. “Everyone is focusing on Jackson Hole in my opinion,” he continued, referring to the conclave of central bankers that occurs later this month in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
\n
Strangely, the bond market didn’t react all that much, with the 10-year Treasury yield closing at 1.27%, where it hovered for most of the day. The 2-year yield, which often moves higher when market participants see the Fed hiking short-term interest rates sooner, ended at 0.21%, lower than the 0.22% it hit in the morning.
\n
“I don’t think we’ve learned anything new,” said Tom Graff, head of fixed income at Brown Advisory. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.9%. All three finished near their lows of the day.\nFed governors have been dropping hints in recent weeks that the beginning of the end of the central bank’s bond buying was nearing, and the minutes confirmed that taperingis at hand. “Most participants noted that …it could be appropriate to start reducing the pace of asset purchases this year,” the minutes read.\nThe assessment comes as the economy has recovered quickly, and reflects that the Fed is now focused on when—and how quickly—to remove support from the economy.\nThe selloff was broad. About 83% of S&P 500 stocks fell on the day, according to FactSet. This dynamics often reflects concern about how the market will perform without the Fed there to support it.\nNow, it’s just a question of when tapering will begin. It’ “is going to be September or December,” said Dave Wagner, portfolio manager and analyst at Aptus Capital Advisors. “Everyone is focusing on Jackson Hole in my opinion,” he continued, referring to the conclave of central bankers that occurs later this month in Jackson Hole, Wyo.\nStrangely, the bond market didn’t react all that much, with the 10-year Treasury yield closing at 1.27%, where it hovered for most of the day. The 2-year yield, which often moves higher when market participants see the Fed hiking short-term interest rates sooner, ended at 0.21%, lower than the 0.22% it hit in the morning.\n“I don’t think we’ve learned anything new,” said Tom Graff, head of fixed income at Brown Advisory. Graff added that the consensus for a short-term interest rate hikes in 2022 or 2023 hasn’t changed.\nA weak market, however, couldn’t keep some stocks down. It became the fastest S&P 500 bull market since World War II to double off of previous lows, breaking the previous record by a wide margin.The S&P 500 also has a seven-month winning streak in 2021, a rare occurrence in the market and a bullish indicator for the next 12 months.A number of S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average milestones came and went in 2021, including a record six new Dow 1,000-point milestones in one year.In fact, 2021 joined 2014 as the only year since 1928 in which the S&P 500 made new record highs in all 12 months of the year.Heading into 2022, some investors are concerned that Federal Reserve interest rate hikes could stall the bull market. However, history suggests stocks actually perform relatively well in the first 12 months following the beginning of a Fed rate hike cycle.Finally, just because the market had a big year in 2021 doesn’t mean the upside is limited in 2022. In fact, the S&P 500 has historically traded higher in years following at least 20% gains.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2054,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":696899769,"gmtCreate":1640657864983,"gmtModify":1640657865314,"author":{"id":"3586645063655275","authorId":"3586645063655275","name":"karen521818","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7d25d8609ba5fe3b8c704da13a47225e","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586645063655275","authorIdStr":"3586645063655275"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"like","listText":"like","text":"like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/696899769","repostId":"1127544468","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":699,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":874055818,"gmtCreate":1637714695719,"gmtModify":1637714695853,"author":{"id":"3586645063655275","authorId":"3586645063655275","name":"karen521818","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7d25d8609ba5fe3b8c704da13a47225e","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586645063655275","authorIdStr":"3586645063655275"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"like","listText":"like","text":"like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/874055818","repostId":"2185336565","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":180,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":872019685,"gmtCreate":1637374051971,"gmtModify":1637374052465,"author":{"id":"3586645063655275","authorId":"3586645063655275","name":"karen521818","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7d25d8609ba5fe3b8c704da13a47225e","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586645063655275","authorIdStr":"3586645063655275"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"like","listText":"like","text":"like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/872019685","repostId":"2184842262","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":391,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
