Some value-focused investors might object because the company’s stock is trading at a seemingly high multiple.\nYet, let’s try to avoid knee-jerk reactions. TSLA stock might appear to be expensive at first glance, but deeper research may reveal that a high-growth business justifies a rich valuation.\nAt the end of the day, the data should decide what’s reasonable and what’s not. And in Tesla’s case, the numbers should convince even the staunchest skeptics that this automaker’s moving vehicles at a fast pace.\nTSLA Stock at a Glance\nThe Tesla bear camp was out in full force, as you might recall, back in 2020. At that time, the TSLA stock price was moving up quickly, and the company enacted a 5-for-1share split on Aug. 31 of that year.\nAs it turned out, neither the stock split nor the protests of the bears could slow down the bull market. If anything, it just accelerated into 2021.\nJanuary was a particularly heady month, as TSLA stock slammed into resistance at almost exactly $900. The buyers tried to push the stock above $900 again in February, but to no avail.\nAdmittedly, traders who chased the stock at that level were punished in 2021. The Tesla share price chopped and flopped around during the summer and into the fall, landing at $780 in early October.\nSo, here’s the kicker. Tesla’s trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio is 411.49x. This, no doubt, will frustrate some value investors.\nA New Paradigm\nOn the other hand, Tesla’s P/E ratio has been in the triple digits for quite a while now.\nToday’s investors must be able to adapt to a new paradigm: a stock is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it, and Wall Street will continue to reward a high-growth company for as long as it wants to.\nThe best advice for angry value investors is: don’t try to resist the reality of today’s marketplace. It’s not a battle you’re likely to win.\nBesides, Tesla’s delivery data is clearly on the right track.\nFor the third quarter of 2021, Tesla delivered 241,300 electric vehicles. That figure topped the analyst consensus estimate of 232,000.\nFurthermore, Tesla’s quarterly shipments grew 20% compared to the prior quarter, and an eye-popping 73% from the year-ago quarter.\nContinuing to Dominate\nWedbush analyst Dan Ives reacted to these figures with an insightful comment about Tesla’s ability to thrive despite the company’s challenges.\n“While there are many competitors in the EV space, Tesla continues to dominate market share as evidenced again this quarter while battling through the chip shortage and now is seeing rebounding China demand after facing headwinds earlier this year,” Ives explained.\nIndeed, the global semiconductor shortage hindered many automakers’ production lines. Yet, despite this, Tesla’s second-quarter revenues nearly doubled to $11.96 billion. Moreover, Tesla’s quarterly revenue result beat Wall Street’s estimate of $11.53 billion.\nFor the full year of 2021, Tesla has guided for more than 750,000 vehicle deliveries. That’s ambitious, but at the current rate, the company should be able to exceed its expectations. So, the naysayers don’t have much data on which to base their bear thesis now.\nFor Tesla’s investors, the future is looking as bright as ever.\nAs Ives put it, Tesla’s recent results speak to “an electric vehicle demand trajectory that looks quite robust for Tesla heading into the fourth quarter and 2022.”\nThe Takeaway\nTesla’s price-to-earnings ratio might be a hard pill for some investors to swallow. Yet, investing isn’t always about bottom-fishing for rock-bottom valuations.\nIt can also be about high-growth businesses that beat expectations. In Tesla’s case, the company is undeniably delivering plenty of vehicles — and positive surprises for the I’m asking this question as a married and retired person.\nAlready Retired Annie\nAnnie,\nYour question is a common one from people of all ages. Even with interest rates low, safety accounts – I don’t like to call them emergency funds — are essential. Whether married, single or partnered in any way, you need a fallback to cover basic needs. \nWhat that amount should be is personal and is based on your spending and responsibilities. The basic rule of thumb is three times basic living expenses, but if you own a home, make it closer to six months. This money should be kept in an account separate from your everyday funds and any savings for your next car, big trip or celebration. Savings is separate from whatever mix of stocks, bonds and cash you have in your investment accounts.\nIf you are retired, you stillneed a safety account. Even if you have a steady monthly retirement income or withdrawal strategy for your 401(k) account, there may be financial surprises: think a new furnace or air conditioner, storm damage, condo assessments, car repairs, medical and dental bills.\nIncome from the stock market is not guaranteed. Ask retirees who saw the value of their investments fall in the dot-com crash of 2000 or in the 2008 financial crisis or in March 2020. Perhaps they even sold in fear, leaving their net worth permanently reduced when prices recovered. Once retired, replenishing those assets is difficult. Having cash buys you time and clearer thinking, and it lets you keep your long-term investing strategy in place.\nLiquid assets are assets you can access quickly and predictably. That is why we start with cash, whether in a savings account, a money-market fund, or a certificate of deposit. Check if the account is insured by the FDIC (money-market accounts are not.) Don’t be swayed by better interest rates, as they are only one part of the story.\nOf course you can sell other assets — from your home to car to jewelry, even stocks and bonds — for cash, turning them liquid. But the dollar value isn’t predictable. Nor in some cases is the time involved. And don’t forget the added cost of capital-gains taxes on investments and, in some cases, your home.\nNo matter when you need it, cash holds the same price; investments do not.\nA home equity line of credit, or HELOC, is not a safety account, despite what some claim. That is a backup option that may be good to have, but once tapped, it is a loan that must be paid back with interest. No matter how tempting the option, you are taking a risk. Paying off debt is not easy in retirement, even more so when faced with inflation. And locking yourself into more debt when you are no longer working creates stress.\nWithdrawing money from an investment account – whether a 403(b), 401(k) or IRA – is smart with a plan. But without one, the implications create financial havoc. A retired woman was building her dream home and ran over budget. She withdrew $10,000 from her IRA to make the final payment to the contractor and to get built-ins she wanted in a closet. However, she was only 59. She had to pay a 10% penalty for early withdrawal — $1,000 — on top of the income tax due (withdrawal from traditional retirement accounts are taxed as ordinary income). Deciding and acting on the fly cost her extra money.\nAdding an additional monthly payment, paying a penalty for an early withdrawal or selling assets in a rush may not create a problem today, but retirement lasts many years, hopefully decades. The market has gone up almost in a straight line since November despite a troubling list of events that could each have justified at least a 5% correction. Investors are incredibly resilient.\nSome things that didn’t matter:a burst bubble in clean-energy stocks;a sharp rise in Treasury yields(to March);a big fall in Treasury yields(since March); China’s crackdown on moneymaking; the Federal Reserve’sshift toward tapering bond purchases; and the rise of the Delta variant.\nOn the optimistic side, it is great that the market has been pushed up by a variety of forces, not by wild excess in a single area. We need not worry that the bubble in clean energy will burst and bring down the market, because it has already burst without bringing down the market.\nThroughout all this, the stock market has risen steadily,without a 5% fall since shortly before the election last year. Every time part of the market—technology stocks, cheap stocks, smaller stocks, oil stocks, strong-balance-sheet stocks—stops performing, something else steps in to rescue the broader index. The market seems invulnerable to bad news, and that is unusual. On the face of it, it is also scary, suggesting investors are complacent about danger.\nIt is far from unprecedented to go a long time without a correction, with 10 episodes since 1963 when the market lasted more than 200 trading days without a 5% drop. But they were different from the recent run. In every other case, the market was far calmer below the surface. This time, major events led to big swings between sectors, size and types of stock, but none disturbed its steady rise.\nSimilarly, the stimulus- and vaccine-driven willingness to take risk across every asset class faded from March onward, so we shouldn’t be too concerned about a switch in investor sentiment. Again, it has already happened.\nYet,I find it disconcerting that the market seems to go up no matter what. Good news on the economy pushes up stocks sensitive to growth, such as manufacturers and banks. Troubling news on the economy means lower bond yields and so pushes up stocks with profits far in the future (see: Big Tech) whose expansion depends on innovation rather than economic growth, which I understand. That both should push up the wider S&P 500 is what puzzles me.\nThe only explanation I have is the old one: “TINA”—There Is No Alternative to Stocks—because yields on alternatives such as bonds are so low. With more savings going into stocks than is cashed out or soaked up by IPOs, the price has to rise. It isn’t a satisfactory story, but it kind of works.\nIn both good and bad times investors want to buy stocks, so the S&P goes up. Butwhichstocks they choose to buy differs between good and bad times. In good times they want risk-on stocks (cheap value, cyclicals, smaller companies, emerging markets). In bad times they want risk-off stocks (growth, defensive firms, larger companies, developed markets and especially the U.S.).\nThe problem with TINA is that the justification for stocks isn’t that they offer good returns in the future, but that they offer better returns than bonds. Bonds offer miserable returns—a guaranteed loss after inflation for 30 years on Treasury inflation-protected securities—so doing better than that isn’t saying much. Some value-focused investors might object because the company’s stock is trading at a seemingly high multiple.\nYet, let’s try to avoid knee-jerk reactions. TSLA stock might appear to be expensive at first glance, but deeper research may reveal that a high-growth business justifies a rich valuation.\nAt the end of the day, the data should decide what’s reasonable and what’s not. And in Tesla’s case, the numbers should convince even the staunchest skeptics that this automaker’s moving vehicles at a fast pace.\nTSLA Stock at a Glance\nThe Tesla bear camp was out in full force, as you might recall, back in 2020. At that time, the TSLA stock price was moving up quickly, and the company enacted a 5-for-1share split on Aug. 31 of that year.\nAs it turned out, neither the stock split nor the protests of the bears could slow down the bull market. If anything, it just accelerated into 2021.\nJanuary was a particularly heady month, as TSLA stock slammed into resistance at almost exactly $900. The buyers tried to push the stock above $900 again in February, but to no avail.\nAdmittedly, traders who chased the stock at that level were punished in 2021. The Tesla share price chopped and flopped around during the summer and into the fall, landing at $780 in early October.\nSo, here’s the kicker. Tesla’s trailing 12-month price-to-earnings ratio is 411.49x. This, no doubt, will frustrate some value investors.\nA New Paradigm\nOn the other hand, Tesla’s P/E ratio has been in the triple digits for quite a while now.\nToday’s investors must be able to adapt to a new paradigm: a stock is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it, and Wall Street will continue to reward a high-growth company for as long as it wants to.\nThe best advice for angry value investors is: don’t try to resist the reality of today’s marketplace. It’s not a battle you’re likely to win.\nBesides, Tesla’s delivery data is clearly on the right track.\nFor the third quarter of 2021, Tesla delivered 241,300 electric vehicles. That figure topped the analyst consensus estimate of 232,000.\nFurthermore, Tesla’s quarterly shipments grew 20% compared to the prior quarter, and an eye-popping 73% from the year-ago quarter.\nContinuing to Dominate\nWedbush analyst Dan Ives reacted to these figures with an insightful comment about Tesla’s ability to thrive despite the company’s challenges.\n“While there are many competitors in the EV space, Tesla continues to dominate market share as evidenced again this quarter while battling through the chip shortage and now is seeing rebounding China demand after facing headwinds earlier this year,” Ives explained.\nIndeed, the global semiconductor shortage hindered many automakers’ production lines. Yet, despite this, Tesla’s second-quarter revenues nearly doubled to $11.96 billion. Moreover, Tesla’s quarterly revenue result beat Wall Street’s estimate of $11.53 billion.\nFor the full year of 2021, Tesla has guided for more than 750,000 vehicle deliveries. That’s ambitious, but at the current rate, the company should be able to exceed its expectations. So, the naysayers don’t have much data on which to base their bear thesis now.\nFor Tesla’s investors, the future is looking as bright as ever.\nAs Ives put it, Tesla’s recent results speak to “an electric vehicle demand trajectory that looks quite robust for Tesla heading into the fourth quarter and 2022.”\nThe Takeaway\nTesla’s price-to-earnings ratio might be a hard pill for some investors to swallow. Yet, investing isn’t always about bottom-fishing for rock-bottom valuations.\nIt can also be about high-growth businesses that beat expectations.
