Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) . Taiwan Semiconductor reports Q2 financial performance in two weeks, on July 16th. Currently, Wall Street is looking for EPS of $0.93, without much divergence in opinion. This name is not as highly followed across the community of analysts. I can only find four analysts that have gone as far as to make quarterly projections, six that have made annual projections, and just two that have really stuck their necks out and stated a price target at any point in the past six months.</p>\n<p>The range of EPS expectations for Q2 EPS for TSM, across those four analysts is just $0.91 to $0.95. Wall Street is looking for approximately $13.2 billion in revenue generation for the quarter, which would be year over year sales growth of about 27%. This would be an acceleration in sales growth for a second consecutive quarter.</p>\n<p><b>This Week</b></p>\n<p>It was Tuesday. DigiTimes reports that Taiwan Semiconductor is expected to record record revenues for June, due to shipments of iPhones showing up in the data. Apparently, reduced purchases by client Bitmain, as China bans Bitcoin mining had not taken the toll on TSM sales as some had expected. Demand for 5nm and 7nm processors had offset the loss of that mining business as the firm shipped chips for Apple's (AAPL) smartphones in time to appear in June's numbers. The expectation is that the firm stays on course for 20% sales growth for the fiscal year, and that June could be flat from May (which is a good thing).</p>\n<p>Early this (Friday) morning, news broke that Apple and Intel (INTC) will be the first customers to test TSM's 3nm production technology, which if all goes well, deploys toward the back half of 2022. Nikkei Asia reports that Intel is planning at least two projects to design CPUs for notebooks and data centers around the new 3nm chips.</p>\n<p>Just a quick tutorial. TSM's 5nm chips are the most advanced chips available and if you have an iPhone 12, you have one of these chips. TSM is indicating that the new 3nm chips will offer a 10% to 15% boost to computing performance compared to the current 5nm product, while also reducing power consumption by 25% to 30%.</p>\n<p>As an aside, Intel announced the delay of the Sapphire Rapids data center processor earlier this week. While this is seen around Wall Street as yet another chance for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) , and even Nvidia (NVDA) , to tackle even more market share away from the lumbering giant, but also makes at least this investor wonder just how Intel thinks they are going to get to a point anytime soon where they can compete with the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor as a global foundry to other chip designers.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street</b></p>\n<p>Of those few analysts that I mentioned who actually cover the name, only one reacted to this news. Susquehanna's five star (rated at TipRanks) analyst Mehdi Hosseini upgraded the name from \"Negative\" to \"Neutral\", while upping his target price from $85 to $105. The only other analyst with a recent target price is Jim Kelleher of Argus Research (also five stars). Kelleher initiated the name a week earlier as a \"Buy\" with a $150 target.</p>\n<p><b>The Chart</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/19c41db815e4b2cbbc0f31979123e544\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"530\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Readers will see that in late April, these shares managed to turn a descending triangle (which is a bearish pattern) into a flat basing pattern without ever allowing the triangle to close. Since bottoming, TSM has retaken both the 21 day EMA and the 50 day SMA, using the former as support on weakness just yesterday.</p>\n<p><b>The Plan</b></p>\n<p>Regular followers well know that I have been hot for the semis for a good while now, in spite of, or rather because of the widely covered shortages that are creating significant pricing power.</p>\n<p>I am already long AMD, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) , both of whom have been solid investments. I am long Micron (MU) , which looked good until this week. I am long Nvidia which has simply been epic.</p>\n<p>I am also long semiconductor equipment names... Applied Materials (AMAT) , and Brooks Automation (BRKS) , two names that have been good, and meh, respectively. I probably have room for a large foundry that will probably make short work of Intel (my opinion) once Intel tries to move in on their business.</p>\n<p>I think TSM is ripe for entry, perhaps to the tune of 1/8 of intended position size. I would expect to add a second tranche of 1/8 at either a test of the 21 day EMA or a retaking of the $122 level, which is our pivot. It’s likely that once this artificial selling pressure disappears, these stocks will bounce back.</p>\n<p>To be sure, window dressing is a powerful force on several occasions throughout the calendar, not just at this time of year. It should have the biggest impact at the end of December, since more investors look at their portfolio holdings in early January than in any other month of the year. Fund managers therefore go out of their way to sell their losers prior to Dec. 31 in order to avoid the embarrassment of having to report that they had ever owned them.</p>\n<p>Just the opposite is the case for stocks that managers buy for window dressing. These are the stocks that already have been performing well and which managers want to show in their end-of-quarter holdings report. Their cosmetic buying will cause these stocks to perform even better — which, in turn, results in them falling back to earth once the new quarter comes around.</p>\n<p>As expected, January is the month in which the previous month’s worst performers fare best relative to the previous month’s best performers — a pattern known as the “short term reversal effect.” This is illustrated in the chart below, which reflects monthly data back to 1926. July is the second-most powerful month for this pattern. That also makes sense because, after January, July is the next most common time for investors to read through their brokerage statements.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6ac3a509127efd603df1d98de04774e7\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"418\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Also as expected, end-of-quarter window dressing is less of a factor at the end of the first- and third quarters. In fact, as you can see from the chart, the short-term reversal effect is even less dominant in April than in non-quarter-end months.</p>\n<p><b>How to play the short-term reversal in July</b></p>\n<p>As is often the case, an exchange-traded fund has been created to exploit the short-term reversal effect. Vesper US Large Cap Short-Term Reversal Strategy ETFUTRN,“seeks to capitalize on the tendency for stocks that have experienced sharp recent sell-offs to experience near-term rebounds.”</p>\n<p>Because the fund was only recently created, in September 2018, the ETF’s average monthly returns since then are only suggestive of the long-term pattern. But its average return in July has been better (4.1%) than in any other month.</p>\n<p>For anyone interested in the individual stocks that performed the worst in June, I constructed the following list. I started with the 50 stocks in the S&amp;P 1500 index with the worst June returns, and then eliminated ones not currently recommended by any of the top-performing newsletters monitored by my newsletter-performance-tracking service.</p>\n<p>The 15 stocks listed below survived this winnowing process. It’s likely that once this artificial selling pressure disappears, these stocks will bounce back.\nTo be sure, window dressing is a powerful force on several occasions throughout the calendar, not just at this time of year. It should have the biggest impact at the end of December, since more investors look at their portfolio holdings in early January than in any other month of the year. Fund managers therefore go out of their way to sell their losers prior to Dec. 31 in order to avoid the embarrassment of having to report that they had ever owned them.\nJust the opposite is the case for stocks that managers buy for window dressing. These are the stocks that already have been performing well and which managers want to show in their end-of-quarter holdings report. Their cosmetic buying will cause these stocks to perform even better — which, in turn, results in them falling back to earth once the new quarter comes around.\nAs expected, January is the month in which the previous month’s worst performers fare best relative to the previous month’s best performers — a pattern known as the “short term reversal effect.” This is illustrated in the chart below, which reflects monthly data back to 1926. July is the second-most powerful month for this pattern. That also makes sense because, after January, July is the next most common time for investors to read through their brokerage statements.\n\nAlso as expected, end-of-quarter window dressing is less of a factor at the end of the first- and third quarters. In fact, as you can see from the chart, the short-term reversal effect is even less dominant in April than in non-quarter-end months.\nHow to play the short-term reversal in July\nAs is often the case, an exchange-traded fund has been created to exploit the short-term reversal effect. Vesper US Large Cap Short-Term Reversal Strategy ETFUTRN,“seeks to capitalize on the tendency for stocks that have experienced sharp recent sell-offs to experience near-term rebounds.”\nBecause the fund was only recently created, in September 2018, the ETF’s average monthly returns since then are only suggestive of the long-term pattern. But its average return in July has been better (4.1%) than in any other month.\nFor anyone interested in the individual stocks that performed the worst in June, I constructed the following list. I started with the 50 stocks in the S&P 1500 index with the worst June returns, and then eliminated ones not currently recommended by any of the top-performing newsletters monitored by my newsletter-performance-tracking service.\nThe 15 stocks listed below survived this winnowing process. The Nasdaq Composite erased earlier gains and closed 0.1% lower at 14,360.39 amid a rise in bond yields. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped 4 basis points to 1.52%.\nThe S&P 500 rallied 2.7% for the week, notching its biggest weekly gain since early February. The Dow gained 3.4% this week for its best week since mid-March, while the Nasdaq advanced 2.4%.\nFriday’s rally came after a key inflation indicator that the Federal Reserve uses to set policy rose 3.4% in May, the fastest increase since the early 1990s, the Commerce Department reported Friday. The hydrogen fuel cell specialist put up a mighty display in 2020’s new energy enamored stock market, with the share gains coming free and easy. But earlier this year, the tables had turned as investors fled from growth stocks to more inflation-safe environs. What’s more, Plug Power ran into a mess of its own making. There was suddenly a lot of anxiousness around the company when an audit unearthed non-cash related errors while the company was getting its 10-K filing ready, after which it needed to refile fiscal 2018–2019 financial results along with some recent quarterly statements.\nWith the refiling now done, that overhang has been put to rest, and PLUG has belatedly posted its 1Q21 earnings. The results were a mixed bag, but following recent updates, investors already knew what was more or less in store. In fact, the market reacted favorably to the latest developments, which have also encouraged Evercore analyst James West.\nThe unveiling of General Motors as a new “pedestal/critical customer,” says West, should lead to “additional uptake throughout the automotive industry given the ringing endorsement from GM.”\nWhat’s more, the company teased investors with the prospect of a fifth “pedestal” customer, one West thinks will be revealed later this year and will join a client list that includes not only GM, but Amazon, Walmart and Home Depot. The addition, West believes, will further “drive the stock.”\nPLUG’s sales are also on the rise, although the company is still a way off being profitable. However, West is “not at all concerned with the lack of near-term profits.”\n“PLUG is clearly in growth mode, the path towards achieving greater scale is more solidified, and renewable hydrogen costs continue to fall,” the analyst said. “Long-term investors should take solace with PLUG’s runway after 2024 when the company will be generating +$2B of annual revenues and is no longer investing for the long-term.”\nAccordingly, West reiterated an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating on PLUG stock backed by a $42 price target. equity benchmark climbed 0.3% to hit another closing record high of 4,280.70. Financials were the best-performing S&P 500 sector with a 1.3% gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 237.02 points, or 0.7%, to 34,433.84, sitting less than 2% from its record. The Nasdaq Composite erased earlier gains and closed 0.1% lower at 14,360.39 amid a rise in bond yields. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped 4 basis points to 1.52%.\nThe S&P 500 rallied 2.7% for the week, notching its biggest weekly gain since early February. The Dow gained 3.4% this week for its best week since mid-March, while the Nasdaq advanced 2.4%.\nFriday’s rally came after a key inflation indicator that the Federal Reserve uses to set policy rose 3.4% in May, the fastest increase since the early 1990s, the Commerce Department reported Friday. It should have the biggest impact at the end of December, since more investors look at their portfolio holdings in early January than in any other month of the year. Fund managers therefore go out of their way to sell their losers prior to Dec. 31 in order to avoid the embarrassment of having to report that they had ever owned them.</p>\n<p>Just the opposite is the case for stocks that managers buy for window dressing. These are the stocks that already have been performing well and which managers want to show in their end-of-quarter holdings report. Their cosmetic buying will cause these stocks to perform even better — which, in turn, results in them falling back to earth once the new quarter comes around.</p>\n<p>As expected, January is the month in which the previous month’s worst performers fare best relative to the previous month’s best performers — a pattern known as the “short term reversal effect.” This is illustrated in the chart below, which reflects monthly data back to 1926. July is the second-most powerful month for this pattern. That also makes sense because, after January, July is the next most common time for investors to read through their brokerage statements.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6ac3a509127efd603df1d98de04774e7\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"418\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Also as expected, end-of-quarter window dressing is less of a factor at the end of the first- and third quarters. In fact, as you can see from the chart, the short-term reversal effect is even less dominant in April than in non-quarter-end months.</p>\n<p><b>How to play the short-term reversal in July</b></p>\n<p>As is often the case, an exchange-traded fund has been created to exploit the short-term reversal effect. Vesper US Large Cap Short-Term Reversal Strategy ETFUTRN,“seeks to capitalize on the tendency for stocks that have experienced sharp recent sell-offs to experience near-term rebounds.”</p>\n<p>Because the fund was only recently created, in September 2018, the ETF’s average monthly returns since then are only suggestive of the long-term pattern. But its average return in July has been better (4.1%) than in any other month.</p>\n<p>For anyone interested in the individual stocks that performed the worst in June, I constructed the following list. I started with the 50 stocks in the S&amp;P 1500 index with the worst June returns, and then eliminated ones not currently recommended by any of the top-performing newsletters monitored by my newsletter-performance-tracking service.</p>\n<p>The 15 stocks listed below survived this winnowing process. There was suddenly a lot of anxiousness around the company when an audit unearthed non-cash related errors while the company was getting its 10-K filing ready, after which it needed to refile fiscal 2018–2019 financial results along with some recent quarterly statements.\nWith the refiling now done, that overhang has been put to rest, and PLUG has belatedly posted its 1Q21 earnings. The results were a mixed bag, but following recent updates, investors already knew what was more or less in store. In fact, the market reacted favorably to the latest developments, which have also encouraged Evercore analyst James West.\nThe unveiling of General Motors as a new “pedestal/critical customer,” says West, should lead to “additional uptake throughout the automotive industry given the ringing endorsement from GM.”\nWhat’s more, the company teased investors with the prospect of a fifth “pedestal” customer, one West thinks will be revealed later this year and will join a client list that includes not only GM, but Amazon, Walmart and Home Depot. The addition, West believes, will further “drive the stock.”\nPLUG’s sales are also on the rise, although the company is still a way off being profitable. However, West is “not at all concerned with the lack of near-term profits.”\n“PLUG is clearly in growth mode, the path towards achieving greater scale is more solidified, and renewable hydrogen costs continue to fall,” the analyst said. “Long-term investors should take solace with PLUG’s runway after 2024 when the company will be generating +$2B of annual revenues and is no longer investing for the long-term.”\nAccordingly, West reiterated an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating on PLUG stock backed by a $42 price target. DigiTimes reports that Taiwan Semiconductor is expected to record record revenues for June, due to shipments of iPhones showing up in the data. Apparently, reduced purchases by client Bitmain, as China bans Bitcoin mining had not taken the toll on TSM sales as some had expected. Demand for 5nm and 7nm processors had offset the loss of that mining business as the firm shipped chips for Apple's (AAPL) smartphones in time to appear in June's numbers. The expectation is that the firm stays on course for 20% sales growth for the fiscal year, and that June could be flat from May (which is a good thing).</p>\n<p>Early this (Friday) morning, news broke that Apple and Intel (INTC) will be the first customers to test TSM's 3nm production technology, which if all goes well, deploys toward the back half of 2022. Nikkei Asia reports that Intel is planning at least two projects to design CPUs for notebooks and data centers around the new 3nm chips.</p>\n<p>Just a quick tutorial. TSM's 5nm chips are the most advanced chips available and if you have an iPhone 12, you have one of these chips. TSM is indicating that the new 3nm chips will offer a 10% to 15% boost to computing performance compared to the current 5nm product, while also reducing power consumption by 25% to 30%.</p>\n<p>As an aside, Intel announced the delay of the Sapphire Rapids data center processor earlier this week. While this is seen around Wall Street as yet another chance for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) , and even Nvidia (NVDA) , to tackle even more market share away from the lumbering giant, but also makes at least this investor wonder just how Intel thinks they are going to get to a point anytime soon where they can compete with the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor as a global foundry to other chip designers.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street</b></p>\n<p>Of those few analysts that I mentioned who actually cover the name, only one reacted to this news. Susquehanna's five star (rated at TipRanks) analyst Mehdi Hosseini upgraded the name from \"Negative\" to \"Neutral\", while upping his target price from $85 to $105. The only other analyst with a recent target price is Jim Kelleher of Argus Research (also five stars). Kelleher initiated the name a week earlier as a \"Buy\" with a $150 target.</p>\n<p><b>The Chart</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/19c41db815e4b2cbbc0f31979123e544\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"530\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Readers will see that in late April, these shares managed to turn a descending triangle (which is a bearish pattern) into a flat basing pattern without ever allowing the triangle to close. Since bottoming, TSM has retaken both the 21 day EMA and the 50 day SMA, using the former as support on weakness just yesterday.</p>\n<p><b>The Plan</b></p>\n<p>Regular followers well know that I have been hot for the semis for a good while now, in spite of, or rather because of the widely covered shortages that are creating significant pricing power.</p>\n<p>I am already long AMD, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) , both of whom have been solid investments. I am long Micron (MU) , which looked good until this week. I am long Nvidia which has simply been epic.</p>\n<p>I am also long semiconductor equipment names... Applied Materials (AMAT) , and Brooks Automation (BRKS) , two names that have been good, and meh, respectively. I probably have room for a large foundry that will probably make short work of Intel (my opinion) once Intel tries to move in on their business.</p>\n<p>I think TSM is ripe for entry, perhaps to the tune of 1/8 of intended position size. I would expect to add a second tranche of 1/8 at either a test of the 21 day EMA or a retaking of the $122 level, which is our pivot.
