Even though the opportunity to buy the dip has all but vanished at this point, as the drawdown narrows to less than 5%, the Apple Maven still thinks that now is a good time to own AAPL shares.</p>\n<p>Today, we present one more reason that justifies owning the Cupertino company’s stock now. Rather than higher potential returns, we look at the bullish case from the perspective of lower risks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1f77cd919bf55f9c7b79f631b0255910\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"697\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 1: Apple Park in Cupertino, CA.</span></p>\n<p><b>Volatility drops</b></p>\n<p>When it comes to investing, the Apple Maven sees the two sides of the coin: risk and return. Much attention tends to be directed at the latter: will gains be rich going forward? Arguably not enough time is spent discussing the risk that needs to be assumed to capture the higher expected returns.</p>\n<p>One common measure of risk is volatility: in other words, how much the stock price tends to swing from period to period (say, day to day), measured statistically by one standard deviation. The lower the number, the better. AAPL’s volatility over the past decade has averaged a bit more than 28%, which is consistent with the company’s profile as a higher-growth, mega-cap tech name.</p>\n<p>Throughout most of 2020, Apple stock’s rolling one-month volatility stayed above this long-term average – and even reached peaks of more than 100% during the thick of the COVID-19 crisis! But lately, jittery market action has given way to steadier, more predictable price movements. See chart below.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ed2d71410be5264bb7596ca191a0578\" tg-width=\"804\" tg-height=\"481\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 2: AAPL volatility of daily returns.</span></p>\n<p>Another way to think of risk is to consider the worst day of performance over a given period. Considering a rolling one-month window, Apple stock has produced steepest daily losses of -3.2% over the past ten years, on average. But in the past month, that figure dropped to -2.5%.</p>\n<p>The chart below shows that the worst daily declines in Apple shares (again, on a rolling one-month basis) have been moderating lately. In fact, since late Q3 of last year, the figure has declined consistently from -8% in September 2020 to just short of -4% in the summer of 2021 to better than -3% now.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f60d4184f2edec907b1ec8942826d56c\" tg-width=\"1001\" tg-height=\"600\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 3: AAPL worst day, rolling 1-month.</span></p>\n<p><b>Why less risky?</b></p>\n<p>There are several possible reasons why investing in AAPL has become less risky lately. First, the company has proven that it can execute very well prior to, during, and after the thick of the pandemic. When some tech companies failed to deliver great results without the stay-at-home tailwinds (think Amazon in Q2), Apple has managed to wow investors each quarter.</p>\n<p>COVID-19 dominated the conversation during most of 2020. Global economies recovering from the pandemic has now become a major concern for investors in 2021. Nearly agnostic to it all is Apple, which helps to justify lower stock price volatility in the recent past.</p>\n<p>The other plausible justification is a bit less clear, if not more controversial or contrarian. The Apple Maven has argued that treasury yields (i.e. longer-term interest rates) have&nbsp;climbed a bit too much, too fast. We present another reason why this could be the case – think lower risks, rather than higher potential returns.\nApple stock continues to climb towards all-time highs, levels not seen since around six weeks ago. Even though the opportunity to buy the dip has all but vanished at this point, as the drawdown narrows to less than 5%, the Apple Maven still thinks that now is a good time to own AAPL shares.\nToday, we present one more reason that justifies owning the Cupertino company’s stock now. Rather than higher potential returns, we look at the bullish case from the perspective of lower risks.\nFigure 1: Apple Park in Cupertino, CA.\nVolatility drops\nWhen it comes to investing, the Apple Maven sees the two sides of the coin: risk and return. Much attention tends to be directed at the latter: will gains be rich going forward? Arguably not enough time is spent discussing the risk that needs to be assumed to capture the higher expected returns.\nOne common measure of risk is volatility: in other words, how much the stock price tends to swing from period to period (say, day to day), measured statistically by one standard deviation. The lower the number, the better. AAPL’s volatility over the past decade has averaged a bit more than 28%, which is consistent with the company’s profile as a higher-growth, mega-cap tech name.\nThroughout most of 2020, Apple stock’s rolling one-month volatility stayed above this long-term average – and even reached peaks of more than 100% during the thick of the COVID-19 crisis! But lately, jittery market action has given way to steadier, more predictable price movements. See chart below.\nFigure 2: AAPL volatility of daily returns.\nAnother way to think of risk is to consider the worst day of performance over a given period. Considering a rolling one-month window, Apple stock has produced steepest daily losses of -3.2% over the past ten years, on average. But in the past month, that figure dropped to -2.5%.\nThe chart below shows that the worst daily declines in Apple shares (again, on a rolling one-month basis) have been moderating lately. In fact, since late Q3 of last year, the figure has declined consistently from -8% in September 2020 to just short of -4% in the summer of 2021 to better than -3% now.\nFigure 3: AAPL worst day, rolling 1-month.\nWhy less risky?\nThere are several possible reasons why investing in AAPL has become less risky lately. First, the company has proven that it can execute very well prior to, during, and after the thick of the pandemic. When some tech companies failed to deliver great results without the stay-at-home tailwinds (think Amazon in Q2), Apple has managed to wow investors each quarter.\nCOVID-19 dominated the conversation during most of 2020. Global economies recovering from the pandemic has now become a major concern for investors in 2021. Nearly agnostic to it all is Apple, which helps to justify lower stock price volatility in the recent past.\nThe other plausible justification is a bit less clear, if not more controversial or contrarian. The Apple Maven has argued that treasury yields (i.e. longer-term interest rates) have climbed a bit too much, too fast. Elsewhere, economic data on consumer confidence is also due for release.</p>\n<p>The Senate is expected to vote Monday on a procedural motion over the legislation passed by the House of Representatives last week. That bill included a plan to temporarily fund the government through early December, and came alongside a measure to raise the government debt ceiling through December 2022.</p>\n<p>The latter point has been an area of contention for Senate Republicans, who are only narrowly outnumbered by Democratic lawmakers in both chambers and who have threatened to block the bill in its current form.</p>\n<p>Senate Republicans including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have suggested that Democratic lawmakers should use the budget reconciliation process to raise the debt ceiling without Republican support. McConnell has, however, supported a short-term government funding bill that excludes a debt ceiling suspension.</p>\n<p>\"If they [the Democrats] want to tax, borrow and spend historic sums of money without our input, they’ll have to raise the debt limit without our help. The reminder served as a standard warning one week out from Congress's deadline to reach an agreement to at least temporarily continue funding the government.</p>\n<p>Though leaders of both political parties have agreed that a continuing resolution to avoid the shutdown at the end of the month is needed, the ongoing tension over raising the debt limit has served as a potential roadblock in this effort.</p>\n<p>\"We still expect Congress to avert a partial government shutdown at the start of October. Republicans won’t vote for the current continuing resolution being touted by the Democratic leadership, which also includes a new debt ceiling suspension,\" wrote Paul Ashworth, chief North America economist for Capital Economics, in a note Friday. \"But we expect a Plan B to emerge next week with the latter stripped out, which Republicans will support.\"</p>\n<p>\"The bigger issue is that there doesn’t appear to be an easy path to raising the debt ceiling by mid-October, which is when estimates suggest the Treasury’s will exhaust the 'extraordinary measures it is currently using to keep the lights on,\" he added.</p>\n<p>Investors have also grown jittery as the debates wore on, with stocks posting their worst day since May last week amid a confluence of concerns that also included debt concerns with China Evergrande.</p>\n<p>Many strategists, however, have suggested market participants need not be overly concerned about the impacts of a potential government shutdown.</p>\n<p>\"Historically, we've seen that government shutdowns tend to be short-lived,\" Jordan Jackson, JPMorgan Asset Management global market strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. \"We also know that for those non-essential federal employees, they do get furlough pay as well.\"</p>\n<p>\"If it lasts more than 30 days, it's certainly going to have a bigger impact on the economy. But generally speaking, these shutdowns tend to be short-lived and markets — while they may correct in the short-term — they do sort of continue to grind higher,\" he added. \"I think it's certainly a risk in terms of a short-term mini correction there. But again, with all the liquidity out there, I think any sort of blip in the markets will be short-lived.\"</p>\n<p>Historical equity performance during and immediately following a government shutdown has also tended to point to a muted market impact.</p>\n<p>\"In the 14 government shutdowns since 1980, the S&amp;P 500 generated median returns of -0.1% on the dates of budget authority expiration, 0.1% during the shutdown periods, and 0.3% on the dates of resolution,\" David Kostin, Goldman Sachs chief equity strategist, wrote in a note published on Sept. 21.</p>\n<p>\"One notable exception was the most recent federal shutdown in December 2018, when the S&amp;P 500 fell 2% on the spending authority expiration date,\" he added. \"However, this decline was likely driven primarily by investor concerns about Fed tightening.\"</p>\n<p>Kostin also noted that the typical government shutdown since 1980 has only lasted three days before ultimately being resolved. More recent shutdowns have lasted several times longer, however, with the duration of the four most recent federal shutdowns averaging 18 days, Kostin said.</p>\n<h3>Consumer confidence</h3>\n<p>On the economic data front, one of the most closely watched new pieces of data will be on consumer confidence.</p>\n<p>The Conference Board is set to release its September consumer confidence index Tuesday morning. Economists expect the index to tick up only slightly compared to August, with consumers' views on the coronavirus and rising prices stabilizing near the lowest level since February.</p>\n<p>Specifically, consensus economists are looking for the index to rise to 115.0 in September after dropping to 113.8 in August. During the last monthly report, consumers' assessments of current business and labor market conditions both eased, and expectations for the next six months out also deteriorated.</p>\n<p>\"Consumer confidence fell to a six-month low in August, due to concerns around the Delta variant and inflation,\" wrote Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer in a note on Friday. \"We think these concerns largely remained in September.\"</p>\n<p>At the time, Lynn Franco, senior director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, said it was still \"too soon to conclude\" whether decline in consumer confidence would \"result in consumers significantly curtailing their spending in the months ahead.\"</p>\n<p>The latest spending data has also been equivocal. The Commerce Department's latest report showed retail sales rose 0.7% in August after declining in July. However, the categories posting the biggest declines were areas like e-commerce shops and grocery stores, suggesting consumer behavior was shifting back toward stay-in-place trends and away from in-person events like restaurant dining amid the latest wave of the coronavirus.</p>\n<h3>Economic calendar</h3>\n<ul>\n <li><p><b>Monday: </b>Durable goods orders, August preliminary (0.6% expected, -0.1% in July); Much attention tends to be directed at the latter: will gains be rich going forward? Arguably not enough time is spent discussing the risk that needs to be assumed to capture the higher expected returns.</p>\n<p>One common measure of risk is volatility: in other words, how much the stock price tends to swing from period to period (say, day to day), measured statistically by one standard deviation. The lower the number, the better. AAPL’s volatility over the past decade has averaged a bit more than 28%, which is consistent with the company’s profile as a higher-growth, mega-cap tech name.</p>\n<p>Throughout most of 2020, Apple stock’s rolling one-month volatility stayed above this long-term average – and even reached peaks of more than 100% during the thick of the COVID-19 crisis! But lately, jittery market action has given way to steadier, more predictable price movements. Considering a rolling one-month window, Apple stock has produced steepest daily losses of -3.2% over the past ten years, on average. But in the past month, that figure dropped to -2.5%.</p>\n<p>The chart below shows that the worst daily declines in Apple shares (again, on a rolling one-month basis) have been moderating lately. First, the company has proven that it can execute very well prior to, during, and after the thick of the pandemic. When some tech companies failed to deliver great results without the stay-at-home tailwinds (think Amazon in Q2), Apple has managed to wow investors each quarter.</p>\n<p>COVID-19 dominated the conversation during most of 2020. Global economies recovering from the pandemic has now become a major concern for investors in 2021. Nearly agnostic to it all is Apple, which helps to justify lower stock price volatility in the recent past.</p>\n<p>The other plausible justification is a bit less clear, if not more controversial or contrarian. The Apple Maven has argued that treasury yields (i.e. longer-term interest rates) have&nbsp;climbed a bit too much, too fast. Or is this historically cyclical sector up to its old tricks and headed into a sustained downtrend that will rip your face off.</p>\n<p>A lot depends on your timeline but if you like to own stocks for years rather than rent them for days, the group is a buy. The chief reason: “It’s different this time.”</p>\n<p>Those are admittedly among the scariest words in investing. But the chip sector has changed so much it really is different now – in ways that suggest it is less likely to crush you.</p>\n<p>You’d be a fool to think there are no risks. I’ll go over those. But first, here are the three main reasons why the group is “safer” now – and six names favored by the half-dozen sector experts I’ve talked with over the past several days.</p>\n<p><b>1. The wicked witch of cyclicality is dead</b></p>\n<p>“Demand in the chip sector was always boom and bust, driven by product cycles,” says David Winborne, a portfolio manager at Impax Asset Management. “<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FBNC\">First</a> PCs, then servers, then phones.” But now demand for chips has broadened across the economy so the secular growth story is more predictable, he says.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/JE\">Just</a> look around you. Because of the increased “digitalization” of our lives and work, there’s greater diversity of end market demand from all angles. Think remote office services like <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a>, online shopping, cloud services, electric vehicles, 5G phones, smart factories, big data computing and even washing machines, points out Hendi Susanto, a portfolio manager and tech analyst at Gabelli Funds who is bullish on the group.</p>\n<p>“There is no aspect of the modern digital economy that can function without semiconductors,” says Motley Fool chip sector analyst John Rotonti. “That means more chips going into everything. The long-term demand is there.”</p>\n<p>He’s not kidding. Chip sector revenue will double by 2030 to $1 trillion from $465 billion in 2020, predicts William&nbsp;Blair&nbsp;analyst Greg Scolaro.</p>\n<p>All of this means the widespread supply shortages you’ve been hearing about “likely won’t be cured until sometime late next year,” says <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a> chip sector analyst Vivek Arya. “That’s not just our view, but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> confirmed by a majority of large customers.”</p>\n<p><b>2. The players have consolidated</b></p>\n<p>All up and down the production chain, from design through the various types of equipment producers to manufacturing, industry players have consolidated down into what Rotonti calls “earned” duopolies or monopolies.</p>\n<p>In chip design software, you have Cadence Design Systems&nbsp;and Synopsys.In production equipment, companies dominate specialized niches like ASML&nbsp;in extreme ultraviolet lithography&nbsp;(EUV). Manufacturing is dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor&nbsp;and Samsung Electronics.</p>\n<p>These companies earned their niche or duopoly status by being the best at what they do. This makes them interesting for investors. The consolidation also means players behave more rationally in terms of pricing and production capacity, says Rotonti.</p>\n<p><b>3. Profitability has improved</b></p>\n<p>This more rational behavior, combined with cost cutting, means profitability is now much higher than it was historically. “The economics of chip making has improved massively over past few years,” says Winbourne. Cash flow or EBITDA margins are often now over 30% whereas a decade ago they were in the 20% range.</p>\n<p>This has implications for valuation. Though chip stocks trade at about a market multiple, they appear cheap because they are better companies, points out Lamar Villere, portfolio manager with Villere &amp; Co. “They are not trading at a frothy multiple.”</p>\n<p><b>The stocks to buy</b></p>\n<p>Here are six names favored by chip experts I recently checked in with.</p>\n<p><b>New management plays</b></p>\n<p>Though Peter Karazeris, a senior equity research analyst at Thrivent, has reasons to be cautious on the group (see below), he singles out two companies whose performance may get a boost because they are under new management: Qualcomm&nbsp;and ON Semiconductor.</p>\n<p>Both have solid profitability. Qualcomm was recently hit by one-off issues like bad weather in Texas that disrupted production, but the company has good exposure to the 5G phone trend. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ON\">ON Semiconductor</a> is expanding beyond phones into new areas like autos, industrial and the Internet of Things connected-device space.</p>\n<p><b>A data center and gaming play</b></p>\n<p>Karazeris also singles out Nvidia,which gets a continuing boost from its exposure to data center and gaming device chip demand — because of its superior design prowess.</p>\n<p><b>Design tool companies</b></p>\n<p>Speaking of design, when companies like Qualcomm and NVIDIA want to design chips, they turn to the design tools supplied by Cadence Design Systems and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNPS\">Synopsys</a>.</p>\n<p>Their software-based design tools help chip innovators create the blueprint for their chips, explains Rotonti at Motley Fool, who singles out these names. “They are not the fastest growers in the world, but they have good profit margins.” They also dominate the space.</p>\n<p><b>An EUV&nbsp;play</b></p>\n<p>To put those blueprints onto silicon in the early stages of chip production, companies like Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung turn to ASML. The U.S. wants more production at home so it is not vulnerable to disruptions in Chinese supply chains. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CAAS\">China</a> wants to make 70% of the chips it uses by 2025, up from 5% now, says Winborne.</p>\n<p>The upshot here is that there’s lots of government support to boost manufacturing – so there will be much more of it. The risk is oversupply at some point in the future. This might also create a pull forward in chip equipment purchases — leading to a lull down the road which could hurt sales and margin trends at equipment makers.</p>\n<p>Next, big tech companies like Alphabet,Apple&nbsp;and Ammazon.com&nbsp;are all doing their own chip design, which threatens specialized chip companies that do the same thing.</p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QTM\">Quantum</a> computing</b></p>\n<p>Computers using chip designs based on quantum physics instead of traditional semiconductor architectures have superior performance, points out Scolaro at William Blair. “While it probably won’t become mainstream for at least another five years, quantum computing has the potential to transform everything from technology to healthcare.”</p>\n<p><b>A disturbing signal</b></p>\n<p>A blend of global purchasing managers (PMI) indexes peaked in April and then decelerated for three months. Meanwhile chip sales growth continued. Normally the two follow the same trend, points out Karazeris, who tracks this indicator at Thrivent. He chalks the divergence up to inventory building which is less sustainable than true end-market demand. So, he takes the divergence as a bearish signal for the chip sector.</p>\n<p>Another cautionary sign comes from the forecasted weakness in pricing for dynamic random-access memory&nbsp;(DRAM) chips. “These are typically things you see at tops of cycles not the bottoms,” says Karazeris.</p>\n<p>But it’s also possible the slowdown in the global PMI is more a reflection of chip shortages than a sign that the shortages aren’t real (and are just inventory building). “The divergence doesn’t necessarily mean that chip orders are going to roll over and die. Or is this historically cyclical sector up to its old tricks and headed into a sustained downtrend that will rip your face off.\nA lot depends on your timeline but if you like to own stocks for years rather than rent them for days, the group is a buy. The chief reason: “It’s different this time.”\nThose are admittedly among the scariest words in investing. But the chip sector has changed so much it really is different now – in ways that suggest it is less likely to crush you.\nYou’d be a fool to think there are no risks. I’ll go over those. But first, here are the three main reasons why the group is “safer” now – and six names favored by the half-dozen sector experts I’ve talked with over the past several days.\n1. The wicked witch of cyclicality is dead\n“Demand in the chip sector was always boom and bust, driven by product cycles,” says David Winborne, a portfolio manager at Impax Asset Management. “First PCs, then servers, then phones.” But now demand for chips has broadened across the economy so the secular growth story is more predictable, he says.\nJust look around you. Because of the increased “digitalization” of our lives and work, there’s greater diversity of end market demand from all angles. Think remote office services like Zoom, online shopping, cloud services, electric vehicles, 5G phones, smart factories, big data computing and even washing machines, points out Hendi Susanto, a portfolio manager and tech analyst at Gabelli Funds who is bullish on the group.\n“There is no aspect of the modern digital economy that can function without semiconductors,” says Motley Fool chip sector analyst John Rotonti. “That means more chips going into everything. The long-term demand is there.”\nHe’s not kidding. Chip sector revenue will double by 2030 to $1 trillion from $465 billion in 2020, predicts William Blair analyst Greg Scolaro.\nAll of this means the widespread supply shortages you’ve been hearing about “likely won’t be cured until sometime late next year,” says Bank of America chip sector analyst Vivek Arya. “That’s not just our view, but one confirmed by a majority of large customers.”\n2. The players have consolidated\nAll up and down the production chain, from design through the various types of equipment producers to manufacturing, industry players have consolidated down into what Rotonti calls “earned” duopolies or monopolies.\nIn chip design software, you have Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys.In production equipment, companies dominate specialized niches like ASML in extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV). Manufacturing is dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung Electronics.\nThese companies earned their niche or duopoly status by being the best at what they do. This makes them interesting for investors. The consolidation also means players behave more rationally in terms of pricing and production capacity, says Rotonti.\n3. Profitability has improved\nThis more rational behavior, combined with cost cutting, means profitability is now much higher than it was historically. “The economics of chip making has improved massively over past few years,” says Winbourne. Cash flow or EBITDA margins are often now over 30% whereas a decade ago they were in the 20% range.\nThis has implications for valuation. Though chip stocks trade at about a market multiple, they appear cheap because they are better companies, points out Lamar Villere, portfolio manager with Villere & Co. “They are not trading at a frothy multiple.”\nThe stocks to buy\nHere are six names favored by chip experts I recently checked in with.\nNew management plays\nThough Peter Karazeris, a senior equity research analyst at Thrivent, has reasons to be cautious on the group (see below), he singles out two companies whose performance may get a boost because they are under new management: Qualcomm and ON Semiconductor.\nBoth have solid profitability. Qualcomm was recently hit by one-off issues like bad weather in Texas that disrupted production, but the company has good exposure to the 5G phone trend.
