Investors should be happy.\nRivian Automotive (ticker: RIVN) picked up its first rating. It’s a Buy from Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. His price target is $130, almost 25% higher than where Rivian closed for trading on Friday.\nIves calls Rivian an “EV stalwart in the making,” adding the company “looking to strategically launch itself into an untapped market as SUV/Pickup Truck EVs are virtually nonexistent in the EV market today.” Trucks and SUVs are very popular in the U.S., typically accounting for more than 60% of total passenger vehicle sales.\n“Rivian is a unique vertically integrated EV player poised to have iron clad grip on pickup and SUV market,” Ives tells Barron’s in an emailed statement.” R.J. and team have scaled Rivian quickly and innovative design and skateboard front and center.”\nR.J. Scaringe is the MIT educated founder and CEO of Rivian. A skateboard design refers to a automotive chassis that includes many self contained components including electric motors and batteries. Other auto makers have skateboard-type designs as well.\nIves is also encouraged that Amazon.com (AMZN) is an early investor and early customer, ordering 100,000 delivery trucks from Rivian.\nGiven it’s the first rating, it’s the first chance for investors to look at estimates. Ives projects $3.6 billion in sales from about 45,000 vehicle deliveries in 2022 and $8.4 billion in sales from about 105,000 deliveries in 2023. The company isn’t expected to generate profit in either year.\nIves target price implies Rivian stock should trade for roughly 15 times estimated 2023 sales. Shares of Tesla (TSLA), the EV leader, trade for about 11 times estimated 2023 sales.\nIt’s a big, growth stock valuation, but Ives knows his way around growth stocks. He covers EVs and technology stocks such as Salesforce.com (CRM). On the automotive side of his coverage list, Ives rates shares of Tesla and General Motors (GM) both Buy. Despite a high valuation on the electric-vehicle trucking startup, Wall Street is upbeat about its prospects and believe Rivian is a long-term EV winner.\nThe 25-day quiet period brokers working on an initial public offering observe before publishing research is over. Now, as of Monday morning, 10 analysts have new Rivian (ticker: RIVN) ratings. Seven rate shares Buy. Three rate shares Hold.\nRivian stock isn’t reacting to the new Buys just yet. Shares were down about 0.6% in premarket trading. S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 0.1% and 0.4%, respectively.\nRivian’s early Buy-rating ratio is 70%. The average Buy-rating ratio for stocks in the S&P 500 is about 55%. What’s more, the Buy-rating ratio for Tesla (TSLA) is only 48%. Wall Street prefers Rivian stock over shares of the EV leader.\nJ.P. Morgan analyst Ryan Brinkman is one of the analysts that prefer Rivian.\nBrinkman rates Rivian shares at Hold. His price target is $104. That isn’t a very bullish rating, but his price target values Rivian stock at roughly $100 billion. Brinkman, however, rates Tesla shares Sell and has a $250 price target for that stock. Brinkman’s Tesla price target implies Tesla stock is worth about $250 billion. That’s two-and-a-half times more than Rivian, but Tesla is profitable and expected to generate about $70 billion in sales in 2022. Rivian is expected to generate less than $4 billion in sales in 2022.\nOne of the new Buy ratings comes from Baird. “Clark Kent races to catch Iron Man,” wrote Baird analyst George Gianarikas is his launch report. That refers to both Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe, who has black-rimmed glasses making him look a little like the mild mannered reporter, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has been likened in the past to a real life Tony Stark, or Iron Man.\n“Rivian has an opportunity to formidably challenge Tesla’s market dominance,” added Gianarikas. “The company has adopted a promising, vertically integrated approach, reinforced by its robust balance sheet, Amazon partnership, and strong recruitment.” Rivian is manufacturing its trucks and SUVs at its new plant. Baird’s Tesla price target is $888 a share.\nGianarikas’ price target is the second highest on Wall Street. RBC analyst Joseph Spak rates Rivian shares Buy. His price target is a Wall-Street-high $165 a share.\n“Rivian has category defining vehicles with a focus on the key truck segment that should allow for 50% [average annual revenue growth] through end-of-decade,” wrote Spak in his coverage-launch report. “A clean-sheet approach and strong tech will allow [the company] to eventually use the vehicle as a platform for higher-margin software and services.”\nSpak projects $3.4 billion in 2022 sales for Rivian. His 2030 sales projection is $86 billion. The announcement further establishes the relationship between these two companies. Their relationship was first established when Amazon selected Rivian to producea fleet of electric vans.\nRivian will be using AWS tech in many areas, including analytics, containers, computation and machine learning. The technology is expected to be a fundamental tool in Rivian’smissionto innovate “the technological foundations for customers’ electric vehicle fleet management and more efficient vehicle charging.”\nIn addition, Rivian seeks to implement cloud technology in streamlining its business. Investors should be happy.\nRivian Automotive (ticker: RIVN) picked up its first rating. It’s a Buy from Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. His price target is $130, almost 25% higher than where Rivian closed for trading on Friday.\nIves calls Rivian an “EV stalwart in the making,” adding the company “looking to strategically launch itself into an untapped market as SUV/Pickup Truck EVs are virtually nonexistent in the EV market today.” Trucks and SUVs are very popular in the U.S., typically accounting for more than 60% of total passenger vehicle sales.\n“Rivian is a unique vertically integrated EV player poised to have iron clad grip on pickup and SUV market,” Ives tells Barron’s in an emailed statement.” R.J. and team have scaled Rivian quickly and innovative design and skateboard front and center.”\nR.J. Scaringe is the MIT educated founder and CEO of Rivian. A skateboard design refers to a automotive chassis that includes many self contained components including electric motors and batteries. Other auto makers have skateboard-type designs as well.\nIves is also encouraged that Amazon.com (AMZN) is an early investor and early customer, ordering 100,000 delivery trucks from Rivian.\nGiven it’s the first rating, it’s the first chance for investors to look at estimates. Ives projects $3.6 billion in sales from about 45,000 vehicle deliveries in 2022 and $8.4 billion in sales from about 105,000 deliveries in 2023. The company isn’t expected to generate profit in either year.\nIves target price implies Rivian stock should trade for roughly 15 times estimated 2023 sales. In early 2020, the companies said they are shelving the plans for a Lincoln-branded EV but would go ahead with an alternative vehicle based on Rivian technology.\nThe Ford CEO suggested in the interview that the company is now increasingly confident in competing in the EV space by itself. Another handicap that forced the going-solo decision was the complexities involved in integrating the hardware and software together.\nWhy It's Important:Rivian shares debuted on Wall Street on Nov. 10 following aninitial public offeringat a bumper valuation of over $100 billion. The company's strong debut and the subsequent run up in shares have raised eyebrows over its valuation which has taken it past the market capitalization of legacy U.S. automakers, including Ford.\nRivian's product pipeline consists of RIT, an EV pickup truck, which it began delivering to customers in September. As of Oct. 30, the company produced 180 R1Ts and delivered 156 R1Ts, with the bulk of them going to the company's employees.\nThe company noted that at the end of October, it had preorders of about 55,400 R1Ts and R1Ss.
