Both companies demonstrated their expensive issues with their recent results, even as they continue to fight to keep their drivers around the world as independent contractors to avoid the ever increasing costs of having employees.</p>\n<p>Uber and Lyft have been spending heartily to attract more drivers lately as the delta variant of COVID-19 spreads. In early April,Uber unveiled a plan to spend $250 million&nbsp;to lure drivers back to the platform by giving them bonuses, as the pandemic seemed as if it were starting to ease up. Lyft said in its conference call that it spent $375 million in incentives that it classified as “contra revenue,” and it expects that the “contra revenue” will exceed $376 million in the third quarter.</p>\n<p>“No one can predict what’s going to happen with delta going forward,” Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi told analysts when asked about its impact on the ride-hailing business. “But so far, we’re hedged and the trends that we’re seeing are pretty good.”</p>\n<p>Uber is hedged with its Uber Eats business, which saw a huge surge of growth during the pandemic delivering restaurant meals to consumers while the rides business slowed down, but that business also has not shown itself to be profitable. First, as the founder, I was determined to award all the subscribers with stock to demonstrate my loyalty to them.</p>\n<p>Second, I was insistent that the deal be priced much lower than the underwriters wanted. We had already made a ton of money for initial investors. Why not leave a lot on the table and let the new investors do well?</p>\n<p>Third, I wanted enough stock placed with good hands that there would be no flippers and I wanted close coordination with the various brokers who tended to infiltrate the process and hijack the openings by batching market orders and opening the stocks way too high and then shorting them all the way down.</p>\n<p>I lost on every single point.</p>\n<p>The underwriters said we could not allocate to subscribers.</p>\n<p>Second, the price of the deal would not be controlled to where we could have a small pop so everyone would win.</p>\n<p>Third, the over-the-transom orders, those who placed market orders, were batched by an outfit called Knight Securities, not the underwriter, Goldman Sachs, and it opened at $62 -- it wasn't even clear what the opening price was it was so chaotic -- traded to $66, like how Robinhood traded to $39 and change, and then never traded higher.</p>\n<p>Everyone who bought that day lost money.</p>\n<p>Everyone who sold that day made money.</p>\n<p>No subscribers got in, most bought at the opening, from what I can tell, and I alienated everyone except the big dogs.</p>\n<p>It is amazing that here we are in 2021 and the process, while letting clients in, failed to price it so that Robinhood left money on the table. Believe me, it was possible to do so. But the underwriters and the management chose not to do so. We don't know which side screwed up, or both, but there was a successful blueprint; believe me, if I knew what it was in 1999, they knew what it is now.</p>\n<p>I always regretted what happened. Most people blamed me as I was the face of the process. I was astounded by how horrendous it was and did not \"take the long view\" because the long view sucked.</p>\n<p>Why do these things go wrong? I do blame the underwriter because they do this every day and the principals only do it once. The theater company said it would use the funds for potential acquisitions, upgrading its theaters and deleveraging its balance sheet.Shares were up 22.6% when the market closed.On Tuesday afternoon, Bloomberg News reported that Mudrick had sold all of its new shares in AMC. The stock fell from its highs of the day following the report.AMC’s business was effectively halted during the pandemic, with movie theaters shut in most of the country for months and major studios delaying releases during the pandemic. However, the stock becamea favorite of traders on Redditand has seen wild swings in recent months.The sharesdoubled last weekon incredibly high volume as the speculative activity by retail traders driven by message board chats ramped back up once again.The company has taken advantage of those price surges by selling additional shares to raise cash. The stock is up more than 1,000% year to date.“Given that AMC is raising hundreds of millions of dollars, this is an extremely positive result for our shareholders,” CEO and President Adam Aron said in a filing. “It was achieved through the issuance of only 8.5 million shares, representing less than 1.7% of our issued share capital and only a small portion of our typical daily trading volume.”The dramatic price swings could also be due to ashort squeezein the stock, which is caused by traders who have bet against the stock buying shares to limit their losses. Roughly 20% of the floated shares of the company are sold short, according to S3 Partners.AMC has around $5 billion in debt and needed to defer $450 million in lease repayments as its revenue largely dried up during the pandemic. Theaters were closed for months to help stop the spread of the virus, and when the company reopened its doors, few consumers felt comfortable attending screenings, and movie studios held back new releases.Now, as vaccination rates rise and the number of coronavirus cases decline, consumer confidence in returning to movie theaters has spiked. The index SLYG tracks includes stocks with the strongest growth traits based on sales growth, earnings change to price and momentum.</p>\n<p>Back to SLYV, financials accounted for the biggest sector weight at 24% of assets. Industrials weighed in at about 17%, consumer discretionary 15% and real estate 10%. Information technology was next at 8% and materials, energy and health care, 6% each.&nbsp;Smaller positions in consumer staples, utilities and communication services made up the rest.</p>\n<p>SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Value is in IBD's ETF Leaders, but SPDR S&amp;P 600 Small Cap Growth is not.</p>\n<p><b>GameStop Stock Leads</b></p>\n<p><b>GameStop</b>(GME),<b>Macy's</b>(M),<b>PDC Energy</b>(PDCE),<b>Resideo Technologies</b>(REZI) and<b>BankUnited</b>(BKU) were the top five holdings as of Wednesday.</p>\n<p><b>Pacific Premier Bancorp</b>(PPBI),<b>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</b>(BBBY),<b>Ameris Bancorp</b>(ABCB),<b>First Hawaiian</b>(FHB) and<b>Insight Enterprises</b>(NSIT) rounded out the top 10.</p>\n<p>GameStop has undergone wide swings this year. It rocketed about 2,500% early this year amid theshort-squeeze rallyfueled by the Reddit/WallStreetBets crowd.GME stockthen crashed 92% from a Jan. 28 high to its mid-February low. That was followed by an 805% surge the next three weeks, and a 66% drop over the next two weeks.</p>\n<p>Action had been relatively subdued since, until Thursday's 27% dive. Even after that, GameStop stock was up 1,070% year to date through Thursday's close.</p>\n<p>Could GME be inflating SLYV's performance? Certainly, given its quadruple-digit gain. But a look at SLYG's portfolio is interesting. GameStop stock is also the top holding in the growth stock ETF, though the rest of the top 10 differ vastly.</p>\n<p><b>Second Meme Stock In Top 10</b></p>\n<p>PDC Energy, up 130%, saw the next biggest gain in the top 10. The Colorado-based oil and gas explorer has a 97Relative Strength Rating, which mean it's in the top 3% of all stocks. Its relative strength line is at a 52-week high, a bullish sign.</p>\n<p>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, another meme stock, is up 78% this year. Shares surged more than 200% in January, amid a spate of wild double-digit swings. BBBY stock then gave back the bulk of its gains.</p>\n<p>But the home goods retailer appears to be back on the radar of the WallStreetBets discussion group. On June 2, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond soared 62% before diving 28% the next session.</p>\n<p>The rest of the top 10 stocks have also outperformed the broader market. Macy's is up 68% year to date, while Resideo, Pacific Premier and Ameris have risen more than 40% each. The lowest gainer, bank holding company First Hawaiian, has advanced 20%. The company expects to post revenue between $110 billion and $116 billion, surpassing Wall Street’s projection $108.6 billion.</p>\n<p>Crucially, Amazon confirmed in its guidance that this year’s Prime Day will take place in June, which will likely help year-over-year comparisons for revenue in the second quarter.
