During the first quarter,Tesla sold $272 million worth of “digital assets,”which helped it reduce operating losses by $101 million, the company revealed in its earnings statement.\nMusk’s comments on social media about cryptocurrency often send prices soaring or plummeting, but appeared to have little effect Sunday. Economists polled by Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal had forecast a milder 0.2% advance.

The rate of inflation over the past year jumped to 4.2% from 2.6% in the prior month — the highest level since 2008.

The pace of inflation has surged after years of languishing at unusually low levels largely due to the rapid reopening of the U.S. economy.

Businesses can’t keep up in demand, a problem exacerbated by ongoing bottlenecks in the global trading system triggered by the pandemic. Computer chips are especially in short supply and that’s held up production of new autos and other manufactured goods.

Americans are also rushing to dine out, travel or go far away for vacation, activities they shied away from during the pandemic. That’s also driving up prices at popular vacation resorts and other venues where people plan to congregate.

Senior Federal Reserve officials, who are supposed to protect the U.S. from high inflation, insist the increase is temporary. They contend inflation will subside by next year once the pandemic fades, most people go back to work and the global economy is largely recovered.

Investors are less sure. U.S. interest rates have risen in the past six months on worries about inflation and they could go even higher.

If food and gas are set aside, so-called core consumer prices rose an even stronger 0.9% in April. That pushed the yearly rate up to 3% from 1.6%, the highest level in 26 years.

The core rate is closely followed by economists as a more accurate measure of underlying inflation.

Big picture: Inflation has risen sharply and it’s going to stay high for a while. Economists polled by Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal had forecast a milder 0.2% advance. The rate of inflation over the past year jumped to 4.2% from 2.6% in the prior month — the highest level since 2008.The pace of inflation has surged after years of languishing at unusually low levels largely due to the rapid reopening of the U.S. economy.Businesses can’t keep up in demand, a problem exacerbated by ongoing bottlenecks in the global trading system triggered by the pandemic. Computer chips are especially in short supply and that’s held up production of new autos and other manufactured goods.Americans are also rushing to dine out, travel or go far away for vacation, activities they shied away from during the pandemic. That’s also driving up prices at popular vacation resorts and other venues where people plan to congregate.Senior Federal Reserve officials, who are supposed to protect the U.S. from high inflation, insist the increase is temporary. They contend inflation will subside by next year once the pandemic fades, most people go back to work and the global economy is largely recovered.Investors are less sure. U.S. interest rates have risen in the past six months on worries about inflation and they could go even higher. If food and gas are set aside, so-called core consumer prices rose an even stronger 0.9% in April. That pushed the yearly rate up to 3% from 1.6%, the highest level in 26 years. The core rate is closely followed by economists as a more accurate measure of underlying inflation.Big picture: Inflation has risen sharply and it’s going to stay high for a while. Businesses still can’t get many vital supplies on time or at reasonable prices and now the cost of labor is going up.Some economists contend the U.S. is on the verge of its worst bout of inflation in decades. They worry massive government stimulus is contributing to the problem and say the Fed is being too placid. The U.S. central bank is betting that what it calls “transitory” inflation will fade by next year and fall back toward its long-term goal of 2%.The economy will likely fine if the Fed is right, but if the central bank gets it wrong, all bets are off.Market reaction: The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA,-1.36%and S&P 500SPX,-0.87%were set to open lower in Wednesday trades. Some account holders then handed over either their banking credentials or cash to money mules.\nUOB said it has written to all affected customers and taken safety precautions such as immediately disabling their Internet and mobile banking access and advising them to reset their digital banking access.\nThe bank has also stepped up monitoring of the affected accounts and set an SMS alert to notify customers of online fund transfers at $1 or more.\nOther precautions include posting scam protection notices on the log-in pages of UOB websites.\n\"UOB is working closely with the Singapore Police Force on their investigations. We apologise to our customers that this has happened, as we have always made it a priority to keep their data secure,\" the bank said.\n\n\n\nMore on this topic\n\n\n \n\n\nRelated Story\nNew bank-related phishing scam involves impersonation of S'pore government officials\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nRelated Story\nResurgence of scam targeting bank customers: Police","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"U11.SI":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":592,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":106550550,"gmtCreate":1620135790170,"gmtModify":1634207561700,"author":{"id":"3580004880073789","authorId":"3580004880073789","name":"HongZ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b4110860773b024339f913150f17f80","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580004880073789","authorIdStr":"3580004880073789"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Sigh, will it drop more?","listText":"Sigh, will it drop more?","text":"Sigh, will it drop more?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d9c43642612f986f3f7f088806ccc3b","width":"1080","height":"2224"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/106550550","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":701,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":108847698,"gmtCreate":1620014460114,"gmtModify":1634208512854,"author":{"id":"3580004880073789","authorId":"3580004880073789","name":"HongZ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b4110860773b024339f913150f17f80","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580004880073789","authorIdStr":"3580004880073789"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"For sharing","listText":"For sharing","text":"For sharing","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/108847698","repostId":"347845261","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":347845261,"gmtCreate":1618489138253,"gmtModify":1618495438569,"author":{"id":"3563967154363605","authorId":"3563967154363605","name":"罗国强Kenny","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a64c08a818345f1ee44647f4f4c23a69","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3563967154363605","authorIdStr":"3563967154363605"},"themes":[],"title":"5 Singapore REITs trading at their 5 years Price/NAV high","htmlText":"Despite the Covid-19 pandemic significantly impacting REIT prices, some REITs have rebounded to close to their 5 years Price/NAV high. It's also providing some of the best returns, with the stock up over 2,000% since the Oracle of Omaha started buying it 33 years ago. Modern investors looking to navigate the next decade would be well-served to learn how Buffett made this profitable calculation.
\n
At a recentYahoo Finance Plus webinar, Bill Smead, chief investment officer at Smead Capital Management, began the lesson by explaining how Buffett manages growth and value in the Berkshire portfolio.
\n
\"To Buffett and [Charlie] Munger, all investing is value investing. They want to buy the bird in the hand, which is worth two in the bush. They want to buy something for well less than they think it's worth. So the ideal thing in investing is based on the mathematics of common stock investing. If you buy a stock for $30 and you pay cash, the worst thing that could possibly happen to you is it goes to zero. But the best thing that could possibly happen to you is exponential,\" says Smead.
\n
Smead explains how Buffett and Munger differ from legendary value investor Benjamin Graham and why value and growth aren't mutually exclusive. Graham would \"buy 200 cigar butts at half the price that they're worth, and through the market's movements [would] get wealthier doing that,\" says Smead.
\n
Buffett, on the other hand, wants to \"buy a business that is growing over the decades at a time when other people are scared to death or don't understand why it's going to be such a good thing over the next 20 or 30 years — and then enjoy a double whammy, which is the re-evaluation.\" Smead explains this is \"the price that people are willing to pay for each dollar of earnings growth as well as the earnings number [itself] grows.\"
\n
Coca-Cola a risky bet
\n
Berkshire first bought Coke stock from 1988 to 1989,scooping upover 23 million shares. WhenBuffett first started buying in the first quarter, many investors were still skittish from the Black Monday crash in October 1987. Buffett going big on the stock was considered risky, especially because it was not a typical Berkshire investment.
\n
Buffett defended the position in the 1988 annual Berkshire letter to shareholders with what would become one of hismost famous aphorisms. \"In 1988 we made major purchases of Federal Home Loan Mortgage ... and Coca Cola. We expect to hold these securities for a long time. In fact, when we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever,\" said Buffett.
\n
Berkshire more than quadrupled the position to 100 million shares by 1994 and to this day hasn't sold any. After two stock splits, the share count is now 400 million, but Berkshire's cost basis has remained $1.3 billion since 1994. As of year-end 2020, the investment was worth $21.5 billion, a return of 1550%, not including dividends. (Berkshire owns 9.3% of all Coke shares outstanding as of 2020 year-end.)
\n
But the 1987 crash hangover had faded for Buffett, and the world was changing. The Soviet empire was beginning to crumble, and the Berlin Wall was about to topple — which it finally did in November 1989.
\n
Smead relates his own experience as a broker in the 1980s to Buffett, saying, \"Buffett [was buying] Coca-Cola in '89 at about 18 times earnings. Well, I started in the investment business in 1980 as a stockbroker at Drexel Burnham Lambert. And my first stock that I was pitching to people was Coca-Cola — $30 a share. It was at six times earnings paying a 5% dividend. When Buffett bought in eight years later, he paid six times what I was trying to pay for it.\"
\n
Smead explains how investor sentiment changed throughout the 1980s, as memories of the tumultuous 1970s faded and morphed into optimism over abull marketthat would become one of history's longest and most profitable.
\n
\"I would be destitute and living in a tent in downtown Phoenix or Downtown Seattle if I kept pitching [Coca-Cola] stock because no one would buy it. Virtually, no one wanted it. Common stock ownership in 1981 was 8% of U.S. household assets — off the charts low. No one wanted that company,\" he says.
\n
Smead explains how the changing political environment would also change the macro picture, providing new opportunities and markets for companies. \"[A] number of countries that used to be closed were going to open their doors. And the Coca-Cola corporation was going to be able to sell their beverages to a huge part of the population that they had never sold it to before. And in emerging markets and less wealthy countries, that 'clean, something to drink' was very valuable.\"
\n
New investment opportunities post-COVID
\n
In the present day, the pandemic has thrown the macro picture into upheaval again, presenting investors with a new set of challenges. Smead assesses the demographic changes afoot and sets the stage for what he believes are new, secular investment opportunities.
\n
\"We looked at the prior time when the 30- to 45-year-old-age group was dramatically larger than the previous group, the ones that preceded them. And that was the baby boomers taking the place of the silent generation in the 70s and 80s ... And we now have 90 million millennials — not too long from now, 95 million — that are going to take 65 million Gen Xers place in the 30- to 45-year-old age bracket. So that just creates a huge amount of demand for necessities,\" he says.
\n
Smead references research from Fundstrat Global Advisors that ranks the industries it expects millennials to disrupt as their spending eclipses that of boomers. \"At the top of that list is mortgage interest and finance charges. So long before it was in the news, long before it was popular to think about, we have been over-owning the homebuilders, knowing that we have years of building homes to make up the differential between demand for homes, that population will drive the existing homes for sale,\" Smead says.
\n
Smead expectsstock pickers to outperformpassive investors over the coming decade. He also sees the footwear and household furnishings and equipment industries to outperform based on the same demographic trends relating to homebuilders.
\n
\"[T]he irony of the pandemic is: It's actually catalyzed one of our most important themes, which is the necessity spending of the millennial age group,\" says Smead.
","source":"lsy1584348713084","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Warren Buffett invested in Coca-Cola and its lesson
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Warren Buffett invested in Coca-Cola and its lesson\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-30 17:56 GMT+8 Yahoo\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Coca-Cola (KO) is Warren Buffett's oldest stock position at Berkshire Hathaway. He also sees the footwear and household furnishings and equipment industries to outperform based on the same demographic trends relating to homebuilders.\n\"[T]he irony of the pandemic is: It's actually catalyzed one of our most important themes, which is the necessity spending of the millennial age group,\" says Smead.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":583,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":109503405,"gmtCreate":1619703396807,"gmtModify":1634210589398,"author":{"id":"3580004880073789","authorId":"3580004880073789","name":"HongZ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b4110860773b024339f913150f17f80","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580004880073789","authorIdStr":"3580004880073789"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/109503405","repostId":"1198510299","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":596,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":800646401,"gmtCreate":1627301292203,"gmtModify":1631886488778,"author":{"id":"3580004880073789","authorId":"3580004880073789","name":"HongZ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b4110860773b024339f913150f17f80","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580004880073789","authorIdStr":"3580004880073789"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a - A UOB employee who fell for a police impersonation scam disclosed the personal information of 1,166 of the bank's customers who are China nationals.\nThe data divulged comprised customer names, identification and mobile numbers and account balances, UOB noted on Friday (May 7).\n\"Their bank account numbers were not disclosed and our IT systems remain secure,\" it added.\n\n\n\nThe employee, who was working in Singapore, has been suspended and is assisting a police investigation.\nPreliminary findings show that the employee had been deceived into handing the information of these Chinese nationals with Singapore-based accounts to scammers who were impersonating police officers from China.\nA UOB spokesman said the bank was not able to disclose any details about when the scam occurred and how the employee had been taken in, as the matter is under police investigation.\n\n\n\n\nSimilar cases in the past have involved swindlers claiming to be police officers in China telling victims that their credit or debit card details had been used for fraudulent transactions or that their bank accounts were involved in money-laundering activities.\nThey were then told to transfer their money for investigations. We apologise to our customers that this has happened, as we have always made it a priority to keep their data secure,\" the bank said.\n\n\n\nMore on this topic\n\n\n \n\n\nRelated Story\nNew bank-related phishing scam involves impersonation of S'pore government officials\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nRelated Story\nResurgence of scam targeting bank customers: Police","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"U11.SI":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":592,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":108847698,"gmtCreate":1620014460114,"gmtModify":1634208512854,"author":{"id":"3580004880073789","authorId":"3580004880073789","name":"HongZ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b4110860773b024339f913150f17f80","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580004880073789","authorIdStr":"3580004880073789"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"For sharing","listText":"For sharing","text":"For sharing","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/108847698","repostId":"347845261","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":347845261,"gmtCreate":1618489138253,"gmtModify":1618495438569,"author":{"id":"3563967154363605","authorId":"3563967154363605","name":"罗国强Kenny","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a64c08a818345f1ee44647f4f4c23a69","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3563967154363605","authorIdStr":"3563967154363605"},"themes":[],"title":"5 Singapore REITs trading at their 5 years Price/NAV high","htmlText":"Despite the Covid-19 pandemic significantly impacting REIT prices, some REITs have rebounded to close to their 5 years Price/NAV high. ","content":"

UOB KH foresees a possible implementation of cooling measures as Singapore property prices jump in Singapore.

UOB Kay Hian analysts Adrian Loh has warned of possible cooling measures in the Singapore property market, saying in a April 27 note that “The strength in the Singapore property market, evidenced by strong sets of data in the past two weeks, has manifestly increased the chances that the government will implement cooling measures in the near term, in our view.
\n
“In our view, price increases of this magnitude may be politically unpalatable and reinforces our expectation for cooling measures,” he says.
\n
Citing statistics from the Urban Redevelopment Authority, private residential property\nprices rose 3.3% q-o-q in 1QFY2021, compared to a 2.1% rise in 4QFY2020.
\n
Condo resale volumes also hit a 10- year high in Mar 21 with 1,662 units resold, beyond a 100% y-o-y increase and 75% above five-year average volumes for March.
\n
“These, in addition to other bullish property data points have, in our view, increased the chances of the government possibly introducing cooling measures to limit further price increases in the next few months.” Loh highlights.
\n
Furthermore, supply in the pipeline of private residential units remains tight. Loh notes that planned private residential units in the pipeline have seen a material 66% decline since 3Q18. UOB Kay Hian analysts Adrian Loh has warned of possible cooling measures in the Singapore property market, saying in a April 27 note that “The strength in the Singapore property market, evidenced by strong sets of data in the past two weeks, has manifestly increased the chances that the government will implement cooling measures in the near term, in our view.\n“In our view, price increases of this magnitude may be politically unpalatable and reinforces our expectation for cooling measures,” he says. \nCiting statistics from the Urban Redevelopment Authority, private residential property\nprices rose 3.3% q-o-q in 1QFY2021, compared to a 2.1% rise in 4QFY2020. \nCondo resale volumes also hit a 10- year high in Mar 21 with 1,662 units resold, beyond a 100% y-o-y increase and 75% above five-year average volumes for March.\n“These, in addition to other bullish property data points have, in our view, increased the chances of the government possibly introducing cooling measures to limit further price increases in the next few months.” Loh highlights. \nFurthermore, supply in the pipeline of private residential units remains tight. Loh notes that planned private residential units in the pipeline have seen a material 66% decline since 3Q18. The existing pipeline of 11,242 units is also at a 20-year low, which could explain the bullish sentiment surrounding the private residential market.\nHe is also keeping tabs on the developing situation regarding the new Covid-19 infections in Singapore’s foreign workers’ dormitories. The benchmark iShares US Pharmaceuticals ETF (NYSEMKT:IHE) has underperformed the S&P 500 by almost 20% in this time, and some companies in particular look especially cheap. Their share prices have not kept pace with the broader bull market, and that presents a bargain opportunity for investors.
\n
Two big-name pharmaceuticals that have been making news a lot lately, much of that related to the COVID-19 pandemic, are Pfizer(NYSE:PFE) and Gilead(NASDAQ:GILD) (Pfizer with a vaccine in partnership with BioNTech, Gilead with a treatment called remdesivir). But while both have made COVID-related headlines, neither has seen a COVID-related boost -- both stocks are at a price-to-earnings ratio of less than 15, which is cheap from a valuation perspective in comparison to many peers. (Johnson & Johnson(NYSE:PFE) and Eli Lilly(NYSE:PFE) carry P/E ratios of 17.27 and 22.47 respectively.) But if we look to the future and past the pandemic, there is potential for both Pfizer and Gilead to produce great results for investors.
\n
\n
The case for Pfizer
\n
Founded in 1849 in Brooklyn, Pfizer has had a remarkable journey. After 172 years, the company remains in the foreground of innovation and breakthrough in new drugs and therapeutics. Over the past few decades, Pfizer has been the name behind such well-known drugs and consumer products as Advil, Bextra, Diflucan, Viagra, Chapstick, and Preparation H. And during the coronavirus pandemic, Pfizer's vaccine with BioNTech was the first to be approved by the FDA (on Dec. 11).
\n
As the world moves toward global inoculation, Pfizer stands to benefit with increasing revenue from this vaccine, which should bring in an estimated $15 billion in 2021 alone. For full-year 2021 guidance, management estimated revenue of between $59.4 billion and $61.4 billion, meaning the vaccine should account for about a quarter of the total.
\n
The company currently trades at a P/E of just 11.21 and offers investors a 4.3% dividend yield, much higher than the 1.37% average of theS&P 500 at this time. As mentioned before, Pfizer is trading at an extreme discount compared to its peers in the pharmaceutical space. With a bright future that I don't believe has been priced in yet by investors, this stock should be very tempting to add to portfolios.
\n
The case for Gilead
\n
Gilead Sciences joined many investors' watchlists (and portfolios) thanks to its COVID-19 treatment, remdesivir, which was approved Oct. 22 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Within a month, though, the World Health Organization issued adviceagainst using remdesivir, saying there was no evidence it improved survival or patient outcomes. Since then, the stock has languished around the $65 range. Despite the WHO announcing that Remdesivir does not do much to improve health of patients battling COVID-19, hospitals do continue to use it to treat patients in countries including India and Korea with moderate and severe infections.
\n
This was especially unfortunate given that, besides its efforts against COVID, the company seems to be in a tight spot. Its drug Biktarvy, a medicine to treat HIV, is its only product with increasing revenue in the past few years, with sales up 53% from 2019 to 2020. However, the company's other big names are flat or down, with Genvoya (for HIV) down 15%, Odefsy (for HIV-1) flat, and sofosbuvir (for hepatitis C) down 19% from 2019 to 2020.
\n
However, there is some good news as well -- the company looks to be expanding its business into new markets with the acquisition of a biotech company called Forty Seven. On March 10, Gilead committed buying all outstanding shares of FortySeven in an all-cash deal at a hefty $95 a share, which came to a $4.9 billion acquisition price.
\n
This move will help expand the company into cancer-fighting drugs, including magrolimab, an investigational monoclonal antibody that is being used against myelodysplastic syndrome, more often known as preleukemia. While the FDA has granted this drug fast-track status, hopefully meaning success for Gilead down the line, the future is still uncertain. While Gilead boasts a great 4.29% dividend yield, its P/E of only 9.26 looks to be discounted for a reason.
\n
There is still tremendous uncertainty for future applications of remdesivir in relation to COVID-19. And the stagnation and decline in most of its core products is a concern. While we could see Biktarvy's growth expand enough to possibly offset the decline in its other products, the future is very unclear. One bright spot is the newly acquired magrolimab, which has been very successful in clinical trials and is classified as \"first in-class.\" This drug could generate meaningful returns sometime in the future.
\n
Which stock should you buy?
\n
Both Pfizer and Gilead seem stable coming out of the pandemic, but the former appears far more likely to provide investors with superior returns into the future. Both companies are trading at very cheap valuations -- but in Gilead's case, that's justified, as an investment there will require a lot of faith in management to navigate out of the current tight spot. Pfizer, however, is a stable business with a lot more potential to build out its vaccine business into the future.
\n
Pfizer announced March 23 that it plans to build out its mRNA vaccine business by itself and sees massive potential in this new venture. Pfizer's current vaccines business, which includes its pneumonia vaccine Prevnar 13, brought in nearly $6.58 billion, or about 16% of the drugmaker's total sales last year.
