in Saratoga County, home to its headquarters and its most advanced chip factory.</p>\n<p>Until now, GlobalFoundries has been privately owned by the government of Abu Dhabi through a sovereign wealth fund known as Mubadala Investment Co.</p>\n<p>Looking to diversify its oil-focused economy, Abu Dhabi provided much of the initial investment to create GlobalFoundries more than a decade ago as a spinoff from Advanced Micro Devices into a so-called foundry that would not only make AMD's chips but also chips for other companies.</p>\n<p>GlobalFoundries essentially took AMD's factories around the world off its hands and then built Fab 8 at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta. The facility is the company's most advanced chip factory. Does that make sense?</p>\n<p>Monday, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi asked that question. He’s a Tesla (ticker: TSLA) bear—rating shares Sell with a $300 price target—mainly because he believes the stock is pricey. Still, EVs can be worth half of the industry if investors buy into three ideas.</p>\n<p>Today, 16 EV makers—including Tesla and yet-to-be public Rivian—are worth a combined $1.14 trillion. Tesla accounts for 74% of total EV value. Four of the top 10 most valuable auto makers are EV companies including: Tesla, Rivian,BYD (1211.Hong Kong), and NIO (NIO).</p>\n<p>As for the makers of conventional vehicles, more than 50 auto makers are worth a combined $1.42 trillion. The most valuable traditional car companies are:Toyota Motor (TM),Volkswagen (VOW3.Germany),Daimler (DAI.Germany), and General Motors (GM).</p>\n<p>Sales by the traditional companies still dominates unit volume, selling about 99% of the cars globally—97% of those are gasoline-powered, and 2% are EV. The EV pure-plays sell the remaining 1% worldwide.</p>\n<p>“The thinking, of course, is that pure-play EV vendors will ultimately come to dominate the automotive world,” wrote Sacconaghi in a Monday report.</p>\n<p>That’s the first thing investors need to believe to justify EV valuations. Sacconaghi points out that 2014 pure-play EV companies accounted for 14% of electric-car sales. That’s 28% today. Pure-play EV companies’ market share is growing.</p>\n<p>That’s the second belief required to stay bullish on EV makers’ stocks—that market share will continue to improve. “We suspect the market believes …that traditional OEMs will not be able to deliver competitive EV offerings in the future,” adds the analyst in his report. OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer, industry jargon for auto maker.</p>\n<p>The final thing investors need to believe is that EVs will be more profitable, per car, than conventional vehicles. EV companies tend to sell direct—which can help profitability. EV makers are also the leaders in selling add-on subscription based services. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Capability, or FSD, is probably the best example. Tesla sells the higher levels of its autonomous-driving software as a monthly subscription or for $10,000.</p>\n<p>The mix of volume and profit growth driven by superior products could justify valuations, but Sacconaghi isn’t a believer. “Our contention is that the automotive industry is an increasingly global and hypercompetitive industry and we believe that surplus profits and technology innovation will likely be competed away over time.”</p>\n<p>His views of the industry is one of the reasons he calls Tesla valuation “too rich.”</p>\n<p>Time will tell who is right. Sacconaghi’s target price still implies Tesla should be the world’s most valuable car company, just not two to three times the value of Toyota.</p>\n<p>Tesla stock has been on a tear of late, adding 34% over the past three months as investors have become more bullish about third quarter earnings due out on Wednesday evening. Does that make sense?\nMonday, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi asked that question. He’s a Tesla (ticker: TSLA) bear—rating shares Sell with a $300 price target—mainly because he believes the stock is pricey. Still, EVs can be worth half of the industry if investors buy into three ideas.\nToday, 16 EV makers—including Tesla and yet-to-be public Rivian—are worth a combined $1.14 trillion. Tesla accounts for 74% of total EV value. Four of the top 10 most valuable auto makers are EV companies including: Tesla, Rivian,BYD (1211.Hong Kong), and NIO (NIO).\nAs for the makers of conventional vehicles, more than 50 auto makers are worth a combined $1.42 trillion. The most valuable traditional car companies are:Toyota Motor (TM),Volkswagen (VOW3.Germany),Daimler (DAI.Germany), and General Motors (GM).\nSales by the traditional companies still dominates unit volume, selling about 99% of the cars globally—97% of those are gasoline-powered, and 2% are EV. The EV pure-plays sell the remaining 1% worldwide.\n“The thinking, of course, is that pure-play EV vendors will ultimately come to dominate the automotive world,” wrote Sacconaghi in a Monday report.\nThat’s the first thing investors need to believe to justify EV valuations. Sacconaghi points out that 2014 pure-play EV companies accounted for 14% of electric-car sales. That’s 28% today. Pure-play EV companies’ market share is growing.\nThat’s the second belief required to stay bullish on EV makers’ stocks—that market share will continue to improve. “We suspect the market believes …that traditional OEMs will not be able to deliver competitive EV offerings in the future,” adds the analyst in his report. OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer, industry jargon for auto maker.\nThe final thing investors need to believe is that EVs will be more profitable, per car, than conventional vehicles. EV companies tend to sell direct—which can help profitability. EV makers are also the leaders in selling add-on subscription based services. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Capability, or FSD, is probably the best example. Tesla sells the higher levels of its autonomous-driving software as a monthly subscription or for $10,000.\nThe mix of volume and profit growth driven by superior products could justify valuations, but Sacconaghi isn’t a believer. “Our contention is that the automotive industry is an increasingly global and hypercompetitive industry and we believe that surplus profits and technology innovation will likely be competed away over time.”\nHis views of the industry is one of the reasons he calls Tesla valuation “too rich.”\nTime will tell who is right. Sacconaghi’s target price still implies Tesla should be the world’s most valuable car company, just not two to three times the value of Toyota.\nTesla stock has been on a tear of late, adding 34% over the past three months as investors have become more bullish about third quarter earnings due out on Wednesday evening. Many buy shares in hopes of short-term gains, while others bet on the stock for the long haul. Short-term traders may, in fact, have good reasons to be concerned. What if Apple misses iPhone sales expectations in the next quarter, and the stock reacts negatively as a result?</p>\n<p>But long-term holders are probably looking at Apple’s business fundamentals further out in the future. There have been enough reports suggesting that demand for the iPhone 13 has been high, probably even better than demand for the already successful iPhone 12.</p>\n<p>If enough demand for a product exists, it is reasonable to think that temporary supply chain hiccups will only cause sales to shift from one period to the next. This is exactly what happened in 2020, when the COVID-19 crisis caused the iPhone 12 to be unveiled and launched later in the holiday season.</p>\n<p>The chart below shows iPhone sales growth in fiscal 2019 and 2020, and in the first periods of the current year. Notice how the painful revenue decline in 2019 seems to have created pent-up demand that was not met in fiscal Q4 of last year, due to the production delays. When those were finally resolved, fiscal 2021 revenues shot through the roof.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/36f351ccb2a56f417bb16d8f0246fcc4\" tg-width=\"804\" tg-height=\"568\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Figure 2: iPhone growth from 2019 to 2021.</span></p>\n<p>Average iPhone sales growth between the start of fiscal 2020 and now turned out to be a healthy 14%, although revenues were very lumpy from quarter to quarter. During the same period, and despite last year’s supply chain problems, Apple stock climbed 90%.</p>\n<p>Could the current component shortage cause revenues to merely shift around the calendar once again? I think it is plausible, if not likely.</p>\n<p><b>Apple is a good place to hide</b></p>\n<p>To be clear, the alleged production delays is not an Apple-specific problem. Component shortages in this year of recovery from the pandemic has been well documented and seems to be impacting consumer tech vendors across the board.</p>\n<p>Of course, an investor can choose not to commit to the tech sector at all, fearing that the whole industry will underperform as the global economies continue to bounce back. But if money is to be deployed in the space, I think that Apple is a safer-than-average bet due to best-in-class supply chain management.</p>\n<p>Last year, I explained in more detail that Apple has become “king of inventory management”under CEO Tim Cook – who is also the Cupertino company’s former COO. The iShares Semiconductor exchange-traded fund (SOXX) is up about 18% year to date, in line with comparable gains of the S&P 500.</p>\n<p>The sector has kept up even as shares of the largest companies in the ETF— Intel (INTC) and Broadcom (AVGO)—have underperformed. That pair is up about 9% and 14% year to date, respectively, lagging behind the industry and broader market.</p>\n<p>The shortage isn’t going away soon. Only Monday, auto parts supplier Aptiv (APTV) cut sales and earnings guidance for 2021. About 3 million cars that were expected to be built and sold aren’t going to roll off assembly lines because of a lack of chips, the company said.</p>\n<p>Investors can make the persisting shortage work for their portfolios by looking at Wall Street’s favorite chip-sector stocks. What good is that going to do you?”</p>\n<p>She points out the only extra money most people have goes towardinvesting for retirementin their 401(k) or IRA plans.</p>\n<p>Because you probably don’t plan to touch that money for decades, the best long-term strategy is to buy low. That way, your dollar will go much further now, leaving plenty of room for growth over the next 20, 30 or 40 years.</p>\n<p><b>2. Invest on a schedule</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e4102f8a6d5002090743b1cbded32ef9\" tg-width=\"703\" tg-height=\"293\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">katjen / Shutterstock</p>\n<p>While she prefers to buy low, Orman doesn’t recommend you stop investing completely when the market goes up.</p>\n<p>She wants casual investors to not get caught up in the daily ups and downs of the market.</p>\n<p>In fact, cheering for downturns now may be your best bet at getting a larger piece of very profitable investments — like some lucky investors were able to do back in 2007 and 2008.</p>\n<p>“When the market went down, down, down you could buy things at nothing,” says Orman. “And now look at them 15 years later.”</p>\n<p>She suggests you set up a dollar-cost averaging strategy, which means you invest your money in equal portions at regular intervals, regardless of the market’s fluctuations.</p>\n<p>This kind of approach is easy to implement with any of the many investing apps currently available to DIY investors.</p>\n<p>There are even apps that willautomatically invest your spare changeby rounding up your debit and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar.</p>\n<p><b>3. Diversify with fractional shares</b></p>\n<p>To help weather dips in specific corners of the market, Orman suggests you diversify your investments — balance your portfolio with investments in many different types of assets and sectors of the economy.</p>\n<p>Orman particularly recommends fractional-share investing. Does that make sense?</p>\n<p>Monday, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi asked that question. He’s a Tesla (ticker: TSLA) bear—rating shares Sell with a $300 price target—mainly because he believes the stock is pricey. Still, EVs can be worth half of the industry if investors buy into three ideas.</p>\n<p>Today, 16 EV makers—including Tesla and yet-to-be public Rivian—are worth a combined $1.14 trillion. Tesla accounts for 74% of total EV value. Four of the top 10 most valuable auto makers are EV companies including: Tesla, Rivian,BYD (1211.Hong Kong), and NIO (NIO).</p>\n<p>As for the makers of conventional vehicles, more than 50 auto makers are worth a combined $1.42 trillion. The most valuable traditional car companies are:Toyota Motor (TM),Volkswagen (VOW3.Germany),Daimler (DAI.Germany), and General Motors (GM).</p>\n<p>Sales by the traditional companies still dominates unit volume, selling about 99% of the cars globally—97% of those are gasoline-powered, and 2% are EV. The EV pure-plays sell the remaining 1% worldwide.</p>\n<p>“The thinking, of course, is that pure-play EV vendors will ultimately come to dominate the automotive world,” wrote Sacconaghi in a Monday report.</p>\n<p>That’s the first thing investors need to believe to justify EV valuations. Sacconaghi points out that 2014 pure-play EV companies accounted for 14% of electric-car sales. That’s 28% today. Pure-play EV companies’ market share is growing.</p>\n<p>That’s the second belief required to stay bullish on EV makers’ stocks—that market share will continue to improve. “We suspect the market believes …that traditional OEMs will not be able to deliver competitive EV offerings in the future,” adds the analyst in his report. OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer, industry jargon for auto maker.</p>\n<p>The final thing investors need to believe is that EVs will be more profitable, per car, than conventional vehicles. EV companies tend to sell direct—which can help profitability. EV makers are also the leaders in selling add-on subscription based services. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Capability, or FSD, is probably the best example. Tesla sells the higher levels of its autonomous-driving software as a monthly subscription or for $10,000.</p>\n<p>The mix of volume and profit growth driven by superior products could justify valuations, but Sacconaghi isn’t a believer. “Our contention is that the automotive industry is an increasingly global and hypercompetitive industry and we believe that surplus profits and technology innovation will likely be competed away over time.”</p>\n<p>His views of the industry is one of the reasons he calls Tesla valuation “too rich.”</p>\n<p>Time will tell who is right. Sacconaghi’s target price still implies Tesla should be the world’s most valuable car company, just not two to three times the value of Toyota.</p>\n<p>Tesla stock has been on a tear of late, adding 34% over the past three months as investors have become more bullish about third quarter earnings due out on Wednesday evening. Does that make sense?\nMonday, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi asked that question. He’s a Tesla (ticker: TSLA) bear—rating shares Sell with a $300 price target—mainly because he believes the stock is pricey. Still, EVs can be worth half of the industry if investors buy into three ideas.\nToday, 16 EV makers—including Tesla and yet-to-be public Rivian—are worth a combined $1.14 trillion. Tesla accounts for 74% of total EV value. Four of the top 10 most valuable auto makers are EV companies including: Tesla, Rivian,BYD (1211.Hong Kong), and NIO (NIO).\nAs for the makers of conventional vehicles, more than 50 auto makers are worth a combined $1.42 trillion. The most valuable traditional car companies are:Toyota Motor (TM),Volkswagen (VOW3.Germany),Daimler (DAI.Germany), and General Motors (GM).\nSales by the traditional companies still dominates unit volume, selling about 99% of the cars globally—97% of those are gasoline-powered, and 2% are EV. The EV pure-plays sell the remaining 1% worldwide.\n“The thinking, of course, is that pure-play EV vendors will ultimately come to dominate the automotive world,” wrote Sacconaghi in a Monday report.\nThat’s the first thing investors need to believe to justify EV valuations. Sacconaghi points out that 2014 pure-play EV companies accounted for 14% of electric-car sales. That’s 28% today. Pure-play EV companies’ market share is growing.\nThat’s the second belief required to stay bullish on EV makers’ stocks—that market share will continue to improve. “We suspect the market believes …that traditional OEMs will not be able to deliver competitive EV offerings in the future,” adds the analyst in his report. OEM is short for original equipment manufacturer, industry jargon for auto maker.\nThe final thing investors need to believe is that EVs will be more profitable, per car, than conventional vehicles. EV companies tend to sell direct—which can help profitability. EV makers are also the leaders in selling add-on subscription based services. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Capability, or FSD, is probably the best example. Tesla sells the higher levels of its autonomous-driving software as a monthly subscription or for $10,000.\nThe mix of volume and profit growth driven by superior products could justify valuations, but Sacconaghi isn’t a believer. “Our contention is that the automotive industry is an increasingly global and hypercompetitive industry and we believe that surplus profits and technology innovation will likely be competed away over time.”\nHis views of the industry is one of the reasons he calls Tesla valuation “too rich.”\nTime will tell who is right. Sacconaghi’s target price still implies Tesla should be the world’s most valuable car company, just not two to three times the value of Toyota.\nTesla stock has been on a tear of late, adding 34% over the past three months as investors have become more bullish about third quarter earnings due out on Wednesday evening.
