Tesla (TSLA) is seeking to buy $2.9 billion worth of equipment for manufacturing solar panels and cells from Chinese suppliers including Suzhou Maxwell Technologies, Reuters reported late Thursday, citing two people familiar with the matter.
It is part of the company's plan to add 100 gigawatts of solar capacity in the US, the report said.
China's Suzhou Maxwell Technologies is among the leading vendors of the machinery and has sought export approval from China's commerce ministry, the report said.
Tesla did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
