But those developments expose BlackBerry to a vast total addressable market that management estimated at $89 billion by 2025, which corresponds to an attractive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5d31abfbbf6cdcc04c5e000fbffa8cee\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Challenges in cybersecurity</h2>\n<p>However, BlackBerry remains far from reaching that growth trajectory. During its first fiscal quarter, which ended on May 31, revenue declined 15.5% year over year to $174 million.</p>\n<p>The ongoing negotiation to sell an important part of the company's patent portfolio had a negative effect on revenue. But more worryingly, revenue from the cybersecurity segment declined by 10.1% year over year to $107 million, which seems weak considering the secular growth in that market, boosted by the recent rise of ransomware attacks.</p>\n<p>In contrast, given that favorable context, the endpoint protection specialist <b>CrowdStrike</b> generated another quarter of impressive revenue growth (70% year over year to $302.8 million) during its latest quarter, despite its much larger scale.</p>\n<p>In particular, BlackBerry's endpoint protection cybersecurity offering Cylance hasn't caught up yet with the competition. As an illustration, the research specialist <b>Gartner</b> positioned Cylance far away from many competitors in its May 2021 endpoint protection platforms magic quadrant in terms of ability to execute and completeness of vision.</p>\n<p>Granted, BlackBerry enhanced its cybersecurity offerings last quarter with additional cloud-based capabilities to protect remote workers. But competitors, such as CrowdStrike, have already been proposing similar features for several quarters, or even years.</p>\n<h2>Internet of Things</h2>\n<p>In contrast, BlackBerry's Internet of Things (IoT) segment showed encouraging signs of recovery. That segment mainly includes QNX, the company's embedded operating system that can be integrated into any kind of device.</p>\n<p>So during the first fiscal quarter, revenue from IoT increased by 48.3% year over year to $43 million, partly thanks to the deployment of QNX in vehicles. Indeed, the research outfit Strategy Analytics estimated QNX software is now embedded in more than 195 million vehicles, compared to 175 million the year before.</p>\n<p>That's an encouraging development for BlackBerry over the long term, as it plans to leverage its footprint in the automotive industry to grow the adoption of its IVY platform. In addition, after having announced its IVY Innovation Fund several months ago to drive innovation, it launched its IVY Advisory Council during the last quarter to develop use cases.</p>\n<h2>Growth priced in</h2>\n<p>Despite the drop following these mixed fiscal first-quarter results, BlackBerry's stock is still up more than 80% since the beginning of the year. The company's market cap, now at $6.8 billion, corresponds to 7.9 times trailing 12-month revenue of $861 million, which indicates the market is pricing in strong growth going forward.</p>\n<p>So with cybersecurity representing 61.5% of revenue during the last quarter, the company must significantly improve its security business to match the market's expectations, which won't be easy given the crowded and strong competition in that area.</p>\n<p>In addition, the success of the company's IoT business will partly depend on its cybersecurity portfolio. Larger companies are more likely to have time-tested or mature operating models, making it less common that they generate eye-popping revenue growth.</p>\n<p>However, the following large-cap stocks didn't get that memo. That works out to a quintupling in full-year revenue in four years.</p>\n<p>Sea's secret sauce (say that three times fast) is that it has three rapidly growing operating segments. For the moment, it's being anchored by its digital gaming operations. The company ended March with close to 649 million active users, 12.3% of which were paying to play. That's well above the industry average, and it's notably higher than the 8.9% of quarterly active users who were paying <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> year ago.</p>\n<p>However, the superstar for this company is its e-commerce platform, Shopee. It's the top shopping app downloaded in Southeastern Asia, and it's becoming especially popular in Brazil. In the first quarter of 2021, Shopee saw $12.6 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) purchased. For some context here, Shopee did $10.3 billion in GMV in all of 2018. Both the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of the middle class throughout Southeastern Asia is driving online purchases.</p>\n<p>Lastly, Sea has its rapidly growing digital financial services segment. More than 26 million people were paying for mobile wallet services at the end of March. Joe Biden winning the presidency last year, coupled with Democrats regaining control of the Senate by the narrowest of margins, gives the current administration an opportunity to pass a clean energy bill. While it's unclear what a final infrastructure bill might look like, it's almost a certainty that clean vehicle solutions, such as those developed by Plug Power, will benefit.</p>\n<p>Additionally, the company secured two joint ventures just days apart in January. First, SK Group took a 10% equity stake in the company, with the duo aiming to introduce hydrogen fuel-cell-powered vehicles and hydrogen refilling stations in South Korea. A few days later, Plug landed a deal with French automaker <b>Renault</b> that'll see the two go after Europe's light commercial vehicle market. In fiscal 2021, Snowflake's sales grew by 124% to $592 million. But based on Wall Street's consensus for fiscal 2025, it's on track to generate $3.9 billion in revenue. This would represent a four-year increase of 559%.</p>\n<p>What makes Snowflake so special is the company's competitive advantages. For example, it's shunned subscriptions in favor of a pay-as-you-go operating model. Customers pay for the amount of data they store and the number of Snowflake Compute Credits used. This allows the company's clients to keep better tabs on their expenses.</p>\n<p>Also, since Snowflake's solutions are built atop the most popular cloud infrastructure platforms, customers can share data seamlessly, even across competing services.</p>\n<p>Though it's the fastest-growing cloud stock, Snowflake is also one of the priciest. It's currently valued at 67 times projected sales for fiscal 2022 and roughly 19 times estimated sales four years from now. Though <b>Tesla</b> and the U.S. EV market tend to get a lot of attention, the biggest opportunity is actually China. That's why <b>NIO</b> (NYSE:NIO) finds itself as one of the fastest-growing large-cap stocks on the planet. If all goes well, full-year sales can catapult from about $2.5 billion in 2020 to $16.8 billion in 2024. That's a sales increase of approximately 561%.</p>\n<p>Despite a global chip shortage, NIO has shown Wall Street that it can effectively scale its production. After delivering 20,060 vehicles in the first quarter, the company is on pace to deliver between 21,000 and 22,000 EVs in the second quarter. Once global chip supply issues are resolved, NIO will look to boost its annual delivery capacity to around 150,000 EVs.</p>\n<p>For NIO, innovation is extremely important. It's been introducing one new vehicle each year, with the sportier EC6 crossover SUV hitting showrooms last summer. It's quickly become a hit with EV buyers.</p>\n<p>Additionally, NIO introduced a battery-as-a-service program. For a monthly fee, this subscription service allows buyers to replace or upgrade their vehicle's batteries. It also reduces the initial purchase price of the vehicle. Following a pandemic-ravaged year where it brought in $476 million in sales, Wall Street is looking for Novavax to generate $5.8 billion in annual revenue in 2024. That's your run-of-the-mill sales increase of 1,118% over the coming four years.</p>\n<p>As you may have rightly guessed, Novavax's core catalyst is a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine. The company's candidate, NVX-CoV2373 (these scientific names just roll off the tongue), demonstrated nearly 90% efficacy in a large U.K. study, and recently reported a 90.4% trial efficacy in the United States. With efficacy rates this high, Novavax could potentially displace <b>Johnson & Johnson</b>'s single-dose vaccine, which offered an efficacy of 72%.</p>\n<p>Though you'd think this was a cut-and-dried success story, Novavax has delayed its emergency-use authorization filings in Europe, the U.S., and U.K. until the third quarter, and it likely won't be at full production capacity till the fourth quarter. Colglazier noted the two last milestones were specific to the spacecraft’s flight control systems and inertial navigation systems.</p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic’s stock rose above $40 a share this week, after a tumultuous start to the year. Shares climbed above $60 in February and then slid to a low near $15 last month before rebounding.</p>\n<p>Notably, Virgin Galactic chief astronaut trainer Beth Moses is the only non-pilot to fly on one of the company’s spaceflights. To date, five Virgin Galactic employees, including four pilots, have become FAA-recognized astronauts – as the U.S. officially views an altitude of 80 kilometers (or about 50 miles) as the boundary to space.</p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic’s spacecraft Unity is designed to hold up to six passengers along with the two pilots. The company has about 600 reservations for tickets on future flights, sold at prices between $200,000 and $250,000 each.</p>\n<p>Virgin Galactic shares soared 38.87% to $55.91 on last Friday in the regular session. As one Wall Street insider said recently in a Bloomberg interview, a “huge unwind” is coming for stay-at-home stocks, including hardware stores and home-goods merchants.</p>\n<p>While some big-name “suburbia” trades are still relatively stable, signs of trouble are already emerging at the fringes. Century Communities CCS, -0.34% and Dream Finders Homes DFH, -2.55%, two mid-tier single family homebuilders, have seen shares crash by double digits over the last month. On the furnishings side, appliance giant Whirlpool Corporation WHR, -0.51% and department store Nordstrom JWN, +2.03% are down sharply from their spring highs.</p>\n<p><b>Here are five big reasons why:</b></p>\n<p><b>1.</b> <b>The upgrade cycle is over</b></p>\n<p>Last summer, white-collar workers who were stuck at home made note of overdue projects and took advantage of being able to easily meet with contractors. But in many ways, this growth is not sustainable.</p>\n<p>Consider the kind of purchases homeowners were making according to data from the NPD Group. Faucets, kitchen cabinets and even toilets were among the most popular products sold in 2020. Needless to say, even the most profligate homeowners aren’t going to follow this upgrade cycle of remodeling kitchens and bathrooms on an annual basis.</p>\n<p>The same is true for furniture and other home goods. Internet giant Comscore recorded the highest visitation to related websites in history in May 2020 with 133 million web surfers shopping for some kind of home goods. Once again, a new couch or lamp is not an annual purchase — so this trend seems unsustainable for much longer.</p>\n<p><b>2. Valuations are stretched</b></p>\n<p>Speaking of post-pandemic peaks for home-goods purveyors, we’ve seen the financials bear out these big increases via boosted profits and sales. However, we’ve also seen the stock of many related merchants surge even more — stretching their valuations from historical norms.</p>\n<p>Take TJX. Currently this discount retailer has a forward price-to-earnings ratio of more than 26, compared with a forward P/E of just 21 in spring 2020. Its trailing price-to-sales ratio is now 2.1 compared with 1.4.</p>\n<p>What’s more, valuations for previous darlings like TJX are out of line with peers, too. Consider the forward P/E of the overall S&P 500 index is 22 right now, and other similar names like Macy’s M, +0.70% and Big Lots BIG, -3.71% actually have forward P/E ratios well under 10. You can argue TJX is unique, of course… but you also may want to be aware of what “fair value” looks like for many other stocks outside fashionable stay-at-home trades right now.</p>\n<p><b>3. Delays and shortages</b></p>\n<p>Future growth from pandemic-fueled peaks in these stocks is not impossible, of course. But given supply chain disruptions it seems highly unlikely. There are a host of reasons for these delays, including overseas shipping delays as well as capacity and output crunches that are affecting many industries, but “stay at home” stocks seem particularly hard hit.</p>\n<p>Home improvement products are simply nowhere to be found, with roughly 94% of builders reporting “at least some serious shortages of appliances” according to the National Association of Home Builders. Another 93% are running short on framing lumber and 87% say it is hard to obtain windows and doors.</p>\n<p>Even if you can get past demand concerns, without the raw materials to get to work it’s very hard to see future growth in this category.</p>\n<p><b>4. Inflationary pressures</b></p>\n<p>For the people who haven’t already ponied up the cash for a contractor or made their peace with extended delays for their expensive new furniture, there is a pretty big disincentive right now for new shoppers: inflation.</p>\n<p>The cost of living as measured by the Consumer Price Index jumped 0.6% in May to run at a 5% annual rate. That was not only higher than expectations, but the fastest pace since the summer of 2008. The inflation risks were so pronounced that the Federal Reserve publicly stated it could move up the schedule for expected interest rate increases to keep the risks under wraps.</p>\n<p>Inflation isn’t always a death knell, of course. But it has historically eroded purchasing power and could curtail some of the spending in “stay at home” stocks that we’ve seen in the last year or so.</p>\n<p><b>5. Home-equity hubris</b></p>\n<p>Speaking of red-hot inflation: In May, the median price for U.S. homes topped $350,000 for the first time ever — up 23.6% from 2020. What’s more, a Realtor.com survey showed roughly a third of selling homeowners expect to get more than their asking price, and roughly the same amount expect an offer within a week of listing.</p>\n<p>Some of this is justifiable. Many articles have been written in recent years about the dearth of supply in attractive markets, and it’s important to acknowledge the remote work of the pandemic has indeed created some disruptive introspection into why people live where they do.</p>\n<p>But here’s where things get dicey: homeowners who have already spent the expected premium on their home’s price well in advance. According to Freddie Mac, about $152.7 billion in equity loans were taken out on U.S. houses last year, a massive increase of 41.7% from 2019 and the highest refinancing cash-out dollar amount since 2007.</p>\n<p>Anyone remember what happened to the real-estate market in 2007? Or the similar sense of seller entitlement from those days?
