On Thursday, they were among the market’s biggest losers.
\n
There’s a good reason for that. Banks generally make money by borrowing money short and lending it out long—andmaking a profit off the spread. When longer-term rates rise faster than shorter-term ones, bank margins generally get better, while the profits deteriorate when the opposite happens.
\n
After Wednesday’s meeting, the 10-year yield got a big bounce—it rose 0.071% to 1.569%—while thetwo-year yield rose0.038 percentage point to 0.203%, putting the spread between the two at 1.366 percentage points. That widening made the financial sector generally, and bank stocks specifically, one of the few sectors to react positively to the Fed’s announcement on Wednesday. TheSPDR S&P Bank ETF(KBE) rose 0.9%, whileJPMorgan Chase(JPM) rose 0.7%, even as theS&P 500fell 0.5%, theDow Jones Industrial Averagedropped 0.8%, and theNasdaq Compositedeclined 0.2%
\n
The market, however, has had a change of heart. The 10-year yield has fallen to 1.498%, while the two-year has risen to 0.238%, putting the gap at 1.26 percentage points. That so-called flattening of the yield curve is bad news for a rate-sensitive sector like banks. The SPDR S&P Bank ETF fell 4.5% on Thurdsay and 1% in premarket trading on Friday. JPMorgan dropped 2.9% on Thursday and is down about 1% on Friday. S&P 500 futures on Friday were down 0.6%, while Dow futures were down 0.8%. Futures for the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4%.
\n
Why the about-face from the market? For yields to keep rising, the economy needs to show that it is recovering quickly. Otherwise, investors are going to bet on a repeat of the slow growth the U.S. experienced after the financial crisis of 2008. With jobless claims missing by a wide margin Thursday—and experiencing the first rise following six weeks of drops—the market decided to focus on the latter, not the former, says Evercore ISI strategist Dennis DeBusschere. “The risk to the economic outlook is the sharp turn to hawkish side, relative to what everyone previously thought, at the same time the labor market isn’t as strong as the Fed assumed,” he writes.
\n
Until that changes, it will be hard for bank stocks to bounce back.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Bank Stocks Were Fed Day Winners. Here are three meme stocks that Wall Street thinks will plunge by more than 20% within the next 12 months.
\n
AMC Entertainment
\n
AMC Entertainment(NYSE:AMC)ranks as the best-performing meme stock of all. Shares of the movie theater operator have skyrocketed close to 2,500% year to date.
\n
The consensus among analysts, though, is that the stock could lose 90% of its current value. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.
\n
But isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.
\n
However, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
\n
Clover Health Investments
\n
Only a few days ago, it looked like Clover Health Investments(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.
\n
Since the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.
\n
Clover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Still, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.
\n
Sundial Growers
\n
At one point earlier this year, Sundial Growers(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.
\n
Analysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.
\n
There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.
\n
Sundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.
\n
However, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. The company can't afford any additional dilution without having to resort to desperate measures to keep its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Meme Stocks Wall Street Predicts Will Plunge More Than 20%
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Meme Stocks Wall Street Predicts Will Plunge More Than 20%\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-19 09:13 GMT+8 fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Meme stocks have been all the rage so far this year. Mobilreturned to profitability during the first quarter, beating top- and bottom-line estimates for the period, as the company recovers from the havoc wreaked on the energy sector by the coronavirus pandemic.\nThe oil giant earned $2.7 billion during the period. The company posted earnings per share of 65 cents excluding items on $59.15 billion in revenue. Wall Street analysts expected the company to earn 59 cents per share on $54.6 billion in revenue, according to estimates from Refinitiv.\nIn the first quarter a year earlier, the company lost $610 million as the impacts of the coronavirus began to weigh. Last quarter, the company posted a $20.1 billion loss, its fourth-straight quarter of losses.\nShares of Exxon were flat during premarket trading on Friday.\n“The strong first quarter results reflect the benefits of higher commodity prices and our focus on structural cost reductions, while prioritizing investments in assets with a low cost of supply,” Darren Woods, Exxon’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.\n“Cash flow from operating activities during the quarter fully covered the dividend and capital investments,” he added.\nExxon’s oil-equivalent production rose 3% quarter-over-quarter to 3.8 million barrels per day. The company said the winter storm that hammered the southern United States in Texas cost the company $600 million across its businesses.\nEnergy is the top-performing S&P 500 sectors this year, and shares of Exxon are up 43% for 2021 through Thursday’s close.\nTo combat lower oil prices over the last year, the company implemented aggressive cost-cutting measures. Throughout the downturn Exxon maintained its commitment to its dividend, which currently stands at 5.9%.\nMore recently, the company has faced pressure from shareholders to shake up its board of directors. As a result the company added three new board members, including known activist investor and ESG proponent Jeffrey Ubben.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"XOM":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1447,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":103567029,"gmtCreate":1619794257561,"gmtModify":1631884667458,"author":{"id":"3573623922395080","authorId":"3573623922395080","name":"Joelchua","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/86d144e798e3c2296cff8b32230b3be8","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573623922395080","authorIdStr":"3573623922395080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wonder if the same will be true for China tech giants?","listText":"Wonder if the same will be true for China tech giants?","text":"Wonder if the same will be true for China tech giants?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/103567029","repostId":"1199870015","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1060,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":103565448,"gmtCreate":1619794189084,"gmtModify":1634209869226,"author":{"id":"3573623922395080","authorId":"3573623922395080","name":"Joelchua","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/86d144e798e3c2296cff8b32230b3be8","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573623922395080","authorIdStr":"3573623922395080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"The legends ","listText":"The legends ","text":"The legends","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/103565448","repostId":"1114554743","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1114554743","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1619790825,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1114554743?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-04-30 21:53","market":"us","language":"en","title":"21 brilliant quotes from legendary investor and polymath Charlie Munger","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1114554743","media":"Yahoo","summary":"Berkshire Hathaway’s (BRK-A,BRK-B) annual shareholders meeting will take place in Los Angeles on May","content":"
Berkshire Hathaway’s (BRK-A,BRK-B) annual shareholders meeting will take place in Los Angeles on May 1, with Warren Buffett reuniting with his long-time business partner Charlie Munger, who is based in California, after a year apart.
\n
In a normal year, thousands of people make the pilgrimage to Omaha, Nebraska, to listen to Buffett, 90, and Munger, 97, answer questions for hours as they sip Coca-Colas and nibble on peanut brittle from See's Candies.
