Analysts see 16% downside on the stock based on current share price levels.</p>\n<ul>\n <li>The most bearish is&nbsp;<b>Citigroup</b>’s Tyler Radke.Forecasting&nbsp;a 41% drop in share price, the analyst’s sell rating is supported first by a slowdown in the company’s commercial business. Also, Citi suggests “low-quality revenues” due to Palantir signing new contracts with small companies that are also the target of its SPAC investments.</li>\n</ul>\n<ul>\n <li>The other bear is&nbsp;<b>Morgan Stanley.</b>Analyst Keith Weiss has recently&nbsp;reiterated&nbsp;his sell rating with a $22 price target. He questioned Palantir’s potential to sustain its 30%-plus growth rate, especially due to Palantir’s strategic investment program being at the core of the growth engine. However, the analyst acknowledged a few positives, like 40% year-over-year billings growth.</li>\n</ul>\n<ul>\n <li>Less bearish is&nbsp;<b>Wolfe Research</b>&nbsp;analyst Alex Zukin and&nbsp;<b>RBC Capital</b>&nbsp;analyst Rishi Jaluria. Both have a neutral rating on PLTR and same price target of $25. Wolfe Research recently&nbsp;raised&nbsp;its target from $20, after Palantir’s solid second quarter earnings, despite the company’s growth challenges being in line with the stock’s valuations. RBC Capital&nbsp;mentioned&nbsp;some bullish points on PLTR, including competitive moat, differentiated technology, and unique go-to-market strategy.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>The cautious bull</b></p>\n<p>The bull case is supported by&nbsp;<b>Jefferies</b>&nbsp;analyst Brent Thill. He&nbsp;maintained&nbsp;his buy recommendation on PLTR with a price target of $31, for modest 7% upside from current levels. The analyst is aware of skepticism regarding Palantir’s investments in SPACs, but also added:</p>\n<blockquote>\n ”We believe that PLTR's commercial initiatives aim to bring its platform to the mass market and that this will take years (not quarters) to execute.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Lastly, he mentioned the commercial partnership with&nbsp;IBM as a good investment in Palantir’s sales force.</p>\n<p><b>Wall Street Memes’ take</b></p>\n<p>Palantir stock has been having a great run since the end of 2020, when the company&nbsp;became&nbsp;an aggressive investor in SPACs . Many of them have nothing to do with&nbsp;corporate fundamentals.</p>\n<p>The issue Wednesday is the expiration of a stock-selling prohibition for investors inLucid’s PIPE, or private investment in public equity. The PIPE lockup expired Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Lucid became a publicly traded company, and raised more than $4 billion, by merging with a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. PIPEs are a common feature of SPAC mergers. The Lucid PIPE raised about $2.5 billion of the total $4.4 billion the company received.</p>\n<p>The quality of the PIPE investors–they can be large institutions–often improves investors’ perceptions about a SPAC merger. Lucid’s PIPE investors included accounts managed by&nbsp;BlackRock(BLK), Fidelity Management &amp; Research,Franklin Templeton,Neuberger Berman, Wellington Management, and others.</p>\n<p>PIPE investors own about 10% of the stock, based on recent filings. The PIPE stock was sold at about $15 a share, so those investors are sitting on nice gains. Lucid stock was at $16.84 in early trading.</p>\n<p>Anytime a large block of stock becomes available to sell, shares can be weak. Investors, and traders, look to get out ahead of any selling by large shareholders. It can create a situation, where the fear of selling creates actual selling.</p>\n<p>None of the PIPE shareholders have to sell, of course. They simply can sell now. Lucid wasn’t immediately available to comment on the PIPE, investors’ plans, or the lockup expiration.</p>\n<p>Coming into Wednesday, Lucid stock was down about 7% over the past three months. The S&amp;P has gained about 8% over the same span.</p>\n<p>Other EV stocks have been weak too.
