Ltd., in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, which makes about $30 million in annual revenue. With the global economic recovery still uneven, “the future is very unclear, so there is not much push to expand capacity,” he adds.</p>\n<p>The combination of higher input prices, uncertainty about export prospects and aweak recoveryin domestic consumer demand meant Chinese manufacturing investment from January to April was 0.4% below the same period in 2019, according to official statistics (comparing to 2019 strips out the distortion of last year’s pandemic data).</p>\n<p>Due to the vast size of China’s manufacturing sector, that poses a risk both to the nation’s growth -- which is currently predicted to reach 8.5% in 2021, according to a Bloomberg tally of economists’ estimates -- and to a global economy that’s grappling with supplyshortagesand rising prices.</p>\n<p><b>Falling Profits</b></p>\n<p>Weaker-than-expected investment could have a “sizable” impact on GDP growth this year, said Citigroup Inc.’s China economist, Li-gang Liu. Lower investment may dent imports of capital goods and equipment from developed economies like Japan and Germany, “which in turn could drag their economic recovery and rebound as well,” he added.</p>\n<p>AnHui HERO Electronic Sci &amp; Tec Co. Ltd. is one of those companies feeling the squeeze. Based in the eastern province of Anhui, the company manufactures capacitors used to make electronic circuits, with sales mainly in the domestic market. Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio Inc.suspended productionat one of its factories last month, due to a shortage of microchips.</p>\n<p>Modern Casting Ltd., which makes iron and steel products in Guangdong, issued a note to clients this month saying it would not be able to meet its current orders due to high raw material costs. A member of staff who answered the phone at the company’s office confirmed the note, but declined to give further details.</p>\n<p><b>Growth Transition</b></p>\n<p>On top of the higher input costs, Chinese companies face abumpy transitiontoward domestic consumer spending to sustain its post-pandemic recovery.</p>\n<p>Exports, China’s strong-suit last year, may begin to slow as vaccine roll-outs cause consumers in wealthy countries to shift spending back to services. Meanwhile, the growth rate of Chinese consumer spending has yet to fully recover.</p>\n<p>Investment sentiment among Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises is below levels seen even in 2018-9 when uncertainties from the U.S.-China trade war were a brake on expansion plans, according to a regular survey of more than 500 Chinese companies by Standard Chartered Plc.</p>\n<p>“Demand is still mainly underpinned by exports, so domestic companies are aware that this is not sustainable,” said Standard Chartered’s China economist, Lan Shen.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/453a27abf3774d649107ae7740baeb78\" tg-width=\"558\" tg-height=\"313\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>While some export-oriented sectors have been pushed to their limits, large amounts of slack remain for manufacturers targeting Chinese consumers due to subdued domestic demand.</p>\n<p>Retail sales growthwas 4.3% in April on a two-year average basis, which strips out base effects from the pandemic, less than half pre-pandemic growth rates. Overall capacity use at China’s manufacturers fell to 77.6% in the first quarter from 78.4% in the previous three months, with the automotive sector hit hardest by overcapacity following three years of declining sales volumes.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9f975d3a125f80d37a6d49f5aa16bcbf\" tg-width=\"558\" tg-height=\"313\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Even for electric vehicles whose sales are surging, most companies have already built their capacity and will now focus on incremental upgrades. “The majority of the investment has been done,” said Jochen Siebert of JSC Automotive Consulting.</p>\n<p>China ordered state-owned companies to expand last year, with their investment growth of 5.3% in 2020 from the prior year easily outstripping the 1% increase in private investment. But for a sustainable pick-up in investment, the market, not the state, needs tofeelconfident.</p>\n<p>Carsten Holz, an expert on Chinese investment statistics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, estimates that privately-owned companies have accounted for 87% of manufacturing investment in 2015, the most recent year of available data. They are more sensitive to input costs.</p>\n<p>“There is a pandemic plus insecurity about future trade given a new U.S. administration, neither of which is conducive to investment that relies on long-term growth prospects,” Holz said.</p>\n<p><b>Mixed Policies</b></p>\n<p>Transportbottlenecksare also a challenge for export-oriented manufacturers. Gordon Gao, who exports gardening products from China, said that he has had to reject 80% of orders this year due to port delays. In one case, an order placed before mid-February could only be shipped three months later when a client finally secured a container.</p>\n<p>Beijing has tried to improve conditions for private companies by ordering a crackdown on speculation to curb commodity prices and easing access to bank loans.</p>\n<p>Yet the government continues to gradually withdraw fiscal and monetary stimulus measures introduced amid the pandemic last year. It set a relatively unambitious target of “above 6%” growth for this year, and the Communist Party’s Politburosignaledlast month it would prioritize reforms to control house prices and debt growth.</p>\n<p>“The policy stance has definitely shifted away from supporting growth and back toward de-risking the financial sector,” said Adam Wolfe, an economist at London-based Absolute Strategy Research. “The risks for economic growth seem tilted to the downside, especially for capital-intensive, construction-linked sectors.”</p>\n<p>For manufacturers such as Li, a longer period of domestic growth and control over input prices will be needed before capacity expansion is on the cards. The company will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker \"OTLY.\"Oatly Group changed its name from Havre Global AB on March 1.There are nine lead underwriters for the filing: Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Credit Suisse, Barclays, Jeffries, BNP Paribas, BofA Securities, Piper Sandler and RBC Capital Markets.Oatly is backed by private-equity group Blackstone Group, as well as celebrity names like Oprah Winfrey and Jay Z who invested $200 million in the company last summer. That investment valued the company at $2 billion at the time, according to The Wall Street Journal .Based in Malmö, Sweden, Oatly has been in the oat milk business for 25 years. The company's product lineup now also includes frozen desserts and \"oatgurt,\" an alternative yogurt.Toni Petersson has been Oatly's chief executive since 2012, and will join the board once the company is publicly-traded.Christian Hanke, a former Nasdaq Stockholm executive, has served as Oatly's chief financial officer since March 2020.The company is going public at a time when climate change and sustainability issues are top of mind for many consumers, particularly younger ones.\"Generation Z and Millennials will become the dominant global generations in the coming years, bringing to the market a new set of values and expectations,\" the company said in its prospectus.\"These combined factors are driving a clear rapid, accelerating growth and influx of new consumers to the plant-based dairy market.\"According to the Plant Based Foods Association and Good Foods Institute, plant-based-food sales reached $7 billion in 2020.Consumer Insights data quoted in the prospectus says the plant-based milk category will grow 20% to 25% over the next three years.Oatly is focused on its role in helping to transform the food industry in order to be better for the environment and meet the health needs of its customers. The company points out that substituting a cup of Oatly for a cup of cow's milk reduces greenhouse gas emissions, land use and energy consumption.Tastewise, which provides food and beverage data and intelligence, said in a December 2020 report that \"plant-based everything\" will be one of the top 10 U.S. trends for this year.\"The number one reason consumers turn to plant-based food and beverage? Health,\" the report said.\"Plant-based is no longer just an 'alternative' to meat, but rather a significantcategory in itself.\"Oatly's key markets are Sweden, Germany and the U.K., though its products were available in 60,000 retail stores and 32,200 coffee shops around the world as of December 31, 2020. Among the places where customers can find Oatly is Starbucks $(SBUX)$, where demand was so high there was a shortage soon after the coffee chain introduced beverages made with the item.COVID-19 has impacted Oatly's business as lockdowns around the world limited access to restaurants, bars and other dining establishments.In 2020, Oatly had revenue of $421.4 million, up from $204.0 million the year before. However, the company reported a loss of $60.4 million \"reflecting our continued investment in production, brand awareness, new markets and product development,\" the prospectus said.Oatly is classified as an \"emerging growth company,\" which means it does not have to make the same disclosures required of bigger public companies. A business remains an emerging growth company until it reaches a number of milestones, including annual revenue of more than $1.07 billion.Oatly warns that it has reported losses over the last \"several\" years and expects operating and capital expenses to rise \"substantially.\"\"Our expansion efforts may take longer or prove more expensive than we anticipate, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we may not succeed in increasing our revenue and margins sufficiently to offset the anticipated higher expenses,\" the company said in its prospectus.\"We incur significant expenses in researching and developing our innovative products, building out our production and manufacturing facilities, obtaining and storing ingredients and other products and marketing the products we offer.\"Here are five more things to know about Oatly ahead of its public debut:Oatly will not pay a dividend for the \"foreseeable future.\" The company plans to use the proceeds from the offering as working capital, for incremental growth, including expansion, and other general purposes.Coffee provided a gateway for Oatly in the U.S. Oatly arrived in the U.S. in 2017. The company says it \"focused on targeting coffee's tastemakers, professional baristas at independent coffee shops\" as a way to enter the market.\"By December 31, 2020, Oatly was in more than 7,500 retail shops and 10,000 coffee shops in the U.S. Revenue in 2020 totaled $100 million in the U.S.Oatly can also be found in 11,000 coffee and tea shops in China, and at more than 6,000 retail and specialty shops across the country, including thousands of Starbucks locations.Limited oat supply could have a financial impact. Oatly depends on five suppliers for the oats it uses, purchasing this ingredient through millers in Sweden, Denmark, the U.S. and Belgium.\"We have in the past experienced interruptions in the supply of oats from one supplier that resulted in delays in delivery to us,\" the company said, noting that its oat supply is also vulnerable to natural disasters such as drought or floods.\"We could experience similar delays in the future from any of these suppliers.\"The company also depends on select suppliers for enzymes, including one supplier that provides an enzyme for some of Oatly's products, including Barista Edition oat milk.The main components of the company's products are manufactured in four primary facilities as of March 2021, which could also be a problem if something significant happens at any one facility.The dairy market is highly competitive. Oatly identifies conventional dairy companies, including Dean Foods Inc. (DFODQ) and Lactalis as competitors, as well as the growing array of plant-based dairy alternative companies that are entering the market, including soy, almond, hemp and cashew milk brands.All of these companies are competing for a finite number of retail stores, coffee shops, foodservice clients and consumers.\"In order for us to not only maintain our market position, but also to continue to grow and acquire more consumers, some of which may be switching from traditional dairy to plant-based alternatives, we must continue to provide delicious, high-quality products, and consumers must believe in our vision for a food system that is better for people and the planet,\" the company said.Oatly's marketing and COVID-19 might be a hurdle to growth.
