Investors shouldn’t expect much good news,","content":"
Boeing reports second-quarter earnings Wednesday morning. Investors shouldn’t expect much good news, but the results shouldn’t matter too much for the stock.
\n
For the quarter, Wall Street is looking for an 81-cent-per-share loss from $16.5 billion in sales. For the year-ago quarter, Boeing (ticker: BA) reported an adjusted loss of almost $5 a share from $11.8 billion in sales.
\n
Those aren’t great results, but the commercial aerospace giant is still digging out from the dual crises of the 737 MAX and Covid-19. Things are so challenging for the company, it could report almost anything without shocking investors.
\n
“There are enough items that are unknown that something could be unexpected…. More than likely, it will miss,” Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau tells Barron’s. “Cash burn [will be] in focus.” Wall Street expects Boeing to burn through another $2.8 billion in cash after burning through $3.7 billion in the first quarter.
\n
In the second quarter of 2018, before Covid-19 and the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX in March 2019 after two deadly crashes within five months, Boeing earned $3.33 a share from $24.3 billion in sales. Free cash flow came in at $4.3 billion. Numbers like that are still far down the road.
\n
Commercial air travel is improving, though. Over the past week, U.S. air travel was down about 21% compared with the same week in 2019. Three months ago, air travel in the U.S. was down about 42% compared with the same week in April 2019.
\n
That improvement won’t be reflected in Boeing numbers. “Boeing’s 2Q deliveries numbers were poor, and it announced another cut to 787 production,” wrote Vertical Research Partners analyst Rob Stallard in a preview report. “This is a setback, with some flow through to key suppliers like [ Sprit AeroSystems ] and [ Hexcel ]. We think Boeing is set to announce another monster 2Q loss.” He projects cash burn of about $2.8 billion, in line with the Wall Street consensus estimate.
\n
Stallard and Windau both rate Boeing shares Hold. Stallard’s price target is $153 a share. Windau doesn’t publish price targets for stocks he covers.
\n
Stallard notes in his report that demand is improving, “particularly for new narrow body aircraft.”
\n
What investors will want to hear about is a new plane to be developed by Boeing. CEO Dave Calhoun might not be ready to tip his hand yet, though. Boeing is investigating what it calls the NMA, or new medium-size aircraft, but details of size and engine technology—and when it might developed—haven’t been discussed with investors in detail. What’s more, the NMA hasn’t really been addressed on an earnings conference call since January.
\n
What happens to the stock after earnings is anyone’s guess. Over the past eight quarters, shares have dropped five times and risen three times. Options markets imply the stock will move about 3%, up or down, following earnings.
\n
That isn’t too much for all the turmoil faced by the company over the past 24 months.
\n
Boeing stock is down 1%, at $223.61, in recent trading. Year to date, Boeing shares are up about 5%, trailing behind comparable gains of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average. On their face, they have no effect whatsoever on a company's value -- they simply change the number of outstanding shares a company has. Yet most investors take stock splits as highly encouraging. Witness the recent hype over NVIDIA's (NASDAQ:NVDA) decision to split its stock, and you'll get a sense of how much attention companies get when they make these moves.
\n
NVIDIA's move came years after its previous stock split, and there are plenty of stocks that have gone a long time without taking such action. In fact, many companies have never split their stock, and I won't speculate here about whether some of those high-flying leaders will change their minds now. But among stocks that have a history of past splits, a few in particular stand out as being ready to make a move soon.
\n
\n
1. Microsoft
\n
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) just hit a major milestone, rising above the $2 trillion mark in market capitalization. It became just the second U.S. stock to reach that level.
\n
Microsoft used to split its stock regularly, but its share price got stuck in the doldrums for a long time following the tech bust in the early 2000s. It took Microsoft roughly 15 years to return to all-time highs after the decline, and it wasn't until early 2019 that the share price climbed above the $100 mark for good. Now, the stock fetches about $270 per share.
\n
Historically, Microsoft has tended to do stock splits when its share price moved to between $150 and $200 per share. While many companies have moved away from frequent splits over the past 20 years, it's not surprising to see Microsoft having chosen to wait this time around. However, Microsoft is a Dow component, and its stock price determines its influence in the price-weighted index. With Microsoft having about double the influence of the larger Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), there's definitely some appeal to a 2-for-1 split that would put the two tech giants on more of an even keel within the Dow.
\n
2. Intuitive Surgical
\n
In 2017, robotic surgery company Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) did something that had fallen out of favor when it made its own 3-for-1 stock split. The split didn't entirely lead to a huge run of similar moves from other companies, but it did mark somewhat of a turning point as far as company perception of stock splits was concerned.
\n
Intuitive Surgical came up with a novel reason for its stock split four years ago. In addition to the usual comments about making share prices more affordable for retail investors, the company added that it was useful to be more precise in awarding stock-based compensation to employees. As prices rose, it was harder to dole out stock or options awards effectively. The same might well be happening now, as Intuitive has recovered strongly from weak industry conditions and rewarded long-term investors handsomely.
\n
The last split from Intuitive Surgical came as the stock was approaching the $1,000 mark. With shares now fetching more than $900 per share, the same reasons for splitting appear to apply today.
\n
3. Netflix
\n
Finally, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) rounds out this list of potential stock split candidates. With a price at around $530 per share, the stock isn't quite at levels that have led to past splits. However, it wouldn't be unreasonable for the streaming video giant to move forward with a split at current prices.
\n
Netflix's most recent stock split came in 2015. The 7-for-1 split came as Netflix had rocketed past the $700 per share mark, and it proved to be one of multiple 7-for-1 splits that seemed to come into vogue in the mid-2010s.
\n
Fundamentally, Netflix's business is strong enough to support another split. Subscriptions soared in 2020, and the company could well be in position to boost its monthly subscription prices once again in the near future. On their face, they have no effect whatsoever on a company's value -- they simply change the number of outstanding shares a company has. Yet most investors take stock splits as highly encouraging. Witness the recent hype over NVIDIA's (NASDAQ:NVDA) decision to split its stock, and you'll get a sense of how much attention companies get when they make these moves.\nNVIDIA's move came years after its previous stock split, and there are plenty of stocks that have gone a long time without taking such action. In fact, many companies have never split their stock, and I won't speculate here about whether some of those high-flying leaders will change their minds now. But among stocks that have a history of past splits, a few in particular stand out as being ready to make a move soon.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Microsoft\nMicrosoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) just hit a major milestone, rising above the $2 trillion mark in market capitalization. It became just the second U.S. stock to reach that level.\nMicrosoft used to split its stock regularly, but its share price got stuck in the doldrums for a long time following the tech bust in the early 2000s. It took Microsoft roughly 15 years to return to all-time highs after the decline, and it wasn't until early 2019 that the share price climbed above the $100 mark for good. Now, the stock fetches about $270 per share.\nHistorically, Microsoft has tended to do stock splits when its share price moved to between $150 and $200 per share. While many companies have moved away from frequent splits over the past 20 years, it's not surprising to see Microsoft having chosen to wait this time around. However, Microsoft is a Dow component, and its stock price determines its influence in the price-weighted index. With Microsoft having about double the influence of the larger Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), there's definitely some appeal to a 2-for-1 split that would put the two tech giants on more of an even keel within the Dow.\n2. Intuitive Surgical\nIn 2017, robotic surgery company Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) did something that had fallen out of favor when it made its own 3-for-1 stock split. The split didn't entirely lead to a huge run of similar moves from other companies, but it did mark somewhat of a turning point as far as company perception of stock splits was concerned.\nIntuitive Surgical came up with a novel reason for its stock split four years ago. In addition to the usual comments about making share prices more affordable for retail investors, the company added that it was useful to be more precise in awarding stock-based compensation to employees. As prices rose, it was harder to dole out stock or options awards effectively. The same might well be happening now, as Intuitive has recovered strongly from weak industry conditions and rewarded long-term investors handsomely.\nThe last split from Intuitive Surgical came as the stock was approaching the $1,000 mark. With shares now fetching more than $900 per share, the same reasons for splitting appear to apply today.\n3. Netflix\nFinally, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) rounds out this list of potential stock split candidates. With a price at around $530 per share, the stock isn't quite at levels that have led to past splits. However, it wouldn't be unreasonable for the streaming video giant to move forward with a split at current prices.\nNetflix's most recent stock split came in 2015. The 7-for-1 split came as Netflix had rocketed past the $700 per share mark, and it proved to be one of multiple 7-for-1 splits that seemed to come into vogue in the mid-2010s.\nFundamentally, Netflix's business is strong enough to support another split. Subscriptions soared in 2020, and the company could well be in position to boost its monthly subscription prices once again in the near future. Even with competition getting fierce in streaming video, Netflix has held its own with its wide selection of original and third-party content and its first-mover advantage.\nIt might take another leg up to motivate Netflix to do a stock split. However, that upward movement could come sooner than many think.\nDon't fret about splits\nInvestors like the short-term bump that often comes when a company announces a stock split. Just remember that split announcements don't have any true effect on a stock's value, and it'll leave you thinking about stock splits more as a sign of business optimism than as anything particularly meaningful about a stock.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"ISRG":0.9,"MSFT":0.9,"NFLX":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":699,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":121066122,"gmtCreate":1624445085966,"gmtModify":1634006075201,"author":{"id":"4087463795393260","authorId":"4087463795393260","name":"Dhiran","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6dc0fab3442b0ae4e189a5da3a919dc9","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4087463795393260","idStr":"4087463795393260"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Very tempting ","listText":"Very tempting ","text":"Very tempting","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/121066122","repostId":"1127447179","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":667,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":121068481,"gmtCreate":1624445066443,"gmtModify":1634006075422,"author":{"id":"4087463795393260","authorId":"4087463795393260","name":"Dhiran","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6dc0fab3442b0ae4e189a5da3a919dc9","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4087463795393260","idStr":"4087463795393260"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Very tempting ","listText":"Very tempting ","text":"Very tempting","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/121068481","repostId":"1127447179","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":583,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":123772253,"gmtCreate":1624441863872,"gmtModify":1634006105228,"author":{"id":"4087463795393260","authorId":"4087463795393260","name":"Dhiran","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6dc0fab3442b0ae4e189a5da3a919dc9","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4087463795393260","idStr":"4087463795393260"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great infomation for new investors","listText":"Great infomation for new investors","text":"Great infomation for new investors","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/123772253","repostId":"1115716980","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1115716980","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1624439805,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1115716980?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-23 17:16","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Bitcoin briefly crashed again, wiping out 2021 gains. It erased its gains for 2021 before recovering to trade at $32,481.93, according to CoinGecko, a crypto market data site.
\n
Bitcoin at one point shed more than 10% to trade as low as $29,154.73, losing more than half its value since hitting a record high in April. That's after a tremendous performance in 2020, with the digital currency surging more than 300%.
\n
Other cryptos joined the sell-off before paring losses, with ethereum, the second-biggest digital currency by market value, slumping more than 5%. Now it's ticked up 0.7% over the past 24 hours.
\n
The selling also spilled over to smaller coins like Dogecoin, a meme-inspired crypto that at one point tumbled more than 25% to erase all of its gains since April. It came under pressure in May after tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has driven traders into frenzies by mentioning cryptos at times, said Tesla will stop using Bitcoin as a form of payment over concerns of the cryptocurrency's impact on fossil fuels.
\n
Since then, cryptos have gyrated as coins such as ethereum typically to move in tandem with bitcoin.
\n
In early June, bitcoin fell further amid concerns of its use in the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack.
\n
Bitcoin, for instance, briefly touched $40,000 last week and fell again Monday after China's central bank deepened a crackdown on cryptocurrencies. China's central bank said it ordered some banks and payment firms, including China Construction Bank and Alipay, to crack down further on cryptocurrency trading.
\n
Bitcoin shed more than 10% on Monday, its largest one-day drop in over a month.
\n
How much have Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin lost in value?
\n
With Tuesday’s losses, bitcoin has slid more than 50% from its all-time high above $64,000 in mid-April. To be sure, bitcoin is still up more than 200% over the past 12 months.
\n
Ethereum has shed nearly 57% from its all time high of $4,356.99 in May while Dogecoin has shed more than 70% since it touched a record of about 73 cents last month, according to CoinGecko.
\n
Is more pain to come?
\n
Cryptos could be poised for further declines based on a closely watched indicator, according to technical analysts.
\n
Over the weekend, bitcoin formed a death cross, a chart pattern that signals the potential for a major sell-off. Bitcoin’s average price over the past 50 days fell below its 200-day moving average, which means there could be more pressure on the digital coin.
\n
\"Long-term bitcoin bulls are getting nervous as a break of $30,000 could see a tremendous amount of momentum selling,\" Edward Moya, senior market analyst at foreign-exchange trading service OANDA, said in a recent note. \"Many traders have waited for one more push lower, which could see crypto traders wait for a plunge towards the $20,000-$25,000 area.\"
\n
Elon Musk, Snoops Dogg and Mark Cuban love Dogecoin. Should you?:How to stay safe when investing in cryptocurrency
\n
Some analysts think the May sell-off in bitcoin weakened institutional demand, which is likely to keep prices under pressure in the near term.
\n
\"There is little doubt that the boom and bust dynamics of the past weeks represent a setback to the institutional adoption of crypto markets and in particular of Bitcoin and Ethereum,” JPMorgan strategist Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou said in a report earlier this month.
\n
Still, some are using the recent decline in bitcoin as a buying opportunity. On Monday, MicroStrategy, enterprise software company, said it scooped up an additional $489 million worth of bitcoin, bringing its total holdings to 105,085 bitcoins.
\n
Are cryptos right for you?
\n
First-time investors should proceed with caution. Piling all of your nest egg into something as volatile as cryptocurrencies poses big risks to your retirement, experts say. Wealth managers and finance experts have long been skeptical of these speculative investments for amateur investors due to their extreme swings.
\n
In 2013, bitcoin began trading around $13 and spiked to more than $1,000 by December. In late 2017, the digital token surged to nearly $20,000, before crashing to almost $3,000 the following year. What followed was a dizzying rise to above $64,000 in April 2021.
\n
Dogecoin has seen similar booms and swoons. It has ridden a similar Reddit-driven wave as stocks like GameStop and AMC in recent months, accelerated by a series of tweets by Musk, who was pumping the cryptocurrency.
\n
Cryptos are now in 401(k)s:Are they the right investment for your nest egg?
\n
Even with the latest declines, the sharp rise in the value of bitcoin earlier this year has some analysts worried about a potential bubble in the cryptocurrency market, with bitcoin's price – at one point – more than doubling since the start of 2021.
\n
About 81% of fund managers polled in a recent Bank of America survey in June said bitcoin was still a bubble. That’s up from about 75% of managers who said so in May.
\n
“While there's no guarantee that Bitcoin will recover this time, those who believe in its long-term future may well see this decline as an opportunity to invest more,” James Royal, analyst at Bankrate.com, said in a note.
\n
\"Cryptocurrency traders, especially individuals, need to know the risks of what they own,\" Royal added. \"In some cases, the risks could be a complete loss of their investment.”
","source":"lsy1624439865427","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Bitcoin briefly crashed again, wiping out 2021 gains.
