The stock’s ascent began after Dec. 21, 2020 — starting from there, the stock is up over 1,600%.</p>\n<p>However, it’s worth noting that OCGN stock was trading well below one dollar before it stitched a partnership with&nbsp;<b>Bharat Biotech</b>. The companies announced plans to begin manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines in the U.S. on Dec. 22 last year.</p>\n<p>Beyond the news of this partnership, there has been little to cheer for investors. OCGN stock traded at all-time highs of $18.77 in February and reached slightly lower peaks in May and November. The stock traded at $5.12 at the start of Dec. 23.</p>\n<p>Ocugen will continue to underperform going forward. Even after the downtrend in the last few months, OCGN stock should be avoided.</p>\n<p>Let’s talk about the reasons to be bearish.</p>\n<p>FDA Approval Remains Elusive</p>\n<p><b>Pfizer</b>(NYSE:<b><u>PFE</u></b>) and&nbsp;<b>Moderna</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>MRNA</u></b>) have been leaders in the vaccine race in the U.S. In a country where more than 70% of the population has already been vaccinated, Ocugen has yet to secure an approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.</p>\n<p>Back in June, the biotech company’s&nbsp;application for emergency use authorization&nbsp;was rejected by the FDA. The recommendation by the FDA was to file for a biologics license application, which implies full approval.</p>\n<p>In November, Ocugen announced that the FDA has “issued a clinical hold&nbsp;on the Company’s Investigational New Drug application (IND) to evaluate the COVID-19 vaccine candidate.” The FDA will be identifying the specific deficiencies that form a basis for the clinical hold. Once Ocugen addresses these deficiencies, there will be some progress.</p>\n<p>The key point is that it’s been over a year since Ocugen announced the partnership with Bharat Biotech. The company has still been unsuccessful from an approval perspective.</p>\n<p>In July, Ocugen had also initiated a&nbsp;rolling submission to Health Canada&nbsp;for the vaccine. There is no positive news on that front either.</p>\n<p>Let’s imagine a scenario where Ocugen receives an approval for vaccine use in Q1 2022. This is very unlikely. However, even in an optimistic case scenario, Ocugen needs to compete in a market where vaccination percentage is high. There is unlikely to be a case for strong revenue and cash flow growth.</p>\n<p>Can Omicron Provide a Lifeline for OCGN Stock?</p>\n<p>The omicron variant has been a cause of concern for governments globally. Ocugen and partner Bharat Biotech are&nbsp;currently studying the effectiveness&nbsp;of the vaccine against the variant.</p>\n<p>If the vaccine proves to be effective, can it be a game-changer for Ocugen? Most likely, no.</p>\n<p>First and foremost, Moderna has announced that its Covid-19 booster&nbsp;increases neutralizing antibodies 37-fold&nbsp;against Omicron variant.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, Pfizer has announced that a third dose increases the “neutralizing antibody by 25-fold&nbsp;compared to two doses against the Omicron variant.”</p>\n<p>Clearly, the leading vaccine makers have an edge. Even if Ocugen announces that its vaccine is effective against the omicron variant, the stock is unlikely to trend higher.</p>\n<p>People who have already taken two shots of Moderna or Pfizer are unlikely to pursue a booster shot with Ocugen. Additionally, Ocugen is still struggling for approval.</p>\n<p>It’s also worth noting that Ocugen needs to share revenue with Bharat Biotech. The visibility for healthy cash flows is therefore very unlikely.</p>\n<p>OCGN Stock Will Trend Lower</p>\n<p>OCGN stock is likely to continue trending lower in the coming months. Without an approval, the company is rapidly losing out on any revenue and cash flow potential.</p>\n<p>The company is&nbsp;building a pipeline of drugs&nbsp;for various indications. However, the pipeline for various indications is still at a pre-clinical stage.</p>\n<p>The stock trend will therefore be dictated by the outcome of Covid-19 vaccine approval and revenue potential. The companies announced plans to begin manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines in the U.S. on Dec. 22 last year.\nBeyond the news of this partnership, there has been little to cheer for investors. OCGN stock traded at all-time highs of $18.77 in February and reached slightly lower peaks in May and November. The stock traded at $5.12 at the start of Dec. 23.\nOcugen will continue to underperform going forward. Even after the downtrend in the last few months, OCGN stock should be avoided.\nLet’s talk about the reasons to be bearish.\nFDA Approval Remains Elusive\nPfizer(NYSE:PFE) and Moderna(NASDAQ:MRNA) have been leaders in the vaccine race in the U.S. In a country where more than 70% of the population has already been vaccinated, Ocugen has yet to secure an approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.\nBack in June, the biotech company’s application for emergency use authorization was rejected by the FDA. The recommendation by the FDA was to file for a biologics license application, which implies full approval.\nIn November, Ocugen announced that the FDA has “issued a clinical hold on the Company’s Investigational New Drug application (IND) to evaluate the COVID-19 vaccine candidate.” The FDA will be identifying the specific deficiencies that form a basis for the clinical hold. Once Ocugen addresses these deficiencies, there will be some progress.\nThe key point is that it’s been over a year since Ocugen announced the partnership with Bharat Biotech. The company has still been unsuccessful from an approval perspective.\nIn July, Ocugen had also initiated a rolling submission to Health Canada for the vaccine. There is no positive news on that front either.\nLet’s imagine a scenario where Ocugen receives an approval for vaccine use in Q1 2022. This is very unlikely. However, even in an optimistic case scenario, Ocugen needs to compete in a market where vaccination percentage is high. There is unlikely to be a case for strong revenue and cash flow growth.\nCan Omicron Provide a Lifeline for OCGN Stock?\nThe omicron variant has been a cause of concern for governments globally. Ocugen and partner Bharat Biotech are currently studying the effectiveness of the vaccine against the variant.\nIf the vaccine proves to be effective, can it be a game-changer for Ocugen? Most likely, no.\nFirst and foremost, Moderna has announced that its Covid-19 booster increases neutralizing antibodies 37-fold against Omicron variant.\nFurthermore, Pfizer has announced that a third dose increases the “neutralizing antibody by 25-fold compared to two doses against the Omicron variant.”\nClearly, the leading vaccine makers have an edge. Even if Ocugen announces that its vaccine is effective against the omicron variant, the stock is unlikely to trend higher.\nPeople who have already taken two shots of Moderna or Pfizer are unlikely to pursue a booster shot with Ocugen. Additionally, Ocugen is still struggling for approval.\nIt’s also worth noting that Ocugen needs to share revenue with Bharat Biotech. The visibility for healthy cash flows is therefore very unlikely.\nOCGN Stock Will Trend Lower\nOCGN stock is likely to continue trending lower in the coming months. Without an approval, the company is rapidly losing out on any revenue and cash flow potential.\nThe company is building a pipeline of drugs for various indications. However, the pipeline for various indications is still at a pre-clinical stage.\nThe stock trend will therefore be dictated by the outcome of Covid-19 vaccine approval and revenue potential. At the very least, you could haveexpecteditin the<i>top 10holdings.</i></p>\n<p>Instead, though, MEME has names like&nbsp;<b>ContextLogic</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>WISH</u></b>),<b>Digital World Acquisition</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>DWAC</u></b>) — which is actually a meme name right now — and&nbsp;<b>Advanced Micro Devices</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMD</u></b>) in its top five.Meanwhile,<b>&nbsp;AMC Entertainment</b>(NYSE:<b><u>AMC</u></b>) is lower on the list alongside names like&nbsp;<b>Roku</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>ROKU</u></b>).</p>\n<p>To be honest, I would have expected names like GameStop, AMC and&nbsp;<b>Robinhood</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>HOOD</u></b>) to be at the top of the list here. Still, one has to wonder if the&nbsp;<i>sentiment</i>&nbsp;around meme stocks presents more risk than opportunity at this point.</p>\n<p>Investing isn’t about sniffing out which stock&nbsp;<b>Reddit’s</b>&nbsp;r/WallStreetBets group will try to squeeze short next. While we don’t exactly live in Benjamin Graham’s world anymore — the famous fundamental investor — it doesn’t mean the fundamentals have gone completely out the window.</p>\n<p>With a meme ETF hitting Wall Street, it just feels like excess. And if that’s the case, GME stock and its peers could have more downside in store.</p>\n<p><b>Breaking Down GameStop</b></p>\n<p>In reality, GameStop is a famous short squeeze away from obscurity. The stock had been bleeding lower and lower over the years, with little hope in the retailer turning things around.The financials weren’t great and neither were the have-nots of the industry. It looked to be another broken retailer that was swept up in the secular shift toward e-commerce.</p>\n<p>With the short squeeze in 2021, GameStop found itself making new all-time highs. Yet, GME stock has cruised to levels that the fundamentals simply do not justify. Unless the company can make a major pivot (and it can!), it should eventually correct back to its prior trajectory.</p>\n<p>GameStop has used the spike in its share price to bolster its financials and try to get back on the right track. That’s smart.As of the&nbsp;last earnings report, it ended the quarter with cash and equivalents of $1.41 billion and no debt “other than a $46.2 million low-interest, unsecured term loan associated with the French government’s response to COVID-19.”</p>\n<p>That said, we also saw a year-over-year (YOY) decline in software sales and an increase in hardware sales. That’s generally the opposite of what investors want to see from a business in transition.</p>\n<p>Further,estimates&nbsp;call for revenue of $5.77 billion this year, followed by a dip down to $5.64 billion next year. That leaves GME stock trading at just over 2 times revenue — roughly double the&nbsp;sector’s current price-sales valuation.At the same time, GameStop will not be profitable this year and is not forecast to be profitable next year, either.</p>\n<p>Do you see where it’s getting tough to justify some of the loftiness here?</p>\n<p><b>Bottom Line on GME Stock</b></p>\n<p>If GME stock were to trade at 1 times revenue, it would leave it with a market capitalization of about $5.7 billion. That’s just more than 50% below its recent $11.8 billion market capitalization. If GameStop doesn’t have the short-squeeze catalyst in play, then<i>what is&nbsp;the catalyst?</i></p>\n<p>Do I want to come out and say GME stock is set to dip 50% from current levels? Not really. The research agency estimated December’s seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) for total light-vehicle sales to be 11.9 million units, down 27% from a year ago.\nHow Will Legacy Players Fare?:Both General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co are expected to report year-on-year declines in December sales due to the low base from a year ago when volumes were hit due to the pandemic and dealers were struggling with inventories.\nThe sales numbers are expected to rise over November for both GM and Ford.\nGM’s December sales are expected to reach 168,640 vehicles, a decline of 42.9% on a year-on-year basis, and a rise of 21% over November.\nFord is expected to report a decline of 20% to 166,547 vehicles in December, compared to a year ago, and a rise of 5.8% over last month.\nOn a quarterly basis, Ford is expected to sell a total of 498,428 vehicles, a drop of 7.5% on a year-on-year basis but a rise of 25.3% over the third quarter.\nGM is expected to report total sales of 441,426 vehicles in the fourth quarter, implying declines of 42.5% year-on-year and down 0.4% quarter-on-quarter, the report noted.\nHistorically, December has been a busy month for automakers as they rush to close the calendar year-end targets. This year, automakers around the world have been battling chip shortages to ensure a steady and timely supply to dealerships and customers.
