POTENTIAL REASONS FOR FRIDAYS SELLOFF
On Friday, February 21, 2025, the U.S. stock market experienced a significant decline, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping over 700 points, marking its worst day of the year. Several factors contributed to this downturn:
1. Weak Economic Indicators:
• Consumer Sentiment: The University of Michigan reported a decline in consumer sentiment for the second consecutive month in February, reaching its lowest level since November 2023. This decline was attributed to concerns over tariffs and rising inflation expectations.
• Existing Home Sales: January saw a larger-than-expected drop in existing home sales, influenced by elevated financing costs and high property prices, which have reduced affordability.
• Services Sector Contraction: The U.S. services sector, which accounts for approximately 70% of the economy, experienced an unexpected contraction, its first in over two years.
As we know markets don't like uncertainty, this may have led to the large sell offs. Furthermore we are at ATHs so most people are happy to take their profits as opposed to losing their gains.
