You can share your thoughts with us at markets.research@thomsonreuters.com

MEME STOCKS LOSING STEAM, QUAD WITCHING COULD MAKE IT WORSE (0930 EDT/1330 GMT)

A basket tracking some of the most popular meme stocks is down by 17% over the past week, analysts at Vanda Research said.

Indeed, such stocks as AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc

, GameStop Corp , Clover Health Investments Corp

and Workhorse Group are all under pressure in the early throes of Wednesday's regular session after a wild ride over the past few weeks.

The current meme stock bubble has been running for three weeks now, just about the same time as the last bubble in January. With retail flows surpassing the peak of Q1 and given the amount of risk embedded in these investments, retail investors will rush to the exit unless there's an immediate rally, Vanda Researchers said.

This week's quadruple witching event could make things even more complicated for meme stocks. In the last couple of days open interest on call options on meme stocks has been declining as traders take profits before the expiry. In response, market makers are unwinding their long-stock hedges, creating a negative feedback loop, analysts added.

Quadruple witching refers to the simultaneous expiration of single-stock options, index options, single-stock futures and index futures, which happens on the third Friday in March, June, September and December.

\"All manias run out of energy at some point and this is no different,\" said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities in New York.

\"It hasn't completely disappeared but overall volumes are starting to peter out and that's just the natural course of events.\"

(Medha Singh)

*****

NASDAQ VS COMMODITIES: TIME FOR TECH TO STEP UP? (0900 EDT/1300 GMT)

The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite relative to the Refinitiv/CoreCommodity CRB index appears to once again be at an important juncture on the charts.

The Nasdaq/CRB ratio, on a weekly basis, hit a record high of 80.54 in early November of last year. Since then, however, the Nasdaq has underperformed \"stuff.\" In fact, the ratio hit a 14-month low in early June:

Now nearly 67, the ratio is flirting with what appears to be significant support in the form of a log-scale trend line from its 2011 trough, now around 65.65, as well as the 100-week moving average $(WMA.AU)$, now around 64.40.

The ratio did suffer a one-week closing violation of the support line in late 2018. However, with the market's December bottom that year, it quickly reversed to the upside without breaking the 100-WMA. The trendline then contained weakness in 2019, and early 2020.

Of note, the ratio has been on a record run vs its 100-WMA. In fact, it is on pace for its 499th straight weekly close above this long-term moving average. This current run above the 100-WMA dwarfs the ratio's 155-week streak that lasted into the Y2K tech bubble top.

Thus, in the face of this week's event risks in the form of today's FOMC results , and Friday's quadruple witching , it may now be time for tech to once again step up, in order to underpin a renewed Nasdaq advance relative to commodities.

A ratio weekly close below support can add credence to the view that a sea change in trend is underway. However, retail investors have bid up the stock, and shares are more than double their May low of $136.50. Meanwhile, in the first two hours of June 8, the price has risen nearly 17% to a high of $344.66 and then dropped even lower than its starting price.
\n
Many investors are hoping that a digital transformation will help the company mount a much-needed turnaround — GameStop has a long-term vision of transforming from a brick-and-mortar retail company into a digital enterprise.
\n
However, this is easier said than done.
\n
As I have mentionedin prior articles, GameStop was struggling long before the pandemic. The top line is consistently declining over the last five years as it tries to keep up withSony(NYSE:SONY),Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT), andAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN), competitors who are increasingly relying on digital innovation for their future success. Not the case when it comes to GME.
\n
Hence, even though the temptation to join in is there, I will still advise you to stay miles away from this one.
\n
Flawed Fundamentals
\n
Through the end of 2020, GameStop’s sales reportedlydropped more than 30% per quarter, dropping in 10 out of 11 of its previous quarters. In the last decade, the video game retailer has had several years with negative revenue growth. If we take a look at the data from the last 12 quarters, GME has reported a “positive” surprisejust four times. GME had an operating income of $648 million in 2015. Last year, the company was sitting at a $238 million operating loss.
\n
In many ways, GME reminds me ofDish Network’s(NASDAQ:DISH) Blockbuster. There was a time when it looked like the home movie provider could do no wrong. However, it has become a cautionary tale of not evolving with the times. In 2004 then CEO of Blockbuster John Antioco understood the need to invest in an online platform. However, he faced stiff opposition from activist investor Carl Icahn who disagreed and removed him. In five years, the company was bankrupt.
\n
Understandably, if GME wants to avoid this future, it must think outside of the box and focus on building its digital platform. The good thing is that when George E. Sherman took the helm as GameStop’s new CEO in April 2019, he had two things in mind: reducing costs on the brick-and-mortar business and expanding the digital platform.
\n
The strategy is working. On Jan. 11, the video gamereportedworldwide sales results reflecting a 4.8% increase in comparable-store sales and a 309% increase in e-commerce sales.
\n
But the company’s e-commerce setup still does not compare in any way to Amazon or Sony.
\n
Beginning of the End
\n
The biggest question surrounding GME stock is whether it is best to count your blessings and exit. Shares are still up over 80% in a month, so Redditors still like this stock — GME andAMC(NYSE:AMC) have traded spots several times for the most popular choice among members of the platform.
\n
However, you have to ask yourself where GME stock will be in five years. Our very own Chris Markochwrote a great articleaboutDisney(NYSE:DIS). He wrote, “If you had purchased shares of DIS stock on Jan. 7, 2000 and never sold your shares, you are sitting on a share price gain of over 470%. That doesn’t include any dividend gains you may have reinvested over that time.”
\n
In the article, he highlights how Disney did not sit on its haunches and has transformed itself into one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.
\n
Although new GME management deserves credit for pivoting the company into a new direction, it will take time to alleviate the issues that ail the video game retailer and move forward with a coherent strategy. Reddit enthusiasm notwithstanding, a lot of work still needs to be done before GME stock is a viable investment again.
\n
My Final Word
\n
For a long time now, I have been advocating against loading up on GME stock because of the flawed fundamentals. But does that mean that another rally is not around the corner? However, retail investors have bid up the stock, and shares are more than double their May low of $136.50. Meanwhile, in the first two hours of June 8, the price has risen nearly 17% to a high of $344.66 and then dropped even lower than its starting price.\nMany investors are hoping that a digital transformation will help the company mount a much-needed turnaround — GameStop has a long-term vision of transforming from a brick-and-mortar retail company into a digital enterprise.\nHowever, this is easier said than done.\nAs I have mentionedin prior articles, GameStop was struggling long before the pandemic. The top line is consistently declining over the last five years as it tries to keep up withSony(NYSE:SONY),Microsoft(NASDAQ:MSFT), andAmazon(NASDAQ:AMZN), competitors who are increasingly relying on digital innovation for their future success. Not the case when it comes to GME.\nHence, even though the temptation to join in is there, I will still advise you to stay miles away from this one.\nFlawed Fundamentals\nThrough the end of 2020, GameStop’s sales reportedlydropped more than 30% per quarter, dropping in 10 out of 11 of its previous quarters. In the last decade, the video game retailer has had several years with negative revenue growth. If we take a look at the data from the last 12 quarters, GME has reported a “positive” surprisejust four times. GME had an operating income of $648 million in 2015. Last year, the company was sitting at a $238 million operating loss.\nIn many ways, GME reminds me ofDish Network’s(NASDAQ:DISH) Blockbuster. In five years, the company was bankrupt.\nUnderstandably, if GME wants to avoid this future, it must think outside of the box and focus on building its digital platform. The good thing is that when George E. Sherman took the helm as GameStop’s new CEO in April 2019, he had two things in mind: reducing costs on the brick-and-mortar business and expanding the digital platform.\nThe strategy is working. On Jan. 11, the video gamereportedworldwide sales results reflecting a 4.8% increase in comparable-store sales and a 309% increase in e-commerce sales.\nBut the company’s e-commerce setup still does not compare in any way to Amazon or Sony.\nBeginning of the End\nThe biggest question surrounding GME stock is whether it is best to count your blessings and exit. Shares are still up over 80% in a month, so Redditors still like this stock — GME andAMC(NYSE:AMC) have traded spots several times for the most popular choice among members of the platform.\nHowever, you have to ask yourself where GME stock will be in five years. Our very own Chris Markochwrote a great articleaboutDisney(NYSE:DIS). He wrote, “If you had purchased shares of DIS stock on Jan. 7, 2000 and never sold your shares, you are sitting on a share price gain of over 470%. That doesn’t include any dividend gains you may have reinvested over that time.”\nIn the article, he highlights how Disney did not sit on its haunches and has transformed itself into one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.\nAlthough new GME management deserves credit for pivoting the company into a new direction, it will take time to alleviate the issues that ail the video game retailer and move forward with a coherent strategy. Reddit enthusiasm notwithstanding, a lot of work still needs to be done before GME stock is a viable investment again.\nMy Final Word\nFor a long time now, I have been advocating against loading up on GME stock because of the flawed fundamentals. But does that mean that another rally is not around the corner? For sure, one cannot say that considering time and again, Redditors have shown their resilience when it comes to this company.\nIn many ways, GME stock has become iconic because of thesupport it has receivedfrom r/WallStreetBets. I do not expect that to change anytime soon. However, is this a stock that you can buy and keep for the next five years?
