Others on Wall Street, though, are more upbeat.
\n
General Electric (ticker:GE) is splitting into three businesses: aerospace, healthcare, and power generation. CEO Larry Culp believes more parts is the best way to generate shareholder value.
\n
Big breakups can be risky.DowDuPont shareholders holding shares of Dow (DOW),DuPont de Nemours (DD), and Corteva (CTVA) have lagged behind the market. But United Technology shareholders have beaten the market if they hung onto shares of Raytheon Technologies (RTX),Carrier Global (CARR), and Otis Worldwide (OTIS).
\n
The GE split is a part of the long turnaround being led by Culp. He took over in 2018 and has sold assets to pay down about $80 billion in debt.
\n
But Tusa isn’t giving Culp credit for the breakup plan. “The answer for this time is different is mostly around management,” Tusa wrote in a note Tuesday. “The plan today is far from original, essentially the same as former CEO Flannery had in store.”
\n
Culp took over for John Flannery, who succeeded Jeffery Immelt. GE has struggles since late in Immelt’s tenure. Stock in GE was north of $200 about a month before he left in mid-2017.
\n
Tusa also questions the $20-plus billion sale of GE biopharma to Danaher (DHR), which came early in Culp’s tenure. He thinks GE left tens of billions of dollars are the table. GE did need to raise cash, in part to fund insurance liabilities that stretched back years. It wasn’t a good time for the company.
\n
GE declined to comment on the analyst’s note.
\n
Tusa is about as bearish on GE as anyone on Wall Street. Tuesday’s note is one of several he has written panning the breakup. He rates share Neutral, which essentially means he believes they will keep up with the market, but his price target is a Street-low $55 a share.
\n
JPMorgan uses Underweight, Neutral, and Overweight ratings instead of Sell, Buy, and Hold. JPMorgan declined to comment on maintaining a Neutral rating with a target price far below where the stock trades.
\n
Others on Wall Street just don’t agree with Tusa. Bank of America analyst Andrew Obin wrote a research report Tuesday after an investor call he hosted for bank clients with GE management.
\n
“Our call focused on big picture changes at GE,” wrote Obin. He believes Culp is splitting up the company to bring operation focus to each business. “Investor feedback was broadly positive, but lacking conviction.”
\n
Investors might be nervous, but Obin remains bullish, rating shares Buy. His price target is $140. UBS analyst Markus Mittermaier is another GE bull. He rates share Buy and has a $143 price target.
\n
On Monday, Mittermaier wrote that the “triplet” companies will have a simpler capital structure going forward. Business simplification along with less debt are two reasons he remains bullish.
\n
Overall, 65% of analysts covering GE rate shares Buy. The average Buy-rating ratio for stocks in the S&P 500 is about 55%.
\n
GE stock seems to have most of the Street with it. Investors, like Obin points out, aren’t quite there yet. GE stock is down about 10% since announcing its breakup not quite a month ago. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are off about 1% and 4%, respectively, over the same span.
\n
The spins will take a while—not wrapping up until 2024. In early 2020, the companies said they are shelving the plans for a Lincoln-branded EV but would go ahead with an alternative vehicle based on Rivian technology.
\n
The Ford CEO suggested in the interview that the company is now increasingly confident in competing in the EV space by itself. Another handicap that forced the going-solo decision was the complexities involved in integrating the hardware and software together.
\n
Why It's Important:Rivian shares debuted on Wall Street on Nov. 10 following aninitial public offeringat a bumper valuation of over $100 billion. In early 2020, the companies said they are shelving the plans for a Lincoln-branded EV but would go ahead with an alternative vehicle based on Rivian technology.\nThe Ford CEO suggested in the interview that the company is now increasingly confident in competing in the EV space by itself. Another handicap that forced the going-solo decision was the complexities involved in integrating the hardware and software together.\nWhy It's Important:Rivian shares debuted on Wall Street on Nov. 10 following aninitial public offeringat a bumper valuation of over $100 billion. The company's strong debut and the subsequent run up in shares have raised eyebrows over its valuation which has taken it past the market capitalization of legacy U.S. automakers, including Ford.\nRivian's product pipeline consists of RIT, an EV pickup truck, which it began delivering to customers in September. Marijuana companies in the U.S. also struggle to obtain funding as many banks shun them out of fear of facing repercussions from the federal government.
\n
And despite there being optimism that legalization may be around the corner, that's by no means a guarantee as the industry might still have a long road ahead of it, especially in light of the recent actions made by top bank JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM).
\n
\n
Bank to restrict the trading of marijuana stocks that operate in the U.S.
\n
According to Reuters, JPMorgan \"has told prime brokerage clients it will no longer let them buy certain U.S. cannabis-related securities beginning Nov. 8.\" This relates to companies with a \"direct nexus to marijuana-related activities\" that do not trade on one of the main North American exchanges, such as the Nasdaq, NYSE, or the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). Those primarily affected by this decision are multi-state operators such as Curaleaf Holdings (OTC:CURLF) and Trulieve Cannabis (OTC:TCNNF), which because of the illegality of cannabis in the U.S., have to trade over the counter and on the Canadian Securities Exchange, which has laxer rules than the TSX.
\n
The bank will allow clients to liquidate their positions in such holdings, but they won't be allowed to make new purchases or take on new short positions in them. As a result, there could be lots of selling activity this week of those pot stocks from panicked investors. That doesn't mean it's impossible to buy the stocks as there are other brokerages out there, but this is yet another example of how investing in the U.S. cannabis industry continues to be a challenge.
\n
Why did JPMorgan do this?
\n
While nothing specific has changed in the marijuana industry to suggest these types of stocks have gotten riskier, the bank told its clients that it has a new \"framework that is designed to comply with U.S. money laundering laws and regulations by restricting certain activities.\"
\n
Banks that deal with marijuana companies have to fill out suspicious-activity reports on a recurring basis. And although it isn't impossible for a company to open a bank account or even obtain a loan, it's certainly not easy. A top bank like JPMorgan is going to be especially wary of being involved with the industry.
\n
Nonetheless, it's an interesting development considering that there appears to be hope for marijuana reform, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer pushing for marijuana legalization and President Joe Biden appearing to be in favor of decriminalizing the substance. It may not necessarily mean that the bank believes reform is a long shot. It could just be the bank's own risk management team that decided to take these additional precautionary measures to ensure they don't run afoul with the federal government.
\n
Should cannabis investors be worried?
\n
There's no doubt that this development could be concerning, as it has the potential to negatively impact liquidity in marijuana stocks. A reduction in liquidity can lead to volatile price movements, and thus, more risk in the short term.
\n
For long-term investors, however, this is just a bump in the road. With 36 states permitting medical marijuana and 18 of them having enacted legislation for adult-use pot, the writing is on the wall that legalization, or at least some kind of reform, will likely be coming soon. Fewer than 10% of Americans believe marijuana should remain illegal.
\n
This week (and possibly for the foreseeable future) there could be some adverse price movement for Curaleaf and other MSOs, but that shouldn't deter investors from owning these stocks. The top marijuana companies in the U.S. are building out their positions in the country (Curaleaf is in 23 states) and will be among the biggest winners once marijuana reform eventually takes place. With an annual revenue run rate of more than $1 billion, Curaleaf is already a top company in the industry. As marijuana laws loosen up, it could set up the business for even better results. Legalization, for example, would allow the company to ship its products across state lines and benefit from economies of scale.
\n
It'll require patience, but holding on to shares of U.S.-based marijuana stocks could lead to some significant returns over the long run.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
This Troubling News Could Send Pot Stocks Crashing This Week
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThis Troubling News Could Send Pot Stocks Crashing This Week\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-11-08 19:14 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
One of the reasons many U.S. marijuana stocks are undervalued right now is that they can't reach a broad pool of investors. It may not necessarily mean that the bank believes reform is a long shot. It could just be the bank's own risk management team that decided to take these additional precautionary measures to ensure they don't run afoul with the federal government.\nShould cannabis investors be worried?\nThere's no doubt that this development could be concerning, as it has the potential to negatively impact liquidity in marijuana stocks. A reduction in liquidity can lead to volatile price movements, and thus, more risk in the short term.\nFor long-term investors, however, this is just a bump in the road. With 36 states permitting medical marijuana and 18 of them having enacted legislation for adult-use pot, the writing is on the wall that legalization, or at least some kind of reform, will likely be coming soon. Fewer than 10% of Americans believe marijuana should remain illegal.\nThis week (and possibly for the foreseeable future) there could be some adverse price movement for Curaleaf and other MSOs, but that shouldn't deter investors from owning these stocks. Legalization, for example, would allow the company to ship its products across state lines and benefit from economies of scale.\nIt'll require patience, but holding on to shares of U.S.-based marijuana stocks could lead to some significant returns over the long run.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"CURLF":0.9,"TCNNF":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2558,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":845373362,"gmtCreate":1636293495570,"gmtModify":1636293495796,"author":{"id":"3579765510985887","authorId":"3579765510985887","name":"tinggie","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579765510985887","authorIdStr":"3579765510985887"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like pls","listText":"Like pls","text":"Like pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/845373362","repostId":"2181074782","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2669,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":846691590,"gmtCreate":1636076226174,"gmtModify":1636076226421,"author":{"id":"3579765510985887","authorId":"3579765510985887","name":"tinggie","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579765510985887","authorIdStr":"3579765510985887"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like pls","listText":"Like pls","text":"Like pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/846691590","repostId":"2181814713","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2181814713","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1636073640,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2181814713?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-11-05 08:54","market":"us","language":"en","title":"The Real Good Food Company Announces Pricing of Initial Public Offering","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2181814713","media":"StreetInsider","summary":"CHERRY HILL, N.J., Nov. 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Real Good Food Company, Inc.
