Much have been focused on the selling but Elon actually gain more shares after the whole thing. 

- exercising the expiring options at dirt cheap prices 

- paying the billion dollar taxes 

In conclusion, Elon increased his holding on the company. He could he made much more if not for the taxes.

    Musk is a great entrepreneur. Without his leadership, Tesla would not be today. Musk almost went bankrupt two years ago, but now he is the richest man in the world. He made Tesla, not Tesla made him. In this case, what's wrong with him choosing to pay taxes in cash? Perhaps his other new projects to transform the world need more money.

    Don't care if he buys stocks or not. A person who has no salary has to consider survival. Without Musk's contribution, where can Tesla be today?
