Can shares reclaim the milestone soon and head higher in 2022?

Recently, Apple stock flirted with $3 trillion in market cap, but quickly dipped below $2.9 trillion — as the broad market reacted to monetary tightening that should now happen more rapidly than previously expected.

Can shares of the Cupertino company finally find its way north in 2022 and meet the expectations of so many bulls on Wall Street? Or will bearishness take over during a year of rising interest rates and lingering inflation?

Figure 1: Apple Park in Cupertino, CA.

AAPL: the bull case

As Apple stock climbed viciously between late November and early December, many Wall Street experts piled on in support of “AAPL $3T”. Wedbush’s Dan Ives, for example, has been talking about the market cap milestone since our conversation in Q3 of last year, at least.

But other analysts have also hopped on the bullish bandwagon recently. Morgan Stanley upped its price target to $200 per share in November, while the JPMorgan research team saw Apple stock heading to $3.5 trillion in market cap over the next 12 months.

One of the most vocal optimists came from the buy side. Loup’s Gene Munster thought that his previous price target had quickly become stale, and that $250 per share now seemed more reasonable. In his opinion, the multi-year opportunity in the metaverse will gain investor appreciation in the new year, which should reignite momentum that the stock had lost in the last few weeks of 2021.

AAPL: the bear case

Despite the upbeat expectations described above, mostly supported by company-specific factors, the market rolled into 2022 with its guard up. The boogieman of the moment seems to be the Federal Reserve’s anticipated reaction to near-full employment and sticky inflation, which should lead to higher interest rates in the next several months.

I have recently explained how tighter money supply can spell trouble for stocks that trade for relatively high multiples. While AAPL is no Tesla or Rivian, the stock’s forward P/E of nearly 30 times and only modest earnings growth expectations could be a drag for share price in 2022, as investors look for better deals in value and cyclical stocks.

The Apple Maven’s take

I continue to think that Apple is a great stock to buy and hold for the long term. Under the leadership of a CEO (and former COO) that is driven by operational excellence, the company seems to be in very good hands. Better yet, demand for Apple’s products and services, as well as consumer appreciation for the brand, seem to be at or near an all-time high.

That said, the setup for the first few weeks or months of 2022 looks challenging to me. Apple stock climbed relentlessly in 2020, and then again last year. Aided by a spike in pandemic-driven demand for tech devices and lavish liquidity in the system, AAPL recorded one of its best three years of returns ever between 2019 and 2021.

As much as the metaverse and autonomous vehicles can and likely will support the company’s financial results over the next many years, I think that AAPL stock is overdue for a breather. While shares will likely climb back above $3 trillion and head much higher from there eventually, I am not so confident that this rally will happen in the immediate future.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can Apple Stock Reclaim $3 Trillion And Thrive In 2022?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCan Apple Stock Reclaim $3 Trillion And Thrive In 2022?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-09 12:31 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
A market cap of $3 trillion has, so far, proven to be a ceiling that Apple stock does not seem ready to break through yet. American depositary shares of Chinese EV maker Nio(NYSE:NIO)hit their lowest level in over a year, the shares are jumping today. And the stocks of EV-charging network company EVgo(NASDAQ:EVGO)and vehicle electrification company XL Fleet(NYSE:XL)are also on the rise. The stocks had moved as follows as today:

Nio shares up 14.76%

EVgo shares up 9.08%

XL Fleet shares up 7.9%

So what

The thing is, these stocks have very little in common, other than the glaring fact that they all are in the electric vehicle sector. And that tells the story of today's big moves. Though these businesses have not exactly been moving in the same direction, the stock prices have. They are all down significantly in 2021. XL Fleet shares have dropped 59% year to date, while EVgo and Nio stocks are down 37% and 35%, respectively. But the businesses aren't quite as synchronized. Nio's sales are growing quickly, and it announced some exciting plans for next year, including the introduction of its latest EV that it hopes will challenge the Tesla Model 3.

Nio told investors it expects to begin deliveries of the new ET5 in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Now what

Nio is clearly the largest of these stocks, and likely the closest to profitability. With today's move, Nio has a market capitalization of about $52 billion. Compare that to EVgo's valuation of $2.7 billion and XL Fleet at just over $500 million. There's a good reason for that, too.

In addition to Nio's new ET5 coming late next year, it will begin selling its new, larger luxury sedan in March 2022. And beyond the ET5 and larger ET7, Nio has said it plans a third new offering next year. That may come from a collaboration with the largest automotive company in China, but it has yet to be officially announced.

Nio is also continuing to move outside of China as it expands the growth it began in Europe in 2021. EVgo and XL Fleet also have plans to grow, but the results are coming much slower than with Nio. XL Fleet, for example, saw its third-quarter revenue nearly cut in half compared to the third quarter of 2020. XL Fleet converts internal combustion-powered vehicles to plug-in hybrid electric power. It also plans to have a fully electrical conversion solution soon. But as auto manufacturers have struggled to keep up with demand amid supply chain constraints this year, the company hasn't been able to drive the growth it had hoped for.

However, XL Fleet recently announced it has grown its relationship with utility-scale wind and solar power facilities operators for charging infrastructure to support the fleet vehicles it has already provided. It is also in a pilot program with the Department of Defense that it hopes could grow into a large opportunity.

So while Nio and EVgo are growing as EV demand and adoption grows, XL Fleet is struggling at this point. That partially explains the vast disparity in the valuations assigned by investors. But for today, they are all being lumped in the same boat as investors are pushing EV sector names higher moving into the final trading day of the year.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Nio, EVgo, and XL Fleet Stocks Jumped Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Nio, EVgo, and XL Fleet Stocks Jumped Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-31 10:07 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedOne day after the American depositary shares of Chinese EV maker Nio(NYSE:NIO)hit their lowest level in over a year, the shares are jumping today. Still, he said Omicron arguably is going to be a headwind for at least the next month.Meanwhile, the S&P 1500 airlines index dipped. Delta Air Lines and Alaska Air Group canceled hundreds of flights again on Tuesday as the daily tally of infections in the United States surged.Three of the 11 major S&P sector indexes declined, the energy index, the consumer services sector .SPLRCL and the financial sector are in the red.Typically, the final five trading days of the year and the first two of the subsequent year are seasonally strong for U.S. stocks, known as the \"Santa Claus Rally.\" However, market participants warned against reading too much into daily moves as the holiday season tends to record some of the lowest volume turnovers that can cause exaggerated price action.The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 90.42 points, or 0.25%, to 36,488.63, the S&P 500 gained 6.71 points, or 0.14%, to 4,793.06 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 15.51 points, or 0.1%, to 15,766.22.The S&P 500 dipped on Tuesday in the lowest trading volume session of 2021, snapping a four-day winning streak.As 2021 draws to a close, the main U.S. stock indexes are on pace for their third straight year of stunning annual returns, boosted by historic fiscal and monetary stimulus. The S&P 500 is looking at its strongest three-year performance since 1999.The focus next year will shift to the U.S. Federal Reserve's path of interest rate hikes amid a surge in prices caused by supply chain bottlenecks and a strong economic rebound.Among other stocks, shares of Victoria’s Secret & Co rose more than 12% after the intimate apparel retailer announced a $250 million accelerated share repurchase program. The retailer also said they had strong sales over the holidays.Tesla's CEO Elon Musk exercised all of his options expiring next year, signaling an end to his stock sales. Its shares dropped 0.21% but were still on course to end about 54% for the year.Volume on U.S. exchanges was 7.89 billion shares, compared with the 11.15 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.20-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.43-to-1 ratio favored decliners.The S&P 500 posted 76 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 77 new highs and 374 new lows.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"161125":0.6,"513500":0.6,"ESmain":0.6,"IVV":0.6,"OEF":0.6,"OEX":0.6,"SDS":0.6,"SH":0.6,"SPXU":0.6,"SPY":0.64,"SSO":0.6,"UPRO":0.6}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2797,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":696512254,"gmtCreate":1640734489282,"gmtModify":1640734489651,"author":{"id":"3575367401875717","authorId":"3575367401875717","name":"JasonBarry","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3f66aec8cff071dcd3a0116c9d93d9b7","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575367401875717","authorIdStr":"3575367401875717"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please 🙏 like TQ all bosses","listText":"Please 🙏 like TQ all bosses","text":"Please 🙏 like TQ all bosses","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/696512254","repostId":"1161513507","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2523,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0}],"defaultTab":"posts","isTTM":false}
